discuss.

i guess we will hear more about this soon.

Posted by woscar on Nov-05-2009 20:41:

Well, I pretty much only used it to listen to samples. Still a shame though.

Posted by Clovis on Nov-05-2009 20:44:

That place was always a waste of time for me, haven't been on there in almost a year now.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-05-2009 20:46:

i never really used it either, but it seems to be a popular site for the trancers so i figured that i would post it up.

Posted by woscar on Nov-05-2009 20:47:

I liked how you could sample pretty much the whole track. Apart from that, yeah.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-05-2009 20:47:

whatpeopleplay is pretty good for that as well.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Nov-05-2009 20:56:

And I was just about to go and download a DJ. Shit.

Huh?

I love whatpeopleplay.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-05-2009 22:59:

same.

the selection can be a little lacking sometimes though.

Posted by Nik Novo on Nov-05-2009 23:29:

The main problem was probably that you had to buy credit before you could buy stuff. Personally, I don't like this system, that's why I never bought anything there.

Or did they change that system?

Always seemed like a place for House DJs (or fans). Especially given their top 100 and their selection of tunes.

This is too bad. I've actually used them more than ever this year but even though they give away freebees (on every 15 track you buy), they can't beat BP.

Somehow not a surprise.

Here is a reply I got from an e-mail I sent last night:

DJdownload.com will continue to operate for many years to come. The site has been bought by a new operator and we are looking forward to continuing to provide you with great tunes!

There should be some improvements to the site in the next few months and we'll be adding even more content as we look to expand our offering!

Regards
Adam

IMO DJ Download is one of the best shops around. Definitely better than Beatport, altho Beatport generally has a better selection.

of course. multiple label owners that received the email from them today!

google djdownload.com administration.. lots of hits with news posted all over.

here's the email

"Dear Label Partner

It is with great regret that we have to inform you that DJdownload Limited has been placed into administration by the Directors of the company effective today.
The Directors have worked extremely hard over the past few months to try and save the company: overheads were reduced and attempts to increase revenues were made but ongoing efforts to raise further finance were unsuccessful. Despite their best efforts the company was not able to continue to trade.
We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years and we wish you all the best in the future.
If you have any questions with regard to UNPAID ROYALTIES from DJDownload Limited please contact:
Marguerite Webster - Case Administrator at Bridge Business Recovery
E-mail: xxx
Phone: xxx

Yours sincerely
Justin Pearse"

Juno have bought the business. Juno and DJdownload will combine their strength and make the electronic music download market more competitive. Under the newly agreed arrangement, the administrators will still be called in, with the website continuing to trade via Juno's content and administrative guidance. The front-end experience, however, will remain the same, with Juno taking care of all back-end operations. Justin Pearse will continue as Head of Music at DJDownload.
"DJ Download is a pioneer in digital music and a key player in the dance music business", said Juno founder Richard Atherton. "We believe that with the combined strength of the Juno and DJdownload brands, we can make the download market more competitive and improve customer choice."

This. I purchased one track from them maybe about four years ago, and I only did so because Beatport had a territory restriction on it. I've visited it once every few months or so, but have never had a pleasant experience.

and how is that going to work exactly? unless they dramatically cut prices to put the onus on beatport, i fail to see how merging two of the biggest players in the edm download market will "increase competition"

Posted by skip on Nov-07-2009 09:29:

Best thing on DJ Download was their player. Previewing the whole track instead of a crappy 0:30 ti 1:30 min sample. I've bought a ton of tracks I wouldn't have bought otherwise because of this. The site had some problems though. Search function was a bit crappy, selection wasn't as good as Beatport (no one has that though) and the flash they used for the player was badly coded, it'd take 100% of cpu if you left it open for a long time. I also would have liked to be able to queue a whole page of search results to the player with one click, instead of clicking each and every single one tune separately to the player. Despite all this, it was the place where I've bought most of my stuff in the past few years.

I hope they don't go to shit because of this. If they improve, I'll be really glad. But we'll see how it'll end up.

agree.

Posted by stev on Nov-09-2009 15:55:

why is it so hard for anyone to come out and compete with beatport? as a software developer, i dont see why its so difficult to provide an intuitive GUI to buy mp3s. ecommerce is not rocket science.
