Paul Oakenfold @ Aria (Saturday 29th June)
i just came back from Aria , and i never remembered myself dancing all night long before , maybe Oakenfold is hypnotizing ?
over all it was good , let's focus point by point on how was the place :
-the music : Oakie is a Trance DJ , yes guys i said a TRANCE DJ , not breakbeats or prog (like people keep on saying nowadays) or maybe it was an exception for Montreal ?? i doubt it anyways . He played many trance tunes (that mostly i don't know about) and he closed his set with CJ Bolland - The Prophet and William Orbit - Addagio (it was remixed with a vocal tune).
-the venue : I've never seen Aria packed that much , maybe at Misstress Barbara 3 or 4 weeks ago ? there was no place to dance of course but at least there was enough cold air in many places . I think Aria has set a new record , i'm gonna say there were 5000 ... maybe more maybe less
-the crowd : haha as expected there were a lot of those we were making fun earlier , aka "paul van oakenfold the famous dj whose name is on internet" , a lot of Oakie's real fans , and as usual a lot of HOT CHICKS , God i love this city
-the man himself , Oakie : well he's not called "Oakie" for nothing , i mean he's really short (like Ferry Corsten) and he does a lot of his special moves while mixing , dancing and stuff . Somehow , i noticed something really weird , the guy was just relaxing , unlike other djs , he doesn't spend time looking for his vinyls or cueing , once he put a track he just sits back , and watches the crowd haha . I felt like the set was pre-recorded , i'm pretty sure he knew what he'd play all in advance , even his track selection was extremely small , 8 or 10 vinyls and 3 cds , that's all !!
-the TAs : it's always great to party with you guys , ZinG ahlamalek TechnoFreak El-See & all the others i've seen . See you all at the next event
i think that's all , if i remember something else , i'll add it later . Gonna watch the world cup final , DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES !!!!!
Vai La Brasil, O Penta Eh Nosso !

well if he's a trance dj how come there is not a trance track on his album bunkka? only breakbeats.
well i guess i will regret missing this but hey hopefully digweed will make it up to me hehe
I will not say Paul is better than John Digweed but this time Paul played better than any Digweed sets I have heard for the last 4 years!!
Paul rocked the place!
Oaky was good....but he has a special style, that I do not particularly love.
It was not barely as good as Johan Gielen last week!! But still, I enjoyed the evening.
See you guys at Rank 1
Whats up all...
Only had about 2 hours sleep so bare with me... I got there at 3:30, really lste compared to what I thought I was supposed to be there at.. Listened to Oakies last hour, and that hour to me was very good, he played awsome songs, I really had a great time, for that hour... after that I think DJ One was spinning for something like 2-3 hours, and he played some really good songs, and was impressed... But, I was most impressed when Maus came on, she was incredible for a DJ I hadn't heard of before (well, maybe a couple of times)... I love good looking female DJs... I was really tired when she came around, but saw her in her groove with the crowd, and I caught my second wind from her...
The place was really packed, the most I've seen Aria in a long time... Although the vibe was awesome, there were very many people... I highly doubt there were 5000 people, I thought it was more around 2000, and i think thats pushing it a bit...
I was very glad to meet TAs such as Taha, Malek, Zing, and all others... Biggy I was really happy to have met you, and thank you so much for an awesome night, and your great hospitality, you really know how to throw a party. Also, thanks for letting me in the DJ booth, I just wanted to see from upclose what it felt like, looking at the crowd a little closer, and everything...
All in all, I had a great time... Aria kicks ass...
TechnoFreak
oakie is one of the probably the best track mixer ever...
u never see him freaking out or getting anxious on mixes....the guy has been mixing for over 20 years, he can mix without headphones
last night was a good time. oakenfold put on a sweet show and the dj that played after him, dj one i think???, was pretty good aswell. hope everyone else that was there had a good time aswell, wish i had been able to meet some of the other TA's that were there, I asked a bunch of people there if they were TA's, sadly most of them had no idea what i was talkin about so i told them to check this place out sometime.
anyone remember some of the tracks he played last night???

| Originally posted by DJ Charlie What do you mean if you label your 12" ? and I think my pictures made my point... OAKIE mixes with headphones like any other real DJs... Headphones are not there for the style or to differ good from bad skilled dj... They use them to do there work (mixing) there's no if... else its not a dj as we know. |

i have heard of tiga doing it also
and oakie can mix without Headphones as well....if u mark the BPM on your vinyls and u really listen for your beats...u can match the lights on the EQ
What are you talking about?
It's all about how you mix!!
Dave Clarke do not need headphones if he want because he cut so this is really short mix and the beat do not have to macth perfectly.
But for sure you need heaphones if you want to mix normally. Because you have the room sound in the monitors and the next track sound in your headphones to match the beats. If you do not use headphones, how you will be able to listen the bass line of the up-coming track and mix it well?
Stickers on vinyl are use mostly to scratch and are not really working to mix, because on these vinyls there is no bass line or real music but only sounds that dj's use to scratch!
Biggy out of curiosity , do you spin ? or did you use to spin ?
No,
I am against people who want to be DJ because it's trendy!
But I know so many dj'ds and had so many discussions with all of them about everything regarding skills, DJ technic and equipment so I know a bit.

when i heard tiga did it with no headphones...it was the only thing that made sense to me
no sound....use your eyes
there can be any other way.....match a beat...make it a short mix and hope for the best
Oakenfold was actually pretty good, he exceeded my expectations and wasn't cheesy...I recognized a lot of songs which is always cool...he played a really old track, I think its off Tranceport..
Here are some tracks I remember:
-Dirty Vegas - Days go By
-Orbit - Adagio for Strings (Theme from Platoon)
-Layo & Bushwacka - Love Story
-A track from Deep Dish GU021 Moscow
-"This is only a test.." Name??
Oh yeah and he started a bit too early..
And were you guys around when the fire alarm rang (twice)?
I was wearing an Italy jersey and I think I spent more time talking to people about the WC than dancing but it was still cool...
Any TA's among these people by any chance??
see y'all @ Stereo (where do we get tickets? admission told me at Stereo but their number is out of service) ?!?!
tracklist...
Here is my personnal review of the night:
Aria is a great place, i love it, the place is nice and the staff is doing a great job.
the perfecto visualization where great, but repetitive.
Oakenfold started at 2:15, I think he began to play a little too early, because the crowd wasnt 'hot' enought...at first i was desoriented, because i though he would start with something like.. animal - lostit..lol
it is fun, because i have absolutly no idea what he played for the first 40 minutes, but the tracks were good. anyway, the mixing skills of oakenfold are sometimes great, and i dont think his set was pre-recorded.. some mix where so good that it was nearly impossible to know where he crossfaded it. unfortunatly, he had 3 or 4(maybe more) bad mix, i mean bad. but since its oakay, i guess its ...
(im so funny)
i was talking with someone about the 'show' he was giving, and i must say he gave us hell of a show, pointing everywhere, arms in the air like if he was god. furious looking (and yelling) at the turntables when his mix where bad (damn turntables, its their fault). That's the part i dont really like from oakenfold.. he is a legend, he is good, but i dont like the 'rock-star' -look im doing a show- oakie..
i think i noticed some TA behind him (smiling at a good track or mix, crying desperatly on bad mix, focused on the music.) but havent talk to you, because of my first failure trying to meet some of you guys <> it was nice meeting with tranceaddicts from halifax !
The place.when you have to schedule your visit to the bathroom, it is full. It definitly was worst than at the carnaval de l'amour.
for the tracklist here's what im sure (no order):
Flash - The day after (one of my fav tune. i think i cried.)
Arrakis - aira force (main mix)
Arrakis - aira force (lemon 8 remix)
Rendez-vous - tilt (the one from tranceport, dont know the remix, i think he played 2 differents versions like he did with arrakis-aira force)
er.. i cant remember more... maybe should i write my post at 8:45 sunday morning .. ?
