This weeks installment of Hot Mess Tuesday welcomes Projekt member Sir Fice and a very special set from David Schmalz and opening the evening will be Hot Mess host Christopher James. Expect a recipe of Deep house, Tech house and some cerebral techno.
Sir Fice
With roots in early-nineties Midwest rave culture, Sir Fice (Nate York) has an appreciation and deep understanding of techno's history. Influenced early on by Plastikman's "Sheet One", Sir Fice's techno sound has organically progressed into the modern minimal sound of today.
Although minimal is in vogue, Sir Fice doesn't let his large collection of techno classics gather dust in the back of the bin. Effectively teasing in classics of yore with the new creates a balance of tension building and full on maximal release that many new school jocks tend to neglect. With 10 years of experience behind the decks, Sir Fice's aggressive mixing style distorts the line between classic and contemporary, destroying dance floors along the way.
To date, he's played alongside techno heavyweights Steve Bug, Derek Plaslaiko, Acid Circus, Maetrik, Punisher, Robert Armani and Woody McBride to name a few. As a promoter, he has been involved with the successful two-year run of the AudioTribe crew's weekly "HomeBrew" events and now has dedicated his time to projekt, a collaboration specializing in bringing world class, boundary pushing techno and minimal to the Midwest.
David Schmalz
Calling Milwaukee home, David Schmalz is a classical pianist whose love for rhythm and groove snatched him for the cause of the house music legacy. Vibrant and fresh, his experience and instinct is in step with the revitalizing force that turns the revolution of the sound.
Growing up in training as a classical musician, David spent his childhood discovering the infinite shadings of color in music, and its power to move and unite people. While championing the classics, he found within himself a hunger to boldly step out and create, the same hunger that drove his heroes to write the very music he studied, and he learned to improvise in order to express himself. This path lead through Jazz and World idioms, and when friends in school introduced him to electronic instruments, he stepped across to a new continent of expression. While most DJs play records and then approach the intricacies of production, David performed ambient live PA sets long before he had a clue what a DJs job is all about.
Living firmly in the present, his journey has brought him to the point where studio work is realized in the art of the DJ, where playing records is as potent a vehicle of improvisation as playing the piano. Earning his place in a global community of producers is the process he lives out, and that community is taking ear.
We look forward to seeing you on the floor!
