DanceTrippin.tv 132: Richie Hawtin vs. Marco Carola @ Amnesia Closing 2009

Yes, I know there are various other threads that this video could have been posted in, but this video really deserves a thread of its own.

Richie Hawtin vs. Marco Carola @ Amnesia Closing 2009

(sorry, no link to embed)

How I didn't make it to the Amnesia Closing Party when I was there in 2007 is beyond me. I had goosebumps almost the entire time watching this video.

I love the way the audio/video is recording in real time... these two make DJ'ing look SO easy: kill bass, 1-4, 1-4, 1-4, 1-4, bring back bass, sip champagne lol

This site is in the works to become the first full-time cable TV EDM channel in Europe with mostly vids like this one.
To be syndicated out of Amsterdam

[voice of dissent]

I can't stand the direction Carola went in - the guy used to manhandle three decks for hours on end, all business with a near unparalleled bag of tricks...now he's gone so soft that the bears in that commercial can sub him in if they ever run out of Charmin.

Watch the Slices special on Richie Hawtin if you haven't already. He talks with great enthusiasm about how in the 90s they started throwing parties in Detroit that were designed to be the antithesis of what was dominating the rave scene at the time. They didn't like what they were seeing - too much flash, not enough substance - so they reverted back to big, dark spaces, DJs that were lost in the shadows or that weren't even visible to the crowd, and huge stacks of sound.

What

the

fuck

happened.

Srsly...

Fuck the booth bunnies.

Fuck the party-in-the-booth.

and most of all...

This is what minimal sounds like, courtesy of someone who actually knows how to WORK IT.

Personally, I like to see my DJs breaking a sweat, and not because there are 40 other people surrounding them in the booth...

Of course the stock answer to all this is that it's easy to rip on guys like Hawtin and Carola because they're supposedly at the top of their game, but really - which game are they at the top of? Knowing both of their histories, I don't believe its their creative one.

[/voice of dissent]

Having said all that, dancetrippin.tv is cool beans - some fun parties to watch, fo' sho'. Still waiting for some taped sets from some artists with real cojones, like maybe say...Rob Hood or Ben Sims.

you bring up a good point, that sounds like a techno era long forgotten (at least by these two DJ's)

Although I think you were commenting in a general sense about their styles, it is worth pointing out that in this video they are playing "back 2 back" which would require a lot of compromise (especially creatively)...

I think you are totally missing the point of the Amnesia terrace. I mean have you been to one of these parties? There is nothing like it!!!!

LOL @ 1.53

Hey, if half the DJs out there had Melvin's passion, the dance music world would be a considerably more interesting place.
