Conspiracy Theorists

What can you do to help them "see" the light? lol

Posted by Slylee on Sep-08-2009 16:20:

that's the same question they ask themselves about you lol

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Sep-08-2009 16:22:

Wresting an earnest belief from somebody is likely an exercise in futility. Besides, why would you want to change the minds of people who intentionally gulp up any information they come across that confirms their half-baked ideas about the world? Let em be dumb I say, just make sure you profit off of them.

Posted by Lira on Sep-08-2009 16:22:

That's analogous to asking "How can I convert someone to another religion?".

This is basically what I was figuring, but I wondered if anyone had any ideas that could help sway someone.

Basically the situation is this friend of my aunt's, claimed some NWO bullshit and I called him out on it. He then says that he is an independent thinker and all this. I tell him if he was an independent thinker, he would not believe that the NWO is true.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Sep-08-2009 16:46:

Personally, I think he has the right idea, he's just going about it wrong. He needn't subscribe to batshit theories merely to be critical of all authority - if anything, he has just been swallowed by the little subculture of like-minded people. It's something that each and every one of us does. Take Tranceaddict for example.

Just what do you want to "sway" him to, though? Every side of an argument has an agenda, and there will probably always, always be supporters of theories that are sound or otherwise. Essentially, your only course is to throw what you think to be supportable logic at him and hope that he listens. He won't, but that's the headstrong idiocy of argument for you.

Nobody is an independent thinker. If he believes this, it's because he subscribes to notions because they are of some personal value to him - which is exactly why you will never "win" him over.

Posted by Demoted on Sep-08-2009 16:48:

Sounds like you sure faced him.

Yeah good points. He already gave up though, so the discussion between him is over. lol

Normally we do that with a sword.

I thought I felt the earth shifting back on its axis.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Sep-08-2009 16:58:

Axis? Are you implying that the Earth is round, Sir? I'll not have this vile and frankly regressive banter up in my TA. The Earth is clearly flat, use your goddamned eyes you sheep.

Some people are idiots. Live with it, there's nothing you can do.

Actually I'm wrong. Most people are idiots.

Here's a very famous Conspiracy Theorist interviewing a very important man.

Posted by iTranscendence on Sep-08-2009 19:19:

The best thing you can do if you disagree with him, is find common ground on the subject. Usually when there are deep divisions on a subject the truth lies somewhere in the middle. If it was 9/11 related and you agree that there should be a new investigation, then you don't need to go any farther than that. That's all the victims families and the 9/11 activists want.

Also,
inb4 dumb and dumber try and bum rush me.

I'd have inquired if his thinking was independent from the facts

wrong.. because there is no right religion. and there is a difference between myth and truth.

analogous would have to mean something similar.

I would disagree because many people believe that their religion is the only right religion.

Many people are wrong and there is a difference between faith and fact.

Usually conspiracy theorists have some sort of factual evidence, where religious people simply have blind faith.

Agreed, but these people aren't logical. Nor are they easily reasoned with.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-08-2009 20:54:

I don't think there's really a conspiracy theorist mindset, just a lot of stupidity directed at a certain subject. Some conspiracy theories are probably true. Some are quite convincing despite being unproven. Others are, however, obviously ludicrous.

The difference between a heathily cynical person and a conspiracy theorist is merely that the latter lack the logic and intelligence to tell the likely from the ludicrous.

Xtians regard the bible as evidence.

To a religious person, there is a true religion, the rest being just myths and/or variations on her truth. To a Conspiracy Theorist, she's got the truth, and all other ideas are just myths.

You cannot analyse both sentences Karimically, but as the preacher regarding what he's preaching - that's what we're talking about
