2010.01.16 [SF] Fairmont [Border Community/Canada] @ 1015

Fairmont Border Community/Canada
Canadian techno-meister Jake Fairley donned his Fairmont alter-ego once again after several years of abstinence to join Border Community and deliver up the lovable club monster Gazebo, which has since taken on quite a life of its own. But with his Coloured In Memory album we saw the artist really step out from the shadows, with an intimate and personal collection of idiosyncratic techno hits (single Flight Of The Albatross is a perfect example) nestled amongst a warm and cosy home-listening bundle, which Jake has translated into a suitably lush and krauty vocal analogue-electronica show for the live forum. This will be Fairmont's first return to San Francisco in over 5 years! Not to be missed!

BEATPORTAL: Fairmont Plays Killer Live Set at Cielo
http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item...e-set-at-cielo/

Around six years ago Jake Fairley aka Fairmont was part of the rock outfit, Uncut in Toronto.
Surprisingly, and quite uniquely apart from many of his indie rock contemporaries, he was concurrently working on his own solo electronic music project.
Jake was in his home studio with drum machines and analogue gear, making beats of his own kindan amazing hybrid somewhere between rock and techno.
His shoegazer-style vocals would at the time blend well with electronic drum machine and synthesizer sounds, while his groundbreaking sound would impress Torontos techno elite.
During the late 90s and early 2000s Jake was able to make friends with other Toronto techno producers before many of themsuch as Mike Shannon, Jeff Milligan, Pan/Tone, Jeremy P. Caulfield, Adam Marhsall, and Fairley, himselfeventually moved to Berlin.
Fast forward to Friday night in New York City at Cielo nightclubFairmont is playing the mainstream club circuit and he performs a wonderful but too-short set.
Fairmont opened his set with one of his own hits called Fade and Saturate from his delightful 2007 album, Coloured in Memory.
Fairmont also played I Need Medicine with his own live and dark vocals, and his own 2005 minimal techno recognizable hit, Gazebo.
His set was danceable and melodic, hypnotic and well done.
Hes been touring the world from his base in Berlin for a while, and this summer hes playing plenty of North American dates and visiting his hometown of Toronto.
As a wonderful surrounding to Fairmonts live set, Cielo boasted an amazing sound system and plenty of great psychedelic lights in every shade of the rainbow.
Surrounding the floor were tables with bottle service and an older crowd that in some cases, unfortunately, did not appear to be as enthusiastic about the music.
What was really remarkable about Fairmonts live set was that it was not a computer that he was using, but instead several drum machines and a microphone for his occasionally lively sung vocals.
More vocals would have been great but he was focused on the percussive emphasis for his club set.
He used an MPC-1000, an all-in one drum machine with both a sequencer and sampler, which was Roger Linns old hip hop machine of choice
Using the Dave Smith Evolver to make his sounds instead of Ableton Live on a laptop like most performers today do, he then programmed and triggered the sounds using the MPC.
Fairmont used quite a unique set up, which highlighted his artistic ability.
His most recent, fourth full-length album is brimming with greatness.
Originally marrying techno and rock sounds, Fairmonts music has evolved further with his latest album and his set includes surf/rock/electro, drugged out, trance-inducing highs, spacey melodic synths and his signaturevery personal, heartfelt lyrics.
Hes remarkably been able to round out the various genres nicely for the dance floor.
Fairmont is definitely worth checking out live.

Description
Growing up under the influence of the skateboard and indie rock scene in his hometown of Toronto, the path to techno stardom was not always an obvious one for Canada's Fairmont (aka Jake Fairly). Although he first began dabbling with the electronic side back in 1995, a lack of like-minded friends meant that techno was to remain a private passion until 1999, when local techno don Jeremy Caulfield first encountered one of his live sets. Caulfield was impressed by Jake's physical live show, and his unique take on techno borne out of that initial isolation, and promptly signed him up for the first release on his fledgling Dumb-Unit label. During this early part of his career, as well as releasing tracks under his birth name Jake Fairley also tried on a number of different project aliases, of which Fairmont was just one - allbeit one which spawned a whole album release. In 2002 the highly-respected Cologne label Traum released Fairmont's 'Paper Stars', a lovable, personal album of bedroom electronica which brought a touch of romance and subtlety to the techno format. The project seduced a cult following (including none other than the Pet Shop Boys, who opened their 'Back to Mine' compilation with a Fairmont number), but the project was then placed temporarily on hold to focus on other projects.
2005 saw Jake hook up with emergent UK label Border Community to release the 'Gazebo' / 'Gazelle' double-header and embracing his sensitive side once more, but this time with a slightly stronger kick and an even stronger sense of melody. 'Gazebo' soon took on a life of its own, evolving into the sort of club monster that causes the crowd to fly into raptures at the merest hint of the opening refrain. The once elusive Fairmont softer side had been transformed into a serious club concern, and the everlush melodies were now imbued with a new dancefloor sensibility as Jake took the once clubshy Fairmont live show on the road for the first time.
But now the time has come for the artist to step out from behind the shadow of the massive club hit, witthe release of 'Coloured In Memory' on Border Community, the second album under the Fairmont moniker (and Jake's fourth longplayer overall). The 2007 update of the Fairmont sound showcases the true depth and variety of Jake Fairley's talent, uniting his trademark driving analogue machine-funk with intimate, hypnotic vocals, elasticated rhythms, woozy, warm interludes and drugged out highs, with the iconic dongs of discordance and stretchy synths of remarkable new single 'Flight of the Albatross' acting as a fitting precursor of things to come. From the demented-surf-rock-electro of 'Bikini Atoll' and the wobbly Velvets heroin-drone-trance of 'I Need Medicine' to the mellow folk-hop of 'Calm Before The Storm' and the spacey apocalyptic low end of John Carpenter-esque 'Sedatives for the Sentimental', it is perhaps the less obviously classifiable tracks and the more deviant moments of 'Coloured in Memory' where the album truly shines and the broad scope of Jake's vision is revealed. The Fairmont live show meanwhile is currently on the road across Europe and beyond...

edit: 3 hour dj set -- http://rizo.ws/mixes/fairmont_at_pl..._2008-06-20.mp3
I posted this on the Incognito already:
Rizo, I'll download that 3 hour set. Thank you!
I already have that vessel set, and imo, it's more mellow than his usual style (from other darker/harder sets I've heard from him).
