It is a common identifier for intro freshman level courses at many universities.

This. Apparently OP has never attended college. The numbers go all the way up, sometimes to 700 or 800 level classes.

My uni is messed up and intro classes are 201, and every subsequent class in the program is either 300 or 400.

Well what is the system in other Universities? Forgive me for not knowing, I've never actually traveled outside the North Americas.

It is really just a colloquialism. None of the schools I've attended have used that specific numbering system.

numbering systems can vary somewhat
math 101 in my school is a crazy math class about analysis on manifolds

Posted by Ania_xox on Sep-08-2009 21:15:

it means "for beginners"

your example would mean "Dubstep for Beginners"

like a basic first-time level of learning

It is a category for college classes in the US but it has become more of an expression to indicate a new activity for someone.
