What do you do?

Hello everyone, this is my first post on here but I've been lurking and reading your threads for a while now. I have a simple question though. Is your love for EDM shunned or do the people you are around like it as much as you do? I find it hard to meet people in Texas who love, or even like this great style of music as much as I do. I mean, there is the occasional fanboy who thinks Tiesto's ISOS series are all Tiesto songs, or the girl who listens to the mainstream crap like Cascada, or the guy who thinks Basshunter is quality Trance. So, what do you do when you feel like the only one in the state who has a love for this music?

You've gotta be nearing the age you move away from the rents and go to college. Its much easier to find like-minded people at college and over the years you tend to surround yourself with those people. Give it time and once you can legally drink (dono if you can) go to clubs where good DJs play, since the people there will obviously also dig the music.

Ghost Smilie

Wow, you're good I just turned 20 a few weeks ago, and I'm on my 2nd year of College. How'd you figure that out?

And I've been trying to introduce this music to many people that I've met, from Trance to Progressive House, but no one seems to get into it or enjoy it at all. Kids my age need to put down the Kanye West and Metallica and see what they're missing!

I grew up in Texas, and personally I never found very many people who were into electronic music, apart from a few good friends I made in high school. In college most people I met seemed to be into either indie rock or just mainstream radio stuff.

Is there a scene in Texas at all?

Dubstep is doing well over there, it seems.

EDM is widely accepted in most parts of the world now. It's not an issue.

You have got to be kidding me.

Yea that made more sense

Only people listening to Guetta and other shitty "house" music.

Posted by ziptnf on Sep-15-2009 14:39:

I'll be honest, I have no idea what most of my friends listen to. My buddies listen to rap, I have a friend who listens to practically nothing but country, and my girlfriend listens to some indie bands and other progressive rock/alternative stuff. I only know 3 other people who listen to EDM exclusively, but they listen to electro, dubstep, and hard trance. I know of nobody who listens to psytrance except me

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-15-2009 14:43:

I don't have any friends who listen to more than a smattering of electronic music, but I don't care very much because I can go to a club and listen to it with like-minded people anyway.

Posted by Luv4themusic on Sep-15-2009 14:45:

The scene here isn't as big as I'd like it to be. I mean sure, there are a few people who listen to Trance/House, etc. but when I talk to them they say they have to be in the "mood" to listen to it. On the other hand, I listen to it everyday, in my car, ipod, room. It seems like EDM is only listened to when they are on some sort of drug, and I've heard from a few that that's the only way they can listen to this style of music.

And for finding people who enjoy it in college, I'm having no luck. All my friends listen to what's on the radio. They know nothing besides what's being played on the latest rap/rock stations..

Posted by trancechan on Sep-15-2009 14:48:

i listen to what to i like. if someone asks, i reply trance. usually they get a funny look on their face - fuck them for not knowing. if they ask more, cool. if not, they can stick to radio crap.

your best bet is to start going out and asking a lot of questions. thursday night house at the boom-boom room or whatever is better than nothing, i suppose. then again, i kind of hate clubbing anyways.

i rarely see psytrance outside of a rave/festival environment, & that's with me living in the supposed entertainment capital of the world.

Duh. Lol, it's such a weird style of music that nobody will understand it. Anyone who isn't used to EDM would just hear boom dada boom dada boom and some weird noises and be all like "uhhh wtf". I listen to it quite regularly, and while some of my friends listen to my sets, I doubt they really "get" it.

Austin, Dallas, and Houston bring big names with some regularity. In the late '90s to early '00s the Dallas clubs seemed to be big on d'n'b and hardstyle, but I haven't been to them in a long time apart from seeing a friend DJ once in a while so I don't really know what's going on today, but I think psy might have a decent-sized following now, and I have heard dubstep in clubs a few times recently. Pretty sure all of our musical trends and styles are entirely imported, Texan clubbers just latch onto whatever is hot elsewhere, especially if it is really fast and frantic or "hard."

the rave scene in the usa (and by that i mean rampant use of exstacy) started in dallas. From my time in d town, they do get some guys, but it is not really big compared to other places.

Go to parties where they play your kind of music and meet people there.

Recommendations of places to go:

Rich's - Houston
House of Blues - Dallas
House of Blues - Houston
Bar Rio - Houston
Lizard Lounge - Dallas (Armin/Glen Morrison will be there next month)
Stubb's BBQ - Austin
Palladium Ballroom - Dallas (Tiesto event coming up)

everybody I know calls it techno. And when I said Daft Punk was electro house they said "well that's just a sub-genre of techno". So the scene around here is... well you can't really call it a scene. There's a non-alcoholic club called Zero Gravity that a lot of kids go to but I think it's just modern club music, nothing special.

Zero Gravity is awesome if you are a pedophile but otherwise the music is shitty (at least that's what I remember). My advice for you if you are under 21 is either try to get out to college house/loft parties in Chicago because everything else is 21+ Unless you want to spend $$$ on shows like Tiesto or Chromeo/Crystal Castles. Sasha/Cattaneo might be 18+ as well. 'One Night Stand' at the Metro is fun too.

Well me and some buddies who I'm trying to introduce them to the scene are going to the Armin show here soon. I'm hoping to meet some people there since it's my first time at a club

Posted by daphunky1 on Sep-16-2009 06:44:

Well if you already have friends who are going to see armin then that's a start it, could be worse.
I must say it's weird the way you say something like "armin show". In all my going out and seeing djs, I've never been to a "show" or something that would be considered the event by one name alone. Not saying I'm all underground or something, just meaning that my scenes have always been smaller/more lowkey.

How drab and lazy of them. I'm busy too but music is something I'm willing to take the time to find.

For a guaranteed good time feed them psychedelics although you can find better than Armin
