Torchlight

Holy shit.

Best $20 I have ever spent.

http://www.torchlightgame.com/

It's somewhat mindless hack and slash, but it's rock fucking solid. Diablo 2.5 imo.

Posted by leph555 on Nov-14-2009 12:54:

too bad there is no multiplayer

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-14-2009 13:47:

No shit! It's in the works though, they're planning on making it an MMO of sorts. I think the engine is fucking perfect for that sort of thing, and it's such a light damned game.

I'm far more hooked on this than I ever was on Dragon Age.

While im not a fan of diablo style game this one looks interesting (logve the graphics). But even after 30 hours spent in Ferelden im still only 16% complete so this one will have to wait

This looks pretty good...I think I'll give this a go, but after dragon age

Posted by Omega_Blue on Nov-16-2009 01:19:

just acquired it today, but haven't installed it yet. once i finish my work i'm gonna check it out.

i'm still playing borderlands though, so... ehhh. i hate starting multiple games and never finishing them

Posted by Omega_Blue on Nov-18-2009 09:20:

ok so i played through the first floor..

it's totally a diablo clone. the sound effects are even the same in some instances (when a piece of cloth flips out of a treasure chest it makes the same "whoosh" noise) and very, very similar music (the town music has the same dreary finger-picked guitar playing much like the town music of diablo 1).

i do agree with the other guy, it's a bit childish/cartoony- i wish they would've made it a darker game. but it's a ton of fun nonetheless, and i like how you can equip a crap ton of shit (like shoulder armor, belts, etc). definitely needs multiplayer also. oh well, this will tide me over til diablo III hopefully.

on a sidenote, this game runs perfect with every graphic setting maxed out on my laptop with onboard nvidia video. that's 1280x800 resolution too. very nice.

i really wish i could get into these diablo games. i feel left out

apparently the game counts the 6 origin stories as part of that 100% tho :/

Posted by Moongoose on Nov-18-2009 13:58:

Tried this torchlight at a friends palce...like the graphics but not my cup of tea. The only diablo style game i ever got into was diablo 1 and even then i guess it was because i was too young to know better Though i have to give the developers props for putting all this together in under a year. They must have been locked in the basement for 26 hours a day to get it done so fast.

As for DA, guess i wont ever have the 100% then unless i just go trough the origin stories...not that i wont go trough the game many times, i just dont see myself playing as a dwarf or something like that...any rpg i always play as a game, no matter how many times i go trough it...rouge or fighter...meh, nothing beats a good fireball (especially in this game...throw a fireball for a knock down effect with my mage, then freeze them with Morrigan, use prison to instakill a low level enemy and perhaps another instakill with allistars or lelianas critical shot...then take on anything else that might be left alive...)

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Nov-18-2009 14:05:

haha same! (you wrote "game" instead of "mage" the first time btw)

played every RPG ever as a mage, or at least the closest thing to a mage. magic is my favourite part of speculative fiction

oh yeah, and fuck dwarves. human or elf or an evil race. but fuck dwarves or halflings etc.

And there's your explanation. I also don't like the art style, but I do think it's nice when companies focus on making games fun rather than always pushing the latest technology.

FTW

I get confused easily and its the same 4 letters anyway

Also, i have fire magic maxed out on my mage, ice magic on Morrigan, so an easy way to clar a room is to send in Allistar (who wears anthing with an ice or fire resistance that i can find)to draw attention away from the mages, then cast blizzard and firestorm at the same time then use both mages to heal the fuck out of Allistar. Any enemy that by chance survives the brutal simultaneous casting of firestorm and blizzard is weak enough that he/she/it can be killed by simply sneezing in their approximate direction.

And though with the above tactic Leliana is mostly useless in combat (she does score a lot of criticals with the right equipment though) shes invaluable for gaining experience. You get more XP if she disarms a few traps from a random encounter than from bringing down a damn high dragon, thats just not right.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-18-2009 14:57:

Well yeah it's a Diablo clone - the devs are mostly ex-Blizzard North employees. The art style is obviously quite similar to WC3 as well. Probably the same art team.

Apparently Blizzard became suspiciously quiet the week Torchlight came out. Not to imply blizz has something to worry about - I think they just didn't want to be excluded from any BBQs.

I'll say this much though - if Diablo 3 doesn't have pets or a pet class of some sort the way Torchlight does, I am going to be severely disappointed. In Torchlight, every class gets a pet (2 choices, cat or dog), and they can wear amulets and rings, have an inventory the size of your own, and you can even teach them to cast spells via scrolls. My dog runs around biting shit and summoning skeletons. Fucking rad. And best of all - you can send your pet back to town to sell everything in his inventory and he'll come back like a minute later (alterable by talents) with the cash. No more inane trips back to town to unload all of your crap!

This sort of shit is what bugs me about Dragon Age - the numbers are all fucked up. Itemisation scaling and equipment stats are fucking awful - it's like they didn't even think to make it sort of interesting or even. It seems to be a recurring theme amongst console ports and games they intend on milking until they're dry. Oh sorry, meant "expanding". Like, why is my starting dagger at 4.0 damage and the dagger I kill the Archdemon with 6.4? Is this my fault? WHAT DO THESE NUMBERS MEAN THEY'RE TOO DAMNED SMALL FOR ME TO CARE ABOUT THEM.

One more reason to roll a mage, I suppose. Bioware still hasn't topped Baldur's Gate 2 though.

Posted by Moongoose on Nov-18-2009 15:06:

You better hope that Torchlight keeps you entertained for a long while now, because you know that Blizzard will have to look trough it and put in anything that D3 doesn't already contain, and since if i remmeber correctly no info about D3 said anythin about a pet which can sell your equipment they will have to work that in somehow...and knowing BLizzard just putting a damn dog into the game could take years

Agree on the numbers though, it could use ore balancing in that department, but considering that the game was already in development for almost 5 years any more tinkering with it could have just spoilt it more. But hey, as it is now at leat Leliana is useful for something, its nice to have a female rogue in a party, otherwise it would be three mages and a tank and that sounds too much like a movie title to work out.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-18-2009 15:07:

Dear God, you're right. What have we done?

Posted by Moongoose on Nov-18-2009 15:18:

At least now youll have the time to practice a bit by beating D1 and D2 several times so that you can be in good form when D3 comes out...whenever that may be

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-18-2009 15:50:

Been waiting on a solid release date so I can time those right.

Anyone know if there is a resolution patch for D1? I think it plays in like 640x480 or something ridiculous like that. I can't stand pixels that large, they could swallow me whole!

D2 did already have a merc system though, and with the redesigned inventory system (haven't really kept up to date on that) it should be easier to collect junk for reselling later. They might just tweak that system and make something similar out of it.

it should run at least 800x600 which should be sufficient enough. i just re-finished playing diablo on my laptop a few months ago and it looked fine, imo.

Action RPG my ass! looks like Diablo 3
