Classical Style Guitar & Techniques

Greetings gentlemen

I realize that this topic has been covered previously. Of course, finding the right guitar tone & texture can still be a challenge. I was wondering if anyone here has come across any guitar plugins that sound particularly 'real' - especially when it comes to the hammer-on and slide (portamento) techniques. Previous recommendations have been RealGuitar and AAS String Studio.

Some artists who have mastered these techniques are:

Signum - Riddles in the Sand - listen to 1.20-1.27 - found something on the Korg VSC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jAcOO40qJ0

Orjan Nilsen - La Guitarra listen to 3.40-...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omsl4JILlAs

I have looked in Sculpture but can't seem to find any preset that is close enough (Nylon Fingered Pluck is probably the closest).

It is almost 99% probable that the tools required are already there in sculpture for a nice and prominent hammeron/slide sound. My failure to achieve such effects is, IMO, based upon a lack of understanding about optimal methods of processing.

Any kind person is therefore more than welcome to reflect upon their guitar plugin experience (particularly with regard to slide & hammeron techniques) here. Alternatively, one might point those curious to learn and create in the right direction if this had already been comprehensively covered by Trance Addict.

Thank you

why don't you just put an ad on craigslist for a studio guitar player for $25.00. then you can be very authentic. are you saying this youtube clip that you know it was a plug or are you asking?

Agreed. Although I cannot be certain, I'd be willing to bet that both of these tracks are using either a real guitar, or sampled from a track with a real guitar. Guitar (and other plucked instruments) is one of those instruments that can be hard to simulate. It might be just as easy to sample one or find a guitar player as Anthony suggested. That Orjan Nilsen track definitely sounds like it was sampled from something Spanish if it wasn't played live.

i'll play the guitar for you for a fee.

anyways i have never, ever come across any plugin that sounds even remotely like a decent guitar. nothing sounds better than the real thing imo, and vsts can't emulate simple guitar techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, etc with any accuracy.

honestly, i have a hard time making a real guitar sound particularly excellent, because making a guitar sound really polished and professional takes investing money into decent hardware (ie amps, effects, cables, etc). software and hardware amp emulators don't do the trick (though line6's POD and NI's guitar rig come close).

25 $ ? I'm pretty sure every studio player will tell you to go fuck yourself.
Union fee per hour in most places is 100$ minimum.

from that orjan track, i remember reading a thread on trance.nu where orjan himself said he was "playing that guitar melody" on the keyboard.

so he possibly could've used a plugin. not sure which though.

or just learn how to play the guitar

VSL has a classical guitar librairie but sample sounded like some of the newer rompler keyboards. there is something off about the tone and the action is way too clean.

they were most likely university freshmen that boughta guitar a few months ago and not studio caliber musicians. Or you live in honduras.

I play guitar, but I'm having trouble getting an accurate guitar sound out of an VST. The best I came so far, was from RealGuitar - don't underestimate this little gem. I know what sound you want to achieve, but I think you can come pretty close with Realguitar, compression, eq, delay and lots of reverb.

Here's a quick example of something I did with RealGuitar.

http://www.box.net/shared/igo53h72m2

Keep in mind I've almost no velocity variation in this clip. If I'd spend a little time on this, I could get it extremely close to sounding like a real guitar.

Then there are sample libraries. The best I've ever heard for this particular sound is EWQL Gypsy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57hqPPKxsyY - rewind to 2:20 and be amazed. But this thing is so expensive....

But recording a guitar to sound like this is not easy. Firstly you'd need a spanish guitar, 2 mics - one at body, 2 at neck, a recording room, preamp, etc... and a very good acoustic guitar player that can play with his fingers. Unfortunately, I only have an electric guitar and no mics

Here's another track with a guitar (played by Geert) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gq3eo4beB28 - rewind to 3:28 and sit back
I personally love the guitar tone in that track. But that's a real guitar with an experienced player so... something like this would be hard to do with VSTi's.

I know that a professional musician wouldn't work for 25$. Perhaps you lack the ability to distinguish what a professional musician sounds like so to you , you think they are studio musicians but really, they are half assed guitar lackeys that work at guitar center and know a few chords and can't read music. I'm glad you found someone but the argument here is in your use of language. Studio musician means you are at least getting the union flat rate. Obviously it is you that needs to do a little homework.

Surely as someone that tries to sell his music, you can appreciate other people's work and pay them what they are worth ? 25$ is what you pay a crappy guitar teacher to teach for 30 minutes.

Thanks Vikernes

I'll try out real guitar & try slapping some portamento on it =D

Signum said in a video I watched on astateoftrance.com that he found a plugin on the korg vsc that sounded like a real guitar.

... i don't even know how to respond to this. i had some total stoner of a kid come over that i'm pretty sure all i did was feed his drug habit for a day. he played some of the finest guitar solos i could of asked for, in fact this remix placed me top 10 in a sea of remixes. he was more than content to eat some pizza, take $25 and be done in 30min.

did i get paid for my remix? nope... did he feel used? nope... in fact he helped promote it when it was done. i'm the one out of pocket on this.

i'm all for people making a living of what we do and i even offered him a royalty % if it came to that but some people man care a lot more about making music with others than money. 1 guy even turned money down if i let him do another track with me. i reach out to a lot of musicians (singers, drummers, saxophone player, guitar & bass guitar) and i can tell you people care about an end result and 99% of the time that end result isn't the pennies we make.

guitar example from a kid i found on craigslist for $25...

that is great that you reach out but they are not professionals and that is all i'm contesting. You stated in your first post to find a "studio musician" for 25$ and I merely stated that it isn't going to happen. Musicians that are good enough are good enough because they spend their entire day doing it and you can't do that if you don't get paid.

I think we are just thinking about different standards. When I think studio musician, I am thinking about a caliber of player that I can provide a score and they nail it in one take, What you are doing is more of a "band" type collaboration that has little potential to make enough money to warrant paying someone and of course the money is not the primary goal in the first place. THey aren't professionals so they benefit from the recording experience so it works out both ways.
