ATTN: TA DJs: I would like your input

A:

The first thing I would like to address in this thread is the internet radio show issue.

We're always going to have people creating threads with links to their upcoming internet radio shows, despite the stickied thread stating not to. My only thought is that posting radio show links IS a pretty legitimate form of promoting oneself as a DJ. I'm well aware of the stickied thread in MD, but I feel this falls under 'DJ Promotion' more than it does 'Music Discussion'.

To make this forum a touch more useful to up-and-coming DJs who want to promote themselves in any way possible, do you guys think that a similar thread, like in MD, would be a good thing in DJ Promo, or completely redundant? Specifically, I would make a stickied thread where ALL future radio shows would have to be posted, and any threads made outside of the sticky would be deleted.

B:

The second point of discussion is that, here and there, we get threads from the owners/scouters/whatevers of internet radio stations, asking for DJs to contribute their mixes, which will then be aired. There REALLY doesn't seem to be a place for this on TA, other than this forum. And, again, I feel that this is a legitimate way of promoting ones skills as a DJ.

How do you guys feel about a stickied thread specifically for that?

I really, really, really don't want DJ Promo to be filled with radio show threads and radio promoters advertising their new station, as I think it would obscure the threads where mixes are put up for peer review, which should be the focus of this forum. However, would a couple of stickied threads addressing these things be a nice middle ground?

Tell me your thoughts and feelings people! If you think it's a shit idea, then say so. If you have other ideas, put them up for discussion

Doesn't matter to me either way. lol

Sorry

it'd be a bit redundant but i think it would help the congestion of radio show nonsense in the dj forum. i say yea.

Congestion shouldn't be too much of an issue now, since I'll be locking/removing offending threads anyway. But would these [proposed] stickies make this forum a bit more useful?

it couldn't hurt, what's one more sticky? you've actually motivated me to start writing guidelines for the producer's promotion forum as well- i just realized that there isn't any guidelines, and people were wondering why the hell i was moving and closing threads without any rules to follow

Posted by Teezdalien on Nov-20-2009 11:12:

I think it's good idea and frankly I can't see why it hadn't happened here in this forum long ago.

Posted by Adam420 on Nov-20-2009 16:31:

I think stickied threads should do the trick

i'd say do whatever you think is best, and if it gets out of hand or we're not happy with something - we'll let you know.

i'm with clovis, at this point i could care less either way.

A. why not make something like what was just implemented on the NYTA forum board: an event subforum except entitled "Now Playing" where people can post link streams by time so that whoever actually WANTS to listen in, can just head to this forum and see what's playing and when.

IMO best way to do it without flooding other sections, and for a little while put a sticky up letting people know where to find the streams in the other forums just so they know a change has been made. and be strict and make sure to move/delete any threads that don't follow suit

B. a sticky for that would be perfect.

Would it be possible to have 2 DJ Promotion forums? One for Mixes and one for radio shows?

A lot of mixes that get posted get buried quickly under people posting their latest weekly mix.

I don't know, just an idea. I know some people like Woscar (just came to mind) have monthly shows that a lot of us like to listen to and enjoy, but for the most part all these weekly mixes people post just bury all the mix sets.

This sounds good.

Thanks!

A good rule to counter with the weekly mixes threads is to have people make a single thread and simply update it instead of starting a new thread for every mix. Most posters who do this sort of thing only use the forum as a sort of promotion, anyways and don't really contribute anything else. Of course, the forum should and must be open to anyone who wants to post their mixes, but this way makes stuff less annoying to those of us who do actively contribute and want to use the forum to receive constructive criticism.

Just my $0.02

I can't make new forums or sub-forums, only Swamper can do that. It's been suggested to him many times in the past that TA could benefit from having a specific radio station sub-forum, and it may well happen in the future, but for now I'm just looking at keeping this section clean and sorted, while possibly making it a bit more useful. I'll bring it up with him again though

I'm not sure much can be done about that. It's a busy forum, and people are welcome to post their mixes as often as they like. That's always going to result in some threads getting pushed down on the page, or even back to the second page, unless it's getting bumped all the time with posts.

It's a good idea, but I'm not sure how well it would actually stop the burying of threads. I mean, a bumped thread on the first page is still a thread on the first page, right? There will still be just as many, just as often. And it's not that often we have multiple threads from the same person all on the front page at once (System-J has 3 right now, damn it! )

Posted by Lews on Nov-21-2009 00:09:

Yeah that would just result in the same threads being super bumped lol. I thought about that, but that's why I prefer a separate forum for weekly shows. Most of the people who post them don't actually do shit on the forum except post their thing weekly.

I don't suppose we could have a "common" mix forum for them, and then a more exclusive mix forum for the people who actually contribute a lot and would like some feedback on their stuff. I guess the problem is how does one try to get into the exclusive forum. Maybe set up some system where people had to ask a moderator first? And if they were just posting their weekly mixes or whatever a moderator could move them to the regular forum?

I don't know, just random ideas. It's irritating if you post a mix and then want to get some feedback on it and it's on the second page after a day. Most people don't go in deep looking for mixes, and I know that personally I feel like a douche if I just keep bumping my mix =/

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not sure it would be a good idea to have 'exclusive' type forums like that. TA is already harsh enough on noobs as it is, so no need to make it even harder for them

The thing is, the more someone contributes to the site (not just here with mixes/reviews etc, but in MD and COR as well), the more likely their mixes will be checked out by other users. Put something in, get something back.

Getting them to contribute isn't easy though

Posted by Lews on Nov-21-2009 01:58:

I know, I know. That would just make us look even more aristocratic haha.

It can just get annoying with all the people who really aren't members of the community making it hard for people in the community to get their stuff checked out.

I understand your reasoning though

HOLY SHIT

Posted by DJSoulstone on Nov-21-2009 02:48:

One sticky for stream promotion and one sticky for those other guys. And if still posts of that stuff come up, then just delete without warning.

Simple and effective.

Posted by Sushipunk on Nov-22-2009 04:56:

Ok, the sticky for radio show owners/scouters has been sorted

I'm waiting to hear back from Swamper about the possibility of have a sub-forum here in DJ Promo specifically for people to post their upcoming radio shows/streams. If yes, woot! If no, then I'll make a sticky thread for them too.

There are quite a few stickies up there now. Are you guys happy to have them all there, or are some useless/never used?

Not not make a thread?
