Artists & managers

How do artists find managers. Or is it managers who find artists?

I'd say it goes both ways. Never hurts to give it a shot.

It's a mutual thing.....it depends on your needs really. I have always laughed at stupid little producers/djs who play local gigs that have a manager or bring somebody with them to a gig and make them out to be their roadie. It's pathetic and I personally do not deal with them. I hate, hate, HATE dealing with managers of artists (especially small name artists) - If I can't backdoor the manager 99 times out of 100 I will just stop. All managers do is run up costs for people like me.

On the other hand, people who are lucky enough to see the world through a box of records (a laptop these days, sadly) need a personal assistant to keep track of things. That is perfectly understandable and I'd wonder why somebody wouldn't have one if they were in this position because they should have one, if not two or three depending on the situation. Don't confuse manager with personal assistant though. They are completely different entities.

Seriously, all managers do is check emails and myspaces, sometimes do some A&R, and try to fish around for advance money for remixes along with getting their guy gigs and trying to promote them. Most of them are sorry a$$e$ who do their artist(s) more harm than good (and the artist unfortunately never realizes this) because of their apathy, stupidity, and greed.

but how does one get hired for a gig if he hasn't got a personal manager? And are there any ways to find managers if, suppose, i write some powerful tracks?

You first need the name and fame in order to be interesting for any relevant managers to consider you of course.

Second - a manager is only interesting at the point where managing yourself is taking valuable time from things that need to be done (a manager at this point will actually save you money and time ). OR if you're considering an active marketing plan around your persona to grow into the music industry an become a new rising star. It's possible to make your way into the music industry like that if you're able to collect the right people around you.

If you make the music it'll come to you man. Unless you're the most introverted person in your town and don't go out or know anybody who throws local events then you'll need some help, but if not, then you'll fine. You gotta get a local following first before you start thinking about travelling

That's not necessarily true. I only gig rarely, but they're pretty much all abroad .

Wasn't Japan above&beyond's first gig destination? And i hate local parties, people come not to hear you play live but for drinking and picking up chicks.

Fair enough, but I'll bet its through friendly contacts you developed over time and not a manager charging a promoter $ for you to play. (No pun intended) - I made a mistake by not see'ing where he was from before assuming the whole gigging thing.

But to the original poster....where you live it's not hard to find places to play to the best of my knowledge. Storyteller can probably tell you more about the approach you need to take. A lot depends on your goals, location, etc.

@storyteller: yea, since you got your gigs abroad, will you explain more closely how you've come up with that?

This isn't necessarily the norm but I'm just using the internet. If you dj and produce then I wouldn't focus on anything but your production. That's the key to being known. If you're just a dj or just a producer it's a lot more difficult and I haven't looked into it so I don't know what to say.

Me personally I'm just working hard day and night to finish my albums because I know when I release them they will do all the work of promoting for me.

I'm also going to WMC this year for networking/marketing purposes. I don't foresee a better avenue than that for anything in edm these days.
