Synthesizing your own percussion: tips, samples, etc.

Some heated discussion in another thread got me thinking about this.

How many of you guys synthesize your own percussion samples? I have to admit that while I've tried, I've been unable to get anything usable apart from a few basic "siney" kick samples. I've tried doing hi hats with white noise and stuff, but can never really get anything decent. Anyone have any tips or experiences on synthesizing percussion other than kicks? Any samples of what you have made?

[And "just use samples" does not count as a tip.]

i better idea will be to set the task of writing your own drum loop and comparing it to a vengence one

First I need to be able to make each individual part of the loop. The only drum sounds I can make from scratch right now are simple kicks.

I try to "get the best out of what I own," but I have tried and failed again and again to get decent percussion sounds other than kicks out synthesizers, both subtractive and FM. This thread will be a record of my struggle to get decent percussion out of synths. Here is a hi hat attempt in FM7:

so what more do you want from the sample you have just created?

when you start making the high hat what shape have you selected?

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-11-2009 19:41:

That one sounds usable to me, actually. I seem to be having better luck with hi hats this time around. Just a matter of more experience, maybe?

Still have no clue how to tackle snares, though.

Sine. I'm using FM, so you can basically turn a sine into anything you want...

I would highly recommend microTonic
http://www.soniccharge.com/mtonic

Great drum synth that features two osc's (a wave generator and a noise generator) and distortion.

Speaking of which, distortion is the key to transforming your sine wave into a satisfactory drum sound. The wave defines the basic shape of the sound while distortion adds the color and timbre to the sample.

edit: however, creating a fat kick is a whole other beast. I'm still working on that one.

Buy a 909 fags or use samples

well i haven't used fm8 yet but select a saw first with a hi hat pattern on a loop then select square with the second osc or sound shaping device then triangle. select lp on a filter you may have and remove any effects to and use the envolope to any res and start by opening release and use sustain to about half way and post up what you have done

You don't have a point to make.

Whenever I try to make a crash cymbal with FM, I end up with some monstrosity like this:

Posted by Zild on Sep-11-2009 20:48:

What you should do is develop your own mold for the crash cymbal and your own alloy and make a few of them then make your own condenser microphone and of course your own patch cables to record a few crashes

Not the most realistic sounding crash I've ever heard, but it sounds kinda cool. I'd like to hear it reversed!

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-11-2009 21:13:

It does sound neat, just not much like a crash. It would be good if I were trying to make sounds for harsh techno or industrial or something.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-11-2009 21:16:

Now this is more like it (for hi hats):

Getting a bit better. I linked velocity to some of the operators so it changes the character of the sound.

I am building up quite a collection of hats here.

Will upload a zip file with a bunch later if anyone is interested...

There are some on youtube by airwave.

I don't really know anything about FM synthesis but I have a Korg electribe (er-1) that basically functions as a percussion based analog synth. I can't see much practical application for these kinds of sounds outside of glitchy minimal techno. I just use it for the high-hat, which is a sample.

Anyway I'm guessing the electribe has a much better interface for this kind of thing. You can probably pick one up really cheap.
