big riffs and who likes them?
well me for a start hehe, but as most people here i listen to a lot of tunes and you rarely hear a track with them in it.
i think people underestimate the power they can make to a track
some of the big guns have made a name for them selfs m.i.k.e airwave sean tyas ect
so i say bring back the riffs
What the hell are you talking about? You mean the 3-minute-long breakdowns? We've already got more than enough of those, thanks.
You mean like in this track ?

Huge, recognisable hooks are great.
There are a lot of great sounding trance songs which have no hook, and that's okay. But I do love songs with massive hooks, where you only need to hear a second or two to recognise it - songs like Ferry Corsten's "Punk", Public Domain's "Operation Blade", ATB's "9pm (til I come)" and so on...

this tune is what i was referring to and others like it

riff is such a poorly defined term. of course there are great sounds out there that somebody might consider a riff and of course people like them. there are (this goes for anything right now) much more bad "riffs" out right now than good ones tho (by a long shot)
Big riffs?
You mean like the Sea Tides EP?
like astral projection - dancing galaxy? yeah i love them.
I love the big riffs and get pretty bored with trance tracks that don't have 'em.

So apparently "big riffs" means "long melodies", particularly longer than 4 bars. Of course, those phrases are not even close to being synonyms, but sure, they're nice to have. I would hardly say that they're rare, though; evidently you're listening to the wrong music. Almost every track I've ever produced and a great many that I listen to have long-ish melodies.
Don't get me wrong, I also hear plenty of boring repetitive tracks with no real hooks, but to me those are mostly filler dancefloor tracks.

Bassline riffs > melody riffs.
imo

| Originally posted by Subtle So id say recognizable lead sound, on a less or more recognizable melody line makes a big riff, having only a recognizable melody does not. This is how i see it anyways. |

that marcel woods track is the perfect example. its so fucking in your face, i love that track even tho its cheezy as fuck. the structure is awesome on it also, and the sound is fun.
