Thinking of getting a new computer: thoughts?

I have an old AMD Athlon XP 2200+ desktop running at 1.80 GHz, with 2GB RAM, ~120GB of HDD space, and a 15in LCD screen. Ancient, I know. Have had the computer for ~7yrs and it got me through college and most of grad school. It is about time for me to upgrade to something more powerful as workin on photo and video edits is getting almost impossible. I plan on passing it off to my little nephews as they will probably be able to enjoy it at their age.

I was thinking of getting the new quad core 27'' iMac. I have been reading that there are a few problems with them, but I am guessing it is the minority experiencing issues. I have an Apple laptop that I love and have had a good experience with, so do to compatibility of running programs was thinking of getting an Apple desktop. Hence the new iMac. Was thinking of spec'ing it out as:


2.8 GHz i7 CPU
8GB DDR3 Ram (will buy memory upgrade myself from 3rd party)
1TB HD
ATI Radeon HD 4850 GPU


I was thinking of building my own desktop (PC or a Hackintosh) but when you include the price of a high quality IPS LED 27in monitor it seems like the Apple is the best way to go. The monitor itself would probably cost ~$1200-1300. With the educational discount it will run me ~$2100 which seems like a lot of money, but seems like a great bang for the buck. Especially since I will probably keep this computer for ~5yrs. What do you guys think? Wise move or no? I visited the local Apple store, and the computer is freakin amazing in person.

Any reason you recommend against the Hackintosh? I know it would probably cause more headaches that I would want to deal with, probably the reason I'm not that excited about building my own computer. I have been there and done that; to much drama getting all the correct drivers..etc.

I was told my someone that uses an Apple wireless keyboard that under typical use they get over 5-6 months use out of a set of batteries. That seems like a fair trade off. The iMac is fairly green as it is with the power management.

Black Friday had the Samsung LED 56" TV for 1599 - just sayin

sure if your brain damaged let's go buy a 1k+ monitor for no reason when a 400 doller monitor will suit you just as fine and not break your back.

go core i7 /end thread. you have the specs lined out already so I assume you know what your doing. handle it.

i have a HP Pavilion dv 1000.. it's about.. 5 yrs old? and sometimes it works slow OR overheats itself lol .. if i have like 6 things running it freezes on me. i don't have any viruses bc i always scan it & i defrag when it needs it. idk what i did wrong

i have an old ass dell that has screws falling out of it, but it still works perfectly, only had to replace the charger once

umm HPs are going to shit currently, and it comes to my attention that they are the same price as dells also

i always thought Toshiba or Acer was the top choice for laptops. Never had a Dell.

i wouldn't look at dell laptops imo.

my buddy went through so many horror stories with them. and dell's end-user retail side = not so great.

Toshiba is definitely good but they are more expensive, at least i think so

dont know about Acer but i do know that Asus, Lenovo beat Apple in US computer reliability rankings

you can get yourself a very good laptop with stable hardware less than $600 these days, online or at the store. In my opinion and experience, i wouldn't go for Dell or HP laptops. Toshibas and Acers are pretty good. If you can find yourself a Lenovo for a decent price, that's good too. People may diss Compaq computers, but I've bought at least a dozen Compaqs (desktop and laptop) in my lifetime, and have never had any type of hardware problems with them.

Seriously, you want security just go mac. I mean mac can do pretty much anything a PC can do but sleeker and nicer. I have an iphone and it can play movies. I don't know what the deal is with people who buy DVD/HDDVD/BluRay players. You have to go buy the disc, which is bigger than the iphone (that tells you how obsolete they are) and you have to manually insert it into the player. I'm not a manual laborer, I am an artist and I don't want to have to waste space on having a green-unfriendly post consumer waste Disc case plus the disc itself which I suspect isn't biodegradable and probably has carbs (I have a carbon footprint of 0 btw). I mean you get itunes and your iphone and you have your movies. Iphones do more for world peace and the environment than any ugly PC and obsolete technology. Al Gore has an Iphone and he won a nobel prize.

As someone else mentioned, you can't compare a TV vs. a computer monitor. I think that the Samsung runs 1920 x 1080 pixels whereas the 27'' Apple iMac screen runs 2560 by 1440 pixels. That is a difference of 1,612,800 pixels in favor of the Apple screen. So even though the Samsung is a 56'' the Apple with the 27'' will have 1,612,800 more pixels.

I need the screen realestate so that I can multi-task and run several apps at the same time. LG is the actual manufacturer of the IPS LED screen supposedly. Their 30" Widescreen HD LCD Computer Monitor runs about $1450. So a fair guess is that if the 27'' was sold by itself it would be in the $1200-1300 range.

Not sure if you were talking to me or not. However the complete iMac is quite a bargain when you consider the price of the high quality monitor by itself along with the i7 CPU. I wish the GPU was more up to date, but the ATI 4850 should suit my needs. Since I edit photos and videos, a $400 monitor really wouldn't cut it as I need something with more pixels than a 1920x1080. Cool thing with the iMac is that it is all together (monitor + computer).

My work gave me a Macbook Pro for free and it is a total piece of crap; it doesn't even have home and end keys, which I find absolutely moronic. Needless to say, I installed Windows on it because OSX is a pile of horseshit. You'll find the same, if you actually need to use your computer for real work at any point in time.

Regardless, those new iMacs are a very good deal considering the quality of the monitor. You can also obviously connect a decent keyboard to them, unlike Macbooks (kinda detracts from the point of it being a laptop in the first place). If I was in the market for a new PC, I would get one of those iMacs, replace the crappy default keyboard and put Windows on it.
