Review: Destiny Halloween Party
Review Time
Got there around 11 and waited in line for about 20 mins before getting in. The 'V.I.P.' guestlist area was so stupidly organized for this I can't begin to say, as was the whole arrangement of drinking/non drinking areas. Was not the best start to the night but fortunately was not a sign of things to come.
By the time everyone had their coats off, NuERA was on the decks giving everyone a very nice prog warm up set. Really nice groovy tunes with excellent mixing, perfect for that time of night to get everyone in the mood. The room picked up somewhat after with Jelo, but sorry to say that I think every single track he played was absolute garbage.
I went over to the main room at this point to check out some DnB or Jungle, I'm really not familiar with these genres so apologies if I got it wrong. It was a complete Rave atmosphere in there; half the people were completely zoned out and the other half were so wired they could not stop dancing. I bet that room is going to smell like Weed for another week, it was worse than a phish concert in there.
Back over to the side room I went for the main reason I came, Christopher Lawrence. This was my 5th time seeing him and every time has been slightly different, for better or worse. I have to say, this was hands down the best I've ever heard him, by miles and miles. He started off with some progressive psy for a good 40 mins. Really good stuff for dancing with little breaks, adding different emotions to every track and flow was top notch, something he's always critisized for. After that he explored some of the full on world, not too full on but enough to give a more psychadelic feeling with spacey melodies, still flow was right on. For the rest of the set he mixed some uplifting, tech trance and hybrids of the what I just mentioned, never going off cue. Couldn't have asked for more and reinsured my intial thoughts that he's one of few Trance DJ's that one should always make the trip out for as it's always different.
Right before his encore track, the closing DJ came on to announce that the stage was being shut down due to the complaints from the Island people, so the last track was going to be CL's encore. I'd always heard about the complaints, but this was the first event I've gone to when something had been shut down that way, so I guess that's a memory on its own lol. I left after the stage was closed.
Concluding thoughts:
I didn't mind the 4/4 acts being in the side room as some Destiny parties have very awkward vibes when stages are shared between various, unrelated genres. The sound was pretty good, clear and zero distortion, crowd was a mix but definetly to the younger side. I know alot of people don't want to go to these events for obvious reasons or will go on very rare occasions, myself included. It must be said that it is good for a change as the rave scene is dead and this would be the closest thing to it... so I'd encourage everyone to check it out every so often if a desirable act comes to town.
Good seeing all the TA's out, nice meeting you NuERA and once again, great warm up set.
Now that's a fuckin proper party review!!!
As Mr.Ben already mentioned,CL destroyed the place for 2 hours non stop.
I must say for me this was one of his best performance in Toronto in recent memory.CL is truly professional and god bless him for last night for making me dance FINALLY.
good review man, thumbs up!! ))
Overall it was a great party! Christopher Lawrence played an amazing set.
The only two issues i had with the party was the absolutely horrible set by Jelo and the 4 o'clock close... but whatever - CL made it worth it!
I was there for 40 minutes of Jelo's set. I thought he was slamming down some great tunes
