What causes the crackling/popping when using low pass filters?

What causes the crackling/popping when using low pass filters sometimes?

I have tried using a soft clipper, thinking it was distortion causing this, but that did not help. I have also tried using a limiter to keep the db at a certain level (-3 etc) but it still pops when the filter is opening up.

This mostly happens when I am sweeping the filter form a low frequency to a high one, but sometimes it happens when going from high to low.

Any help is appreciated.

What filter and what DAW are you using?

Sorry guys, I fixed it. It was a speaker, it was not an issue with the DAW after all.

usually what causes this is the envelopes on the synth. If your attack and release are too short it leads to popping.

It could be midi slightly out of sync too. I've had that happen to me before with the notes triggering either early or late.

You are absolutely right about envelopes and it will cause pops even though he said it was his speaker.
Another thing you cant forget too are compressor envelopes. *Especially the attack & release not set right with kicks. If there is any silence in the front or back of the kick sample the compressor pushes the silence untill it basically makes that sharp low popping sound.
