Google are taking over the world!

so, obviously google dominates the intrawebz, and have now (at least attempted) to revolutionize the way people communicate with google-wave, and now they've recently started making their own phones (OS, and soon hardware)...

and i just saw this now: they're creating their own comp OS set to 'rival microsoft and apple'...

http://www.theage.com.au/technology...tml?autostart=1

it's interesting because they're looking to essentially redesign the way computers work, not just create a new OS...

whether or not it works out, you gotta give google props for attempting to push the boundaries on how standard technology works, rather than just updating old systems like apple and windows....

I just figured out how to use Google Reader, and I don't think I'm ever going to visit another website again in my life. Except TA, of course.

Though I sometimes worry about how much power Google has, as long as they keep providing awesome free services and being benevolent rulers I'm happy.

It's an interesting idea, but you'd kind of be fucked if you took your computer somewhere without an internet connection.

Also, it could be quite limiting for users in countries like Australia, that have ISP bandwidth caps.

So that's cool and all, but since when is hard drive space for OS and base apps really an issue? The last time I was concerned with how much HD space windows took up was back in like 1993.

Posted by echosystm on Nov-23-2009 04:17:

This is just cloud computing. It's premature and won't take off, but it is a good proof of concept and will plant the seed of things to come.

Lately Google seem to be developing a lot of things that no one really has a need for. I doubt Wave, Android or the new programming language they are designing will be successful. They all have neat features and are great products, but no one really needs them.

There are a number of advantages to having your OS stored online. For one thing, your software is always up to date. Secondly, it's a bit hard for hackers to compromise your OS when you don't have it on your computer. There are quite a few other things which I'm sure someone like gehzhumteufel could explain better than I.

No one really needs Twatter, Fagbook or any of that other rubbish either, but look at them.

Yeah, but what void in the market does Android fill? 9/10 hipster wankers are going to buy an iPhone. The remaining 0.8/10 are going to be business users that want a Windows OS. All you're left with is a tiny slice of the market, consisting predominantly of geeks who are only buying it because its not an iPhone/Windows phone.

Same goes for Wave. I don't see anyone abandoning the Hotmail account they've had since they were 13 any time soon.

That brings us to Go... The last thing the world needs is another OO language lol, let alone another c-like one.

Lols. im about as likely to want to shift my OS to the net as I am to let sushipunk have me around for a slide show.

The net will never be as fast as a hard drive. Im not sure who google are trying to kid, or if their definition of an OS is completely different to mine.

Yeah, I understand. Being such a lazy cunt must be exhausting.

Well, to be fair to me im only a lazy cunt when it involves things that arent fun. Like avian slideshows.

remember the majority of the world still thinks that max hd space determines the speed of the computer. so there are plenty of stupid people to sell pennies for quarters to.

It has nothing to do with disk space, and if you think so, all aboard the fail boat.

Yep!

So, it is pretty obvious most of you guys are confused on the target market of this. Google has said from the beginning, that their target is for netbooks and ultra portables. Units that are pretty much just business units. So, you mostly just do email, web browsing, etc. As such, you don't need a desktop or some all powerful machine.

Also, the advantages of this, are that you don't need to carry flash drives or even technically speaking have an HDD at all. It can just be an appliance basically. This enables you to also, work from ANY machine in the world, and do all the same things. Google Docs, Gmail, etc.

This is such a load of shit. Android is not some stop-gap measure as you are implying. It is an alternative to, on the one hand a pretty shitty OS (Windows Mobile), and on the other hand a rape you in the ass OS (iPhone OS) that locks you into what they perceive as okay.

Secondly, I will try to find it, but there are a LARGE number of NEW smartphone users as a result of the introductory price of the Android-based phones being low.

Yeah, thats what I figured it would have to be. pretend computers. So when people talk about google taking over or making an OS theyre really just full of shit. Its little more than remote firmware really.

While I find netbooks to be too small for my own taste, they actually are perfect if you are just needing to push out a quick few emails and offload pics from a camera. So, they do have their good use.

You are correct though in that the OMGTHEY'RETAKINGOVER shit is unfounded. Wholly misinterpreted.

I pretty much agree with this:
i just found it interesting, and i think the idea itself has a lot of potential, even if the first model, or first 10 aren't exactly brilliant...

this is also very important
so many times people have asked me what a good computer is, and have been shocked when i havn't mentioned the HD since they believe that's where the speed comes from...
also lolworthy is people who think that computer speed has something to do with internet speed (connection)...

as a 'netbook' i think this would do pretty well anyway! of course the first 20 versions won't be able to take over desktops, but for people who don't use their comps for much, or who essentially do just use it for the net i think this is pretty cool!

in my experience a large amount of people are too stupid to use windows and even mac OS', and wind up clogging them with so many viruses/spyware and random shit that the comp runs 20x slower than it should for absolutely no reason... this would solve much of that problem...

Old news, this has been in the pipeline for a while now.
