The Emulate this sound Thread

I see these pop up quite often, and I know some people get tired of see'ing them, so I figured we could turn it into one big thread and even perhaps sticky it at the top. I of course made the post for personal reasons :P - I've got a sound I just can't seem to figure out. I'm really not even close and I feel fairly dumb because it sounds easy to replicate, but I'm struggling.

It's the first sound you hear in the track. Lots of reverb and some delay, but can't get the tuning down.

MIDI would be useful if you have it figured out already. Will make it easier to work on the sound itself. Either way I'll give it a go.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-02-2009 18:32:

Also, what VSTs do you use?

Posted by Waza on Sep-02-2009 18:45:

yes good idea but say what vst you have and even midi file if you have it and it will make it easier for people.

Here is a first try at the basic sound:

Any suggestions for improving it?

Sounds good. Perhaps a bit of EQ removing some low end and some extra release??

Second pass, I think your suggestions helped:

I love engineering sounds. I need a production partner who is better than I am at melodies. He can come up with most of the notes and I can program most of the synths and effects.

I love arranging and generally building a track, lets get a melodic genius on board and we've got ourselves a Tranceaddict Trio .

Now that's a name that would sell records.

To be honest, i love writing melodies. Guess we're complete

Thanks. I wonder what synth they actually used in that track.

Nice one, Jive. Can't really get much closer than that.

I've got a new one. Two actually....and they're both in the same song.

Gui Boratto - No Turning Back (Original Mix)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe18N8U87YU

First sound comes in @ 2:33 - Just a very basic melody.

The second is the vocal that comes in at 3 minutes. Was wondering how to create a hollow, yet extremely stereo fieldish vocal that sits at the front of a mix. It's hard to tell how pristine the vocal is from youtube, but it gives a fair idea.

ps. Awesome track even though played to death

I'm not hearing anything unusual other than standard compression, reverb and delay. I think the timbre of her voice has more to do with it than anything else. Sometimes the use of doubler plugins can have an effect.

Great track, tho. Somehow I missed that one.

Here is a high quality clip. That youtube just doesn't do it justice. It's way more complex than that. There is something that is hollowing out her lower frequencies and it's not just EQ.

Talking about that guitar-like thing?

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Nov-05-2009 17:32:

Also, that vocal does not seem all that "stereo" to me, it sounds panned slightly to the right, with some delay on it. The "hollowness" is probably down to EQing and maybe an effect. It sounds slightly noisy and "thin" to me, almost like it was captured with a tape recorder or something and then placed in the track. Does sound interesting.

OK, I hear it now. Umm, it may be a combination of as few things. There is definitely some low and hi cuts along with maybe some mid boost. There may be some bit crushing going on because her voice sounds really lo-fi. There may also be a bit of distortion of overdrive on her voice. Really, it sounds like she is singing through a tape recorder, which is very cool.
