Big Ears REVIEW: Deadmau5 @ The Guvernment Dec. 26

Well since none has been started, I'll go for it.

I got there late, in a sense, because it was 10:45 and the lineups were massive. It didn't matter which door you were heading for as each appeared as nasty as the next one. My peoples and I were in the guestlist lineup for about 45 minutes before we got in. Then to make matters worst, the coatcheck line was about 30 minutes long too. I wish I had a drink in my hand to pass the time better!

The place, as an understatement, was packed like I haven't seen it in quite a while. Of course Mark Oliver was blasting out the tunes in the way we expect of him. Just to get from here to there was a feat onto itself. I never realized the Mau5 would attract this kind of crowd. Inch by inch I managed to get right up to the front to join the rest of the sardines. When Mau5 was spinning up the beats the front crowd had a bad habit of swaying side to side. It was like being caught in some kind of undulating ocean current, and never mind the constant screaming from the group that surrounded me.

I've never heard Joel perform before and I was very impressed. Sure he playing some of the stuff you normally hear on the radio, but he also blasted out some very hard beats that really lent to a high energy feel. The crowd was outta control and everyone was glued to the dance floor to the very end of his set. He did an encore 5 minute set to please his starving fans. I didn't know most of the tune names, but I'm sure there are a few TA's who will step up and be heard.

After his set, I spent the rest of the time grooving in The Gallery to Deko-ze's wicked style. I got some good footage of him too (20 minutes) that I'll post separately. I never tire of his energetic style!

all i have to say is:

uhhhhhhhh paco... can you give me something to bang my head on??

track of Mau5s set for me!

as i was on my way downtown, one of the girls in the car spoke with her brother who was already in line around 9:40pm and said it was already about a 30 minute line. i got there around 10:30 and saw the line went all the way down queens quay. LOL wow

the club filled in very early. i looked around at 11pm and the place was already half full. mark played a very nice opening set. joel went on around 1am and had the entire club on the tip of their toes for the entire set. it was intense.

its great to see joel has this kind of pull. i would love to see him with a boxing day residency with ink every year.

ps. that rage against the machine track is

nice review francis really like that pole you got hooked to your cam!.. i agree guv was a sea of madness! spent maybe half an hour on the main floor and I couldn't take much more of it. I took a vid just to show how crazy it was just trying to keep still. My night started off by skipping like an hr's worth of time and just got in b4 12. Got to hear some amanda astra in the acid lounge. I still had my jacket on and decided just to chill cause I knew coat check line would take a longer then I was waiting in line(about 40 min). guv needs to re-do their coat check and ticket booth.. I left around 2 ish ... tune of the night goes to the rage against the machine - killin in the name of remix? wow wtf...and omg

i luv the guv...

oh.. only spent 30 bucks with parking.. maybe 6 bucks in gas!

cheap night

Perhaps many listened to both yours and Shaya's warning to come EARY EARY EARY !!! That they did.

That thing was a last minute ghetto piece of hardware I made, and it extends too. I have a "real" one but it's larger and perhaps a pain to hold on to during the night. If it wasn't for my ghetto extension the videoing would have been much different.

I ended up going to this party at the last minute after getting smashed at boxing day house party that ended early and had nothing left to do but hit the guv and continue the mayhem. So i arrived at around 2:00am and surprisingly, despite reports i heard from people earlier, the lineup was not too bad. It did take about 30 minutes to get in tho, so that was surprising to me considering Saturday night's party had only one headliner. So upon entry i was disapointed to see that the place was a definite sardine can. I enjoyed Deadmau5's set, but had to take breaks to get out of that main room for 15 mins here and there. All in all it was fun but i wish there was more room to dance and to move freely!!

Upon arrival and entry I was really worried about how this night was going to go. I headed straight for Gallery, and didn't leave once. I didn't catch a single second of Mau5, which didn't bother me because I've seen him before.. Gallery was crazy! got to see the junkies and Deko-Ze both for the second night in a row and they were incredible!

I love seeing Deko-Ze in Gallery, he was the first I ever saw there, and always kills it

I passed through main room one more time on my way through to coat check, but after what was just going on in the almost pitch black gallery, I had no interest in stopping to soak anything in.

It ended up being a WAY better night than I expected!!

<3 Gallery!

Evil1

is it just me or has deadmau5 really started to attract a groupie and noob type of crowd at his parties? i'm finding these crowds to be quite annoying and preventing people who actually follow the music and are into it, from getting it...it's the whole, "David Guetta is the best cuz he remixed an Akon song" bs

hope it was good for those of you who went tho

thank god for noobs... without them the scene would die.

+1
many people forget that they were once a noob in the party scene. we all gotta start somewhere.

Awesome to hear that he put on a good show and attracted some new-comers into the scene!

I decided to skip the Guv set since I really don't like being pushed around for hours on end in that main-room, but I was REALLY impressed with Joel's energy and interaction back when I saw him at Wasaga's Dome, and I imagine with the vibe at Guv, he probably went above and beyond.

Here's to awesome DJs keeping our scene alive!

*cheers*

Curious to know about this as well, I was expecting to see him using a xone 4d in the pics..

Does anyone know the track that was played near the end of the junkies? set in the gallery. It was a female vocalist and the vocals were something like " it's just an ordinary day" and " I heard you say"

the main room was stupid busy so I was in the gallery all night. I left to go see mau5 but got to the main room right as he finished. Went right back to the gallery after that. Don't regret missing mau5 at all.

dennis ferrer - hey hey

DF's Attention vocal mix is what I have but it sounded slightly different

Just Starting??????

New people to the scene are needed or else you would have a bunch of 50 year old men sitting around bitching at how loud the music is. I don't mind new people....I dislike trend followers who like hip hop this month but next month like electro and then the week after like trance because that's what their friends are liking now.

Got there around 1:15ish and line up was crazy. There was no way I was gonna stand there and get in waaaay after last call. Besides the way it seems, I wouldn't even be able to get to the bar since this place was packed.

Also about the new croud thing that was mentioned, I need to say that the reason why this new croud was even there is thanks to z-103.5. You dont see this croud on other nights or with most other dj's. So let's not get too excited that the new croud is there for the music. It's more like they're there cuz deadmou5 had some z-103 advertising lol

Ended up at lol lounge on college, preeeeeeeetty nice and lots of alcohol.

first off, it is spelled "crowd".
secondly, i dont think it matters where the noobs come from. i was a noob that stemmed from z103 when i first discovered the scene. all that matters is we expose new people to our music and hope they like it and continue to enjoy it. thats what will keep our scene alive.

Posted by Shaya007 on Dec-29-2009 02:28:

Noobs are shrinking in size, Let's see what 2010 brings on to the tables

exactly.

this doesn't excuse ignorant behaviour. We were all noobs once...we weren't all assholes.

i did not go...I do like Joel's production work quite a bit but am not a fan of his sets. Could be the crowd...but I've heard him twice and both times he was up and down. When he's up its phenomenal, when he's down....i just don't like it. I will continue to support him by buying his music but the only way I will see him play is at events with other headliners on the bill.

I agree with the up and down thing but looks like he's getting a hang of it finally..this was the better set out of the past 3 times I've seen him.
