ha, i'm exactly the same!

it's so fucking irritating, especially since it always happens when you're in the serious stages of a track

well make sure you've got your i/o buffer set to 1024. If you still have problems try using the lighter effects. "Space Designer" is what's killing my processor.

i use camelspace and camelphat really heavily, as well as the psp vintage warmer.. i think that's what's making mine struggle..

Plus 1. I feel you 100%.

Things that help:
1 More RAM.
2 Keeping the internal harddrive of the G5 no more than 75% full.
3 Freezing tracks.

Selling that dual G5 and moving to a mac pro would be good if only I had about $3500.
Not right now.

Bounce to audio?

I never thought I would see the all powerful Mac struggling along...

once the 30th channel is reached, fx maxed... even the best would struggle..

and bouncing is a solution, but i cbf

It takes like 10 seconds. Don't be lazy.

it's so permanent once bounced tho.. i make changes every time i open a project pretty much.. once i've bounced it i'd probably just get sick of it

I'll have you know that I'm running Logic 8 on a dual 1.0 ghz PowerPC G4 with 1 gig of Ram. This comp was new in 2000. I'm amazed at how well it does actually. I feel like a crybaby for posting this thread now that I put things into perspective.

You don't have to delete the source material... just turn off the instrument/FX once it's bounced (you CAN do that in Logic, can't you?).

If you make a habit of doing that and keep CPU/memory usage low, then you should be able to reactivate at least a few instruments at a time without running into any resource issues.

Plus, a little permanency is probably a good thing, forces you to stop fiddling with minor details and just get things done.

freezing is good thinking anyway. u can use the parts in other songs, daws, etc later. wavs are forever, software is not.

Logic does this automatically once a track is frozen.

Don't feel too bad. I'm using Cubase 5 on a PC and constantly get a smiliar error to yours, "CPU Overload." Never had these problems on the same hardware with previous versions of Cubase. Very frustrating.

Posted by meriter on Sep-14-2009 03:18:

What do you guys mean by "freezing" tracks?

Posted by sixofour.604 on Sep-14-2009 04:07:

In Cubase you click a freeze track button, and the whole channel [say, your bass] is turned into a big as wav file and that is played instead of the FX and Synth..it saves cpu. I guess logic has this ability aswell.

In Logic, you have to change a setting to get the button to show up.

1. Right-click any track in the Arrange window and choose Configure Track Header

2. A dialogue will appear, place a check next to the Freeze option. It is a green square with an asterisk (*) in it.

3. Press close and you'll see the freeze button appear on each track.

When you freeze track(s) in Logic, you press the button to choose which tracks to freeze. Then you have to hit Play to begin the freeze process. Once a track is frozen, the only settings that can be changed are Volume, Mute, Solo, and Routing.
