Mayor Miller is at it again!
I wonder how long until this becomes law in the form of bans and regulations? Im sure BBQ is a big no no too in this man's world.

| Mayor pushes out lawnmowers and pollution Posted: September 09, 2009, 3:19 PM by Allison Hanes environment, Mayor David Miller Mayor David Miller today made a push to gradually rid Toronto of polluting chainsaws, leaf blowers and lawn mowers. He announced the city will begin retiring its own environmentally polluting equipment used to cut grass and trim hedges in city parks. At the same time he launched a program called Cut It Out to encourage residents to get rid of their own gas-guzzling machines this fall, offering incentives like $10 Home Depot gift certificates and chances to win prizes. What we hear again and again from the people of Toronto is they just want to know how and the gift card and the fact their old equipment is going to be recycled and reused responsibly and disposed of responsibly will reach Torontonians, Mr. Miller said, after operating a manual push mower on a strip of sod outside City Hall today. Will everybody change? Perhaps not this year. But the city is showing leadership and there are lots of alternatives. Old generation two stroke engines, like those in lawn mowers and leaf blowers, create that same amount of smog in a one-hour period as 40 cars or one car traveling between Toronto and Montreal. By replacing its own equipment, the city estimates it will reduce smog-forming emissions by 49,500 tonnes and greenhouse gases by 133,600 kilograms. Residents looking to get rid of their old machinery can bring them to the local community environment days which will be held at different dates across the city, between Sept. 12 and Oct. 24, said Fatima Dharsee, executive director of the Clean Air Foundation. The first takers will get a gift card and a chance to win a new cordless electric mower. The old equipment will be disposed of free of charge. The Mayor said in his neighbourhood near High Park many people are replacing lawns with flower beds and gardens that dont require power equipment to maintain. He said at his home he uses an electric mower. "The hope we have is tremendous because Torontonians have already proven themselves to be environmentalists, Mr. Miller said. |
IMO Toronto does NOT i repeat.. DOES NOT have a pollution problem. We get a few "smog days" per year and even at that its not nearly as bad as most of the world's cities.
I credit advanced technology in pollution scrubbers, better auto emissions and the fact that half our manufacturing has moved to china LOL.
But seriously, maybe we should all just sit at home and stop breathing in order to save the environment.

this thread should be renamed to "Jayx1 is at it again!"
/thread
lets hope im wrong. But history has proven itself. Lets get rid of miller before he causes more damage to the city
oh, i know, let's ban Jayx1 next!
No one is asking anyone to click on my threads
yeah but is it too much to ask you to just deal with the facts and leave out your romanticizing about saving torontonians from the brink of death at the hands of the commie mayor?
I'm all for cutting emissions but I'd rather see initiatives to move towards solar energy and the likes.

Someone should just make catalytic converters for small engines... problem solved.
so let me get this right...
he is now complaining about things that have not been banned, have not been proposed to be banned, are not the subject of any legislation whatsoever, and which don't compel anyone to do anything that they don't want to do.
in fact, the gov't is doing EXACTLY what he says in another thread(without evidence as to why) it ought to be doing, which is limiting itself to educating the public and letting people decide for themselves what they want to do.
so he gets what he wants...but still finds a reason to bitch!
Jay, why not start a blog? put the link in your sig here and then stop cluttering up TA with these silly threads.
ive seen what this mayor can do. And hes suggested laws banning 2 stroke engines in the past.
Sorry but i dont trust this guy
I thought it was obvious a long time ago jayx1 uses this forum to try and multiply his vote
I don't really get what you are bitching about.
So, Mayor starts a program to try and encourage people to go with more 'green' alternatives and educate the public, and does it without a ban / by-law to enforce it - and you still find a reason to bitch?
And, because in your opinion Toronto does not have a "pollution problem", we shouldn't be trying to do better?
Using the logic of "Well, there are other Cities that are worse than us and have more smog days..." seems like shaky logic at best to argue that we don't have a pollution problem.
Jay: Stick to the serious issues, complaining about yawners like this one just breeds apathy. This is stupid and a waste of taxpayer money, but other than that it's not really harmful. Move along, nothing to see here.
Miller/Vaughan/Moscoe ballwashers (you know who you are): If you don't have anything intelligent to say in response, then consider putting a sock in it. A 90% useless thread doesn't warrant a 100% useless and content-free response. All you accomplish is to make yourselves look ignorant while bringing more attention to non-issues that would otherwise have just been ignored.
I don't really know if I agree or disagree with a ban... But two-strokes ARE brutal.
And I don't mind your threads, I don't get any political insight anywhere else lol... Not that I really ever seek it.
Double-post.
Stupid iPod

Jay, you haven't used the term "limousine socialist" in this threat yet man... you feeling alright?
Threat? What threat?
As for this "non" subject. It may not be much of an issue for some people. But I feel that pointing out every little step that is being taken to remove our freedoms is an important means to understand the greater scope of what is happening. The little things are what impacts us the most. Whether its lawn mower bans, smoking bans, plastic bottle bans, you name it. Yes alone it may be insignificant or a slight nuisance, but its the prevailing attitude that will eventually come back around to bite us all in the ass if it hasnt already.
As for Miller, he has already stated in the past that he would like to see a ban and IMO he is testing the waters with this program.
BTW an education program is information based in fact which is partially what happens here. But the government is going one step further already by using tax money to pay for "Incentives" and by ditching perfectly good gas powered equipment and buying new ones at taxpayers expense. Thats when education becomes policy and eventually law.
PS: I will post my opinions and it's up to those on the board to decide whether they wish to read them, "useless" or not
