A Lira? In your West Coast? It's more likely than you think.

My advisor and I have been talking about a possible doctorate in the American West Coast. We've got contacts in the University or Oregon, and she also mentioned the UC Santa Barbara as an interesting place to pursue this degree.

I'd like to know what these universities are like, and if there are any TA's studying in these universities. If things get more serious, I'll probably just go ahead and bug the locals, but I thought I'd turn to the CORe first. It's just a possibility anyway.

You mean West Coast, right?

UCSB is where Deadmau5 pornstar girlfriend attends. Don't know much else about it beyond that.

Yes, I realised my mistake right after I posted the thread. Ninja edited

University OF Oregon?

Fuck that, come up one more state and go to the University of Washington. I am sure you'd love it up here. Look at University of Puget Sound as well, but that school is fucking EXPENSIVE.

Nou, are you saying that because this university is better or just because you're proud of your state?

I'm going to check it out, though... I don't think I've ever read anything by a professor of this institution

UW is regarded as one of the better State schools in the country, they are a pretty prominent research school too.

There is some bias there though, my whole dads side of the family is alums and my grandfather taught there for 30 years and helped found the foreign language department.

Hands down: California. Its sunny and warm.

You really want to go to upstate and be cold for 10 months out of the year?

UW sucks, UofO has the Ducks. They have over 300 football uniform combinations. 300!

Really? That's interesting. Anyway, I need to know whether there's anyone in the linguistics department doing research in linguistic typology. I know there are lots of people in Oregon, Santa Barbara, and Berkeley working on this area... and that Berkeley is pretty damn much a no-no.

I share a grant with a scientist from UC Santa Barbara. Its a beautiful campus. I've camped in Oregon. It's a beautiful state. Crater Lake pwns my soul.

Banora, I live in a tropical country. Of course I'd rather be in the cold

So, have you seen Holly fox yet? You can't miss her, she's orange.

You're crazy. Anything less than 80 is considered frigid to me.

My internal wiring is all wrong. :/ I'm constantly freezing unless its 80+

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Sep-28-2009 23:22:

Its a balmy 65, last week it was in the 80s. Next week it will be in the 80s.

I love the weather here though. It really doesn't rain as much as you think. New York and Miami get far more rain than Seattle does. It just is gray around here during most of the winter. The sky is a matte gray that lends no definition to depth or height or anything.

There is a reason suicide rates are higher here...

But really it is grand, within 2 hours you can be at the beach, the mountains, the desert, a rain forest, on some of biggest or wildest rivers in the country, or any number of amazing out door activities. Canada is also right up the road, only about 4-5 hours drive from Seattle to Vancouver.

So where do you want to live?

I think when I'm done educating myself and conclude the grants that pay for my education, I'll head for the big island of Hawaii. I can be a pool girl at this resort just up from Kona Coast. It's gorgeous and the weather is delicious.

I wanted to buy some land and create a coffee farm above Kona (Kona Coffee is exquisite) but the coffee plantations are being poisoned by the VOG (volcanic gases mixed with the coastal fog).

Probably California. It just seems right for me.

UCSB is a good school. And located in a nice place. It can get pretty cold there.

In the most glamorous parts of CA, its not over 80F all that often. I've lived in Palo Alto (near San Fran), San Marino, and Rolling Hills (latter two are in Los Angeles County) and the marine layer tends to pull the temp down though lately, I dunno, there is not that great of a marine layer. However, you'd have to go to the desert to get consistently warm weather and the desert sucks.

This summer it was 100 for like 2-3 weeks total. Otherwise, it was like 75. So awesome.

UCSB is a great school. It's a top party school too, if you're into that thing. I absolutely love the environment up there.

Posted by Lira on Sep-29-2009 01:29:

By the way, in my opinion, it's not chilly until it hits below 15º... and, even then, I wouldn't dare to call it "cold" unless it's somewhere around 10º, or colder.

Above 30? No way! I can barely stand it here in a city as wet as the Sahara, I can't imagine how I'd survive that near the coast

UCSB kicks major ass. I live about 2 miles away. The girls are A+++
