Backing up Gmail
After hearing about the disaster with the Sidekicks, and everyone losing their data, I've gotten pretty paranoid about backing up my email. I rely heavily on Gmail and have thousands of emails saved and broken down into folders. I thought now would be a good time to back these emails up.
I just wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations on how to do this. I've done a bit of research online, but I didn't see anything that was quick, efficient (and something I understood how to do! lol).
Note: I don't want to do it through Outlook, b/c I don't like Outlook and do not use it.
Thanks
i think the only easy options are by using mail programs like outlook.. if you don't like it there are a lot of other ones such as thunderbird. in all of them you should be able to highlight all of your emails and export them into 1 file

Gmail lost people's e-mails?
Edit: ok, I read about the Sidekicks fiasco, but I still don't understand what gmail has to do with that.

If not for that then I'd probably just use Outlook 2007, it's improved a lot. In any event: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ |

I recommend printing them onto good old fashion paper and put them in a folder marked e-mails

It's balls easy to intergrate a gmail account into Outlook and once you import all your emails into Outlook, you just save your PST. Done... Carry on using GMAIL with the web interface for a month or two, then go back to OUTLOOK, save/backup your PST again... |
Lisa when I used outlook about 8 yrs ago I am sure you have to set up your email.....ie: what smtp server to use. what email address you are using. not sure if you can use gmail or not been awhile.
but you definitely need what your outgoing mail server address will be and your incoming. they are call SMTP and POP servers.
yup your being paranoid, I wouldn't worry about it
Google has 12 bajillion harddrives with a quadrillion redundant backups, your emails of pictures of cats aren't going anywhere.

For those interested, I stumbled on this: http://www.gmail-backup.com/
It's a LOT easier and quicker then outlook.
Holly sh*t I've never seen so much chaos unless it's Lisa asking for advice ...
Your mail will be fine in gmail, hotmail has been around for years and yet I don't recalling a single data lose.
If you really have importaint data like that, why is it stored in gmail as a primary source? What happens if your HD on your computer dies? Shouldn't you have a backup of it, in another form if an offline source?
Well since your that paranoid, you should be backing up your HD 2x to be safe.
A) Another pHD or massive USB key
B) DVDs

It's mainly emails from school sorted by class, keepsake emails I want to keep, vacation stuff, reservations/order confirmations and stuff. If my stuff is lost it's not the end of the world, but I would like to save it from being lost to save myself time and added stress if it were. To have to go through and manually save every email would be a waste of my time when I can just sort it in Gmail. As for my HD, it's definitely backed up...x5 (desktop, laptop, family computer + 2 externals, on top of the backups mine and the family computer does on its own). |

Real backup: Mozy.com.
Or tape drives.
