Keyboard

I have been noticing as of late, a few people I know that aren't from the US use the ` as opposed to the ' in contractions. It doesn't make sense to me why, but anyone have any ideas?

Could be a code issue, kinda like when something is written on linux then uploaded into a web server quotations get fucked up.

Posted by Sushipunk on Sep-15-2009 06:50:

Yeah, I've noticed that too.

One possibility could be posting from a phone and using the wrong symbol? Or is the ` symbol often used in coding, and therefore people use it out of habit?

Nah, it is people specifically using the wrong key. The ` = the key next to the 1 and the ' is the " is the one next to enter.

Sunsnail: Yep, exactly.

He meant what I kinda said too - That it might be used out of habit if it`s somebody who writes a lot of code?

One of the people specifically I can think of, not at all. So, maybe that is the case, I don't know.

What programming language uses ` ?

In every programming language I know, I use ' constantly, but never `.

Even better! My interest is piqued even more. And just for the sake of being clear and not assuming too much, what languages do you know?

Java, PHP, Perl, C++

"Never" was an overexageration. Of course, you do use ` in those languages, but it's not so frequent that you forget what ' is. In PHP, I use ' more than " lol.

Anyway, people from outside the US and other English countries probably have no concept of ' in their alphabet. Either that or ` is used constantly in their language (eg. as an accent in Italian) so they just use it when they type English too.

Maybe lefties show a preference for using it, since it`s on that side of the keyboard?

Well, not me, at least. I always use ' (and I do a fair amount of coding / scripting)

So, you`re basically saying that all my theories suck?

It could VERY well be me.

code:
 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 ' +  ! " # $ % & / ( ) = ? * ~ ˇ ^ ˘  ˛ ` ˙  ˝

Depend on the keyboard layout i guess, because it doesn't make much sense to twist the right hand to press Alt Gr + 7 (on my layout) instead of a single key.

Alt Gr + 7?? I have a key for ` on my keyboard. On my laptops too. It's directly on the left of the 1 key, on the same line.

Yeah, it depends on the localized keyboard.

I have the ` key almost right above the ' on the right hand side, so I can sort of see why some people use it (although you actually have to press shift to get it). I just can't understand why it's there as it's only used in names in Finnish and even then it's very rare.

Depends on the layout, i dont even know what use the character to the left of my one key is (other than an mlt when pressing shift). Thats what i posted before was, first the top row of keys on the keyboard, then the same while holding shift and then alt gr.

Pure ignorance I guess. Or laziness.

Localised keyboards weren`t something I'd ever considered.

For me, the keys above the ' are both brackets/parentheses of sorts. Specifically: [] and {}

Up-left is P and up-right is \ or with shift it`s |

We have the same keyboard layout, what a coincidence! We're like keyboard buddies!

I have to admin, I did use for a while before I found the ' key. I have no excuse except eye cancer.
