-- End of a Year, End of a Decade
End of a Year, End of a Decade
So, another year and another decade are just about to become history. I usually like to look back and see how I did over the past year in terms of musical accomplishments, and now I find myself looking back at the last decade as well. This past year I had a few successes, but overall it seems a pretty big flop in many ways. I had several songs released, but my overall song output was much lower than it's been since I started producing. That was largely due to having a 2-year old son demanding most of my free time and being too tired afterward to get very much focused music production time in - don't get me wrong, though, I'm not complaining - making music doesn't come close to the joy that my son brings me! But, I haven't finished a track in about 4 months.
Looking back over the decade, I just think wow - things have really changed! I went from being a 100% live performer finishing up grad school to one of those guys with a (gasp!) career and family, built a home studio, started recording/producing obsessively, and played very few live gigs. It's pretty amazing to look back and see how much things have changed in ten years, both for me personally and in the music industry, not to mention how fast it seems to have gone by.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things early next year with no real goals other than to get back on track (no pun intended). As far as the next decade goes, I'll probably be putting a lot of time and effort into nurturing my son's musical talents and hopefully getting him involved in music production, piano/bass/guitar/drum/whatever lessons, etc.
So, how about you guys? How was your year/decade? Any plans for the next year/decade?
this year didnt give me much. i gave much though, hope to get something back some day. im not sure ive finished a single track all year. its fucking scary how fast times goes right now, i cant really follow. i must put my shit together and start focus if i wanna go somewhere from here on. the whole decade is a pretty crazy ride, musical wise. from djeing to producing to starting my own label, though without any success at all lol. i dont care, i love every minute ive spent on music, in all forms and im learning alot. worst period musical wise where around late 2007, early 2008 when i got lost in hardware synths and computer issues. finally got rid of everything crap and starting to get back on creativity using macbook and software only. next up trying to put together an album and a liveact.
sounds nice cyro. state of mind is the most important thing imo, and that can be hard time come by sometimes, even if you aren't busy. congrats on your healthy son too. i have a few friends with a boy that age, one of them loves to dance to house/techno already. pretty cute. and kudos on getting him started early. i was around my mother's beautiful singing/guitar playing/songwriting from the momemt i was born, so that really played a part for me later. wish they would have given me piano lessons or something like that before elementary school. luckily i went to that elementary school for 5 years and had the same music teacher the whole time, so there was lots of music and singing then.
as far as my plans, i read you guys mentioning finishing songs. for me that has been difficult because i didn't want to "release" anything that wasn't up to par with what the top jocks were playing, which is essentially a lot of the time song of my favorite music.
it took some charisma and courage, but i switched DAWs and that helped me out a lot, i'm very confident making tunes now because i have a formula that i can use and depend on to be consistent. essentially that is what i have been after. now that i don't have to worry about if i can produce, it's time to start releasing.
so for plans, going to move to europe and try to take the next step
I started to produce late 2007 and all I can say about 2009 is that the latter half of the year ive really got to grips with things. That in turn , and with more studying , I personally think ive got alot better and have much more understanding of things. All that is holding me back now is the need for a new computer and spare time.
Good thread.
This year I finally got the studio (loose term!) in a decent state focussed on the right kit. I also signed my first releases. Besides the signings, this year I'm getting a lot more happy with my productions - but like so many others I don't think I'll ever be truly happy with them.
My long suffering music mentor and I finally got our arses into gear and got our collaboration up and running and have signed our first track.
Decade - in order:-
Got my degree
Got a decent job
Got the right girlfriend
Got a mortgage
Got a son
Got an Access Virus
Got a Nord Rack
All very serious
A decade is way too much time to comment on musical progress. Although it is note worthy that this was my first full decade as a "trance producer".
In the past year, I've completed only two songs. Both remixes. I also wasted a lot of time playing World of Warcraft through Sept and Oct, then before that wasted a lot of time playing Unreal Tournament III over the Summer.
Then around late Oct I realized that gaming was taking up way too much of my time so I decided to mostly give it up, especially online gaming, to concentrate on music. Since then I almost compelted a track, but abandoned it 1/3 through. I also am very near completing my Alesis Andromeda sound bank. Very exciting.

keyboard - baby "umm" keyboard - baby "umm" no your right tho cryo the greatest thing one can have in this world is a child.
i've been doing music but other people's music and I am going to try and work on my portfolio so I don't have to work for hacks much longer.
this decade lol i have been making music since 1998, and i still havent sent 1 tune to a record label, but this year has been good for me ive been inspired by 3 good friends of mine who i met last year who are learning to make trance, they have probly helped me more than i have them, ive learned how get off me arse an finish something, with there help ive become a talented dj too and we start a residency once a fortnight in blackburn next year, ive had a tune played on radio 2 and in a few clubs also, peace out happy new year
2009 was a detonator for me. It opened my eyes on many things. I have been through hard times but can't complain after all, as it's changed me dramatically. And now with the almost 6 month old Myla, I feel a lot more confident!
The last decade... what can I say. We've seen both sides of it now, the good one and the bad one. can't complain either. Had my ups and downs just like anyone else.
Musically, though, I think it's about time to wake up and show what I really can do. Until then, I was making music without any goal and expectations, with past frustration into my head. Until recently I was probably listening to the wrong music and it wasn't inspiring me the right way...
So will this year be the year we make contact? We'll see. But I'll do everything I can so we can get there.
In short, 2009 sucked.
This year has been rather poor for me personally, but musically it has been fantastic.
Here's hoping 2010 will be a better year!
Pretty good year musically for me, after YEARS of trying to sound decent, I'm actually getting somewhere. Now all I have to do is stop using that damn piano sounds in my music lol. Also my DJ'ing has vastly improved since last year when I started. It just takes me a long time to find the right tracks I that go together, and fit a set that I like to play.
I would have liked to do more than three completed tracks this year, but I was so busy these last few months I couldn't get one out.
Its been a good last 2 years for me with my music as I have achieved a lot of the things I set out to do. However in less than 10 weeks I'm going to be in the same boat as you Cryo as I will be the father of a boy! I'm looking forward to it but making music is going to be quite different as I will have to mix mostly using headphones at least until my son gets older. I've just started using Logic so my goals for this next year are to really try this platform out and see if I want to make the permanent switch from Cubase.
Achieved my goals for 2009, hope to do the same for 2010, even though its going to be tough.
I feel the same as most of you, especially Laurent about opening my eyes in 2009, and so much happened in this decade that I couldn't begin fit it in to this thread - including living in four countries, two of those moves being transatlantic, going back to school twice, and both of them changing my life for the better, changing careers at least 4 times (although somewhat related), and making great money at times and going nearly broke at others.
The only constant throughout that entire time has been my GF, which I'm more greatful for than can be ever be put in to words.
This year especially was one of the most tumultuous - from doing the scary thing of leaving the highest profile job I've ever had, to starting a business, to so nearly getting financially screwed by someone we trusted so heavily, to winning against them in the final days of this year, it just didn't stop, but there were more positives than negatives.
But importantly to me personally, something happened in terms of my productions in 2009 that just changed everything. I went from productions that just didn't cut it, to having that "Aha" moment where they now sound like releases, and I have control over my output in terms of sound and quality.
I've got a feeling that 2010 and coming decade is going to be great...and if the last few days is anything to go by, also a lot of fun
been an average year... got my first couple tracks signed, though the future of them is a bit ambiguous...
i guess dealing with the label that signed my tracks, and a couple of other labels while looking for remixes etc really opened my eyes a lot to the other side of music: the industry (and i wasn't even dealing with big labels, so i can't pretend to have some deep insight or anything)...
the whole thing really screwed me around for the last couple months, and i havn't really been doing too much, apart from a few remixes that didn't get picked up because they didn't suit the sound of the labels...
i guess i'm hoping that this year i'll be able to 1: define my sound, and 2: define what i'm making music for: pure pleasure (don't try getting anything released etc), or just make my stuff more commercial, so it fits into genres which labels appreciate...
overall it was a good year though, i'm starting to not completely suck, so that's nice
