stuck in a rut

although i still make music frequently,

i don't have any excitement with it. I usually just make something when i'm dickin around, and nothing good is on tv.

I was thinking about maybe dropping a few hundred bucks into it, just to kick me into gear again.

Right now i'm using reason and i'm wondering what's a good direction to go from there.

Should i spend some money on cubase and some vsts? maybe get a Mac Mini and get logic?

i duno. Just really throwing out some ideas at the moment...

a little guidance would be great.

learn a new daw. or buy some new music. dj. get a hardware drummachine or a sampler as said previously just for fun. try make a totaly different genre that u use to. for example try make music that fits a racing video game. its really fun.

If that's true then BTG will never make anything worth listening to.

logic

usually the hardest thing for me to overcome is lack of creativity some days. if it's right away i'll do things on other projects like simple stuff, rename the tracks, make sure the processing is in the right chain, cut audio tails, get some levels right, etc. Those things don't require you to do much more than grunt work but it gets the juices going. If from there you're still idea list there are a variety of things you can do to get inspired but without knowing you personally i'd just be listing off my own

Take a trip over to the DJ Booth and you'll find endless threads about vinyl vs digital, and the validity of Ableton/Traktor as a DJ tool. Everyone has a different opinion on the matter, but it seems as though the general consensus is that DJing without some level of hands on control is just no fun and produces stale sets.

It amazes me how often this is debated in DJing, but how it's hardly ever brought up in producing. Newcomers to production are so accustomed to downloading a copy of Reason or FL and working from there that they totally fail to realize that, until the last decade or so, electronic music was largely created with hardware.

You won't find many people who prefer to DJ with a keyboard and mouse on Ableton. So why is it that producers so often prefer to write music in the exact same way?

Go buy a MIDI controller with a shitload of knobs. Better yet, go buy a second hand hardsynth and a cheap MIDI interface. Or a machinedrum or other rhythm composer. Get SOMETHING you can put your hands on. Stop arranging and start recording.

creativity and excitement is the least of my problems. im having more trouble with mixing and learning new equipment etc, but it has to be done as im not 10% happy with what ive been using before. and then i have problem finding time beacuse im having a 50% job, studying fulltime, and have alot of other interests as well. im saying to myself that im gonna use the weekends for music but it always ends up going out with friends instead or in the winter theres skiing. oh if only the day where a few hours longer and the week too (especialy the weekend).

ive fizzled out of making music production wise that is, i still do the rare edit here and there. mostly i concentrate in mixing nowadays. perhaps i should remaster my old tracks. its a shame ive lost the original synths and stuff for them!

perhaps you should find a gf or something lol

i was in a rut for a year or so, something fierce.

I went out and saw Christopher Lawrence completely destroy a tiny club with nameless tracks and nameless edits, shit i think i counted 3 real breakdowns the entire set.

that shit lit my fire and some. go see a show, you will justify all your means by witnessing the ends in action.
