Toronto vs Massives
Since my interest for EDM (circa mid 90s), I can recall many massives that took or still take place in Montreal. But what's the history of massives in Toronto? Anything still happening in terms of large parties? Was there ever something worthwile going to TO for in the past?
WHY ARE YOU POSTING THIS IN THE MONTREAL SECTION?
wanted to pick the brains of the mtl EDM community. everybody in here seems to know everything about every song, DJ, club, party... so why not my friend?
Labour Day, they usually have a big party, I think last year it was Armin and Markus. Guvernment always have someone big booked on the weekends. Vibe is shitty though!
some kids died at a rave late 90s so the Ontario gov't cracked down on raves (I believe, but I could be wrong) .. 'cause when you think of the population of the Golden Horseshoe and all the Skasians there
Toronto would have massive massives.
So no UFC, massives or decent sports teams in TO

Vancouver has all-night massives too, about 5,000+ people but attending one of those you'd think you're in Beijing or Hong Kong.
'Love the women but I can do without having to go thru the male fortress first.

Greater TO yeah, about 5.3M compared to Greater MTL's 3.8, but Golden Horseshoe is about 8M. Sure, you can factor in Ottawa and Quebec City for Montreal's edm draw but a TO massive would overflow the Rogers Center, imo.
However, MTL IS the EDM mecca of North America, imo, even the 'rip joints play good choons

) and I never heard of massive the size of black and blue, or bal en blanc style...
Yes, 'raves' have been made illegal here, so parties are held in business open every week. We have WEMF though, but it passes since it's a festival.

damn, I linked this to TOTA but not enough takers.
Malek, agreed it's not about the size as there are other variables (cultural, political, etc). And yeah, TO draws from Buffalo, Detroit, Windor, etc.
I used to hit many Toronto massives from mid to late 90's. Destiny, Syrous, Better Days Productions UK, Connected, Dose. They would book big-name dj's, of various genres. Great locations (warehouses, airport hangars, meat packing plants, etc..), well-organized. They normally ended at 8AM. As I wrote in a previous thread, there were also big "commercial" massives (similar to BeB, B&B, Celeb, Swirl) pretty much ended around 99 or 2000. These massives were often at exhibition centres, convention centres (i.e. the International Centre). The city of Toronto banned "raves" on city property / within city limits. Thereafter, the a lot of the EDM scene went more underground and appeared to be fragmented, with one-off events for drum & bass, breaks, psy-trance and so on. With the crackdown, this generated more business for the Guvernment mega-club (has about 6 bars/clubs in that complex), and other EDM-specific clubs, but mainly closing at around 4 to 5AM. The demise of the big massives were also due to several OD's in the late 90's early 2000s by partiers being irresponsible with their consumption. One fatality was at WEMF, one at a Hullabuloo (underground parking). That's from the top of my head. There was extensive media coverage and fear-mongering was rampant.
In a nutshell, Ontario, and specifically Toronto (and the powers that be) are more conservative, less tolerant. The typical party-goer in Mtl is more mature and has more $. I think this is where a lot of big differences lie. You will still find some quasi-massives in Toronto, but I would not consider those at the Guv, as it is a club, and at the Docks as it is an entertainment establishment, and most events usually end there around 5AM (I was there for the Industry reuinon party last Dec). There was an exception or two, usually when Tenaglia spins.
That's my take on things....
very insightful post. Yeah, it seems Montreal partiers have more edm options and don't feel out of place if older (than say their TO peers), and older folks tend to have more disposable income, indeed.
With all that said, the Guv is def not short on 50-year-old skasians
