Steve Lawler originally gained interest in the music scene around the age of 16, listening to pirate radio stations. Beginning at age 17, Lawler staged a series of illegal parties in a tunnel under the M42 motorway from 1990 to 1994. After several parties, the event began to regularly attract over 500 people and eventually earned Lawler appearances at proper clubs.
Lawler's "big break" came in 1995, when DJ Jason Bye asked him to play daily at Ibiza's reputed Cafe Mambo of San Antonio "Sunset strip" fame. Here, he met Darren Hughes of the nightclub Cream, who signed him to a residency at Cream. In 2000, he released the single "Rise In" on Bedrock Records, which featured vocals by Prince Quick and reached #50 on the UK Singles Chart and #15 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play. This same year, he was asked by Boxed to mix the third entry in their Nubreed series, Nubreed 003. After his Nubreed release, Lawler approached Boxed with the idea for the Lights Out series. Lawler returned to London in 2002 with the beginning of his "Harlem Nights" event at The End, which has since been changed to "Viva Harlem Nights" to reflect Lawler's label Viva. Lawler founded the digital record label Viva Music in 2005, citing as a reaction to the increased sales in MP3s relative to vinyl and CDs. Lawler himself stopped using vinyl in live sets, exclusively using CDs.

Jimmy Hill is one of my favorite producers. Lawler needs no commentary.

| Originally posted by alexgea I thought Mark Knight was cheesy house aswell ... but turns out he played 2 hours of real tribal sounds (very similar to Lawler's set in July ... he evened played La Mezcla!!) and the last hour of Mark Knight was his productions but very fun. So DON'T say Knight is cheese because of his productions only plz! |

I did not holler for Lawler last night
So how was it guys? I missed Lawler for the 1st time in almost 5 yrs that I've been obsessed with him; I'm so sad at myself. I had 3 exams in 1 week (the 3rd one being yesterday) & I was totally exhausted...Curious to hear about Jimmy Hill too...comments & reviews please!
I've been Lawler about 5 times now, Sundance, Tribe nights and the Resolution a few years ago, and this was my least favorite set from all of them. I always have a good time when I go out, so I won't say it wasn't a good time, I just wasn't impressed with his set. I get a feeling that certain DJ's that play on those Thursday Tribe nights just don't take it as seriously as they would another club/event. Maybe it's the crowd, maybe it's the regular hours, not sure.
I've never seen Jimmy Hill, he was pretty good, had a smile on his face all night. It's refreshing to see, since Mr Lawler thinks he's something special, that's for sure.
Hope that helps!
i had a blast too but have to agree wasn't the best lawler set i've heard. Best for me in recent years was NYE @ Circus a few years ago and his last set @ tribe was better.
btw, steve lawler and jimmy hill passed by circus last night
For once a DJ saved his best for Toronto instead of Montreal. Lawler was absolutely insane last night in Toronto. Surprised to hear he was flat in Montreal, usually you Montrealers get the best while we get the left overs.
