Vitamins

Is there any real benefit to taking 1000% or more your daily recommended dosage in a given vitamin? A single 500mg vitamin C tablet for example is 833% the daily value. Is that really that much more beneficial to the immune system?

Also, does anyone here take any? And aren't they available by script only in a few countries?

Your body just excretes what you don't use.

You could overdose on certain vitamins and actually do yourself damage.

The more the better!

Just the ones that aren't water soluble [a.k.a. the ones you cannot piss the excess out].

Woooow, you're so smart. I want to be like you someday. Shut the fuck up captain obvious.

Back on topic, I take ~3 grams of vitamin C daily. Great thing especially if you work out regularly.

FDA's vitamin C RDA is full of shit.

I drank a pint of Tropicana this morning, because I've got a sore throat, and my piss has smelled of orangey goodness all day.

"vitamin overdoses" generally aren't life threatening. you're just gonna get some diarrhea and some other minor symptoms that will make you miserable but won't kill you. the only time it's life threatening is if you have certain diseases, like liver disease.

on that note, i've been taking a B12 pill every day and i definitely can feel a difference in my energy level and mood. it's like ritalin but without the jittery crackiness. the shitty part is that i have a sensitive stomach and i've been having some bad episodes of indigestion the last couple of days. so i'm thinking it's too much of a coincidence and that it's related to the B12 every day. i wish i could administer a shot of that shit in my ass myself.

Just hook yourself up with some:
quote:
Natural food sources of B12
Vitamin B12 is found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products.[36] One half chicken breast provides some .3 g per serving or 6.0% of one's daily value (DV), 3 ounces of beef, 2.4 g, or 40% of one's DV, one slice of liver 47.9 g or 780% of DV, and 3 ounces of molluscs 84.1 g, or 1,400 % of DV.

Looks like liver and moluscs are the way to go.. Liver pate on toast, or some fried squid?

You're a pescatarian

Everybody should be taking B12 supplements. Even meat eaters.

I take a woman's multivitamin, B12, and potassium every day. In the winter, I take vitamin D and E, and when I am getting sick I take Echinacea and vitamin C.

like jenny has mentioned before (and it's pretty much common knowledge among people who are generally educated about health and drugs, etc...), potassium is not something you want to mess with. you should only be taking potassium pills if you have a deficiency or if your doctor tells you too. eating a banana once a day should be sufficient.

Posted by echosystm on Nov-13-2009 14:54:

If I take a whole multivitamin, my piss goes orange, so I know they are a complete waste of time like this. Instead, I split them in thirds or quarters and take one tablet throughout the day.

Posted by Slylee on Nov-13-2009 15:43:

multivitamins make me sick to my stomach. someone mentioned (i think chimera) that it pretty much means i'm getting enough vitamins already through my diet. i guess it makes sense. i DO eat tons of veggies and salad and fruit so i'm definitely getting enough nutrients through my diet and don't need a multi.

i'm going to start taking calcium though because i don't drink enough milk and i'm a skinny white girl (we're the most prone to osteoporosis when we're old), so i figure the sooner i start taking calcium supps, the better.

Posted by ZeJayMan on Nov-13-2009 15:49:

i eat food and then take a shit, repeat.
