The Russian team is going to be pure beast-mode in 2010. Canada's gonna need to bust a few ankles to get past that thing.

I don't like your picks for Canada, especially since I know you just copy and pasted them from proicehockey.com. They clearly just listed who they think the most skilled players are, without any regard to the roles that will have to be filled for the team to be succesful. Guys like Jordan Staal and Dan Cleary are dark horses that could be integral parts to Canada's success. Lecavalier and Heatley should both be left off the list for a good 2 week vacation.

Anyway the goalie trio should include Cam Ward, he's the most consistent goalie at the training camp, even if the team in front of him weaken his numbers. It's not often you see a softie float by this guy. Brodeur and Luongo, on the other hand, can carry a team to a win, but often let a poor goal slide past, and that can't happen in an Olympic tournament.

Goalies:

Brodeur
Ward
Fleury

Defence:

Pronger
Niedermayer
Beauchemin
Phaneuf
Keith
Seabrook

Forwards:

Crosby
Nash
Cleary

Iginla
Carter
Getzlaf

Eric Staal
Jordan Staal
Richards

Sharp
Toews
Doan

Is something closer to what I'd like to see.

Canada wont win.

Russia all the way!

Posted by Quethas on Sep-08-2009 05:39:

Canada and Russia are clear favorites, but I think that Sweden, Finland and USA also has chances to win this one. Though maybe with the case of Finland, we maybe should already say GO FOR THE SILVER...

Finland will probably look something like this:

Goalies:
Niklas Bckstrm, Minnesota Wild
Miikka Kiprusoff, Calgary Flames
Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators

Defenders:
Lasse Kukkonen, Avangard Omsk
Sami Lepist, Phoenix Coyotes
Toni Lydman, Buffalo Sabres
Joni Pitknen, Carolina Hurricanes
Sami Salo, Vancouver Canucks
Kimmo Timonen, Philadelphia Flyers
Ossi Vnnen, Dinamo Minsk

Forwards:
Valtteri Filppula, Detroit Red Wings
Niklas Hagman, Toronto Maple Leafs
Jussi Jokinen, Carolina Hurricanes
Olli Jokinen, Calgary Flames
Mikko Koivu, Minnesota Wild
Saku Koivu, Anaheim Ducks
Jere Lehtinen, Dallas Stars
Ville Leino, Detroit Red Wings
Antti Miettinen, Minnesota Wild
Petteri Nokelainen, Anaheim Ducks
Jarkko Ruutu, Ottawa Senators
Tuomo Ruutu, Carolina Hurricanes
Teemu Selnne, Anaheim Ducks

Evgeny Grachev is trying to earn himself a spot on the Russian roster.

Lasse Kukkonen, Avangard Omsk
Sami Lepist, Phoenix Coyotes

canada could probably put 3 different teams in and have a chance at sweeping the medals

i'm not saying that we will win, but after the shitstacle of turin and playing on home ice there is no way you can't call them favourites.

Posted by bamski on Sep-09-2009 16:10:

As amazing as Russia's been, I just can't see Canada lose, not given the circumstances.

Sure Canada will come in the favorites, and they definitely have as good a chance as Russia to win, however, I think Russia will win regardless.

As much as Canada wants to win on home ice, Russia is coming in there to spoil their party and want to show that Russian hockey is better/stronger then Canadian hockey.

On top of that, the Russian team plays together ALOT more then the Canadian team. The Russian team already has a sick chemistry.

Ya, and the two best players in the league.

I don't even care that your 3rd and 4th lines are teh sux. When Ovechkin and Malkin are each scoring a pair every game, and Semin's skatin around deking our entire defense, I'ma be bitching like a madman at home watching Canada lose their game against Russia.

Posted by Vlad on Sep-11-2009 22:25:

The third line isnt that bad either... federov, kovalev and either morozov or radulov.

I think morozov will actually be on the second line because he is the #1 superstar of the russian super league.

And as much as Yashin has done for russian hockey, I think he should seriously step down and let someone younger and more productive take his spot.

Posted by xtr3m on Sep-11-2009 22:55:

Russians will have the most dynamic top line, that's for sure. What they won't have, at least as much, is young, physical players on the blue line and overall depth. I also feel that Canadians finally did their coaching staff selection right.

The last two IIHF world championships were won by Russia, however the Olympics is a different animal.

The Russian Defense corps is a sexy monster too. And with Ovechkin skating around shoulder-first into every Canadian he can see, they won't need to be physical either

Thats exactly why the Russians have the edge, they play together more often and have developed a good chemistry.

The Russians can be physical if they want to.

Not really Olympics talk.

Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger
Dan Boyle, Mike Green
Jay Bouwmeester, Shea Weber

vs

Andrei Markov, Sergei Gonchar
Anton Volchenkov, Sergei Zubov
Fedor Tyutin, Denis Grebeshkov

The difference is substantial. Age, size, offensive potential. That is, of course, if both Gonchar and Zubov can recover from their injuries/surgeries well enough.

Mike Green will not be making the Olympic team, he is a HUGE defensive liability.
