Toronto Island airport expansion set for takeoff
Air traffic to grow up to 77 per cent by the end of 2010

The increase in flights puts the port authority on a collision course with island and waterfront residents concerned about noise and pollution, as well as Councillor Adam Vaughan, a vocal critic.
good. they should dump some landfill around the island to extend the runways to allow heavier/faster aircraft to land at the CIA.
I also support a multilane bridge/tunnel from the mainland to the airport to increase airport usage and do away with the damn ferry service.
And we all know that if Adam Vaughn is opposed to something it is usually a good thing for the city!!!!
up yours, Islander yuppies!
at least they will be angry at the airport more than the clubs for once lol

im all for this.
They should continue what they started in the 60s and tear down the remaining shacks on the island.
They should also continue with the leslie st spit and perhaps consider it for a condo free entertainment district.

the leslie spit in my toronto would be
A boardwalk with boardwalk cafes and restaurants. REAL cafes not hoity toity BS. A mix of clubs and bars but not too concentrated in one area. A casino. And a fairgrounds that can be used for everything from carnivals to ethnic festivals to creamfields!
AND NO CONDOS. And anyone even thinking about living in one nearby would have to sign a special clause acknowledging the existance of the entertainment district and absolving their rights to whine about it.
i was actually thinking of a reverse idea once.. rather than turning the islands into an entertainment/tourist attraction, instead zone it all for social housing and move all the projects and slum onto the island. Enclose the airport with a security perimeter. All the additional freed up land on Toronto proper can then be rezoned for development. Since the ferries stop running after a certain time you could contain the spread of ghettoness. Essentially it'd be a slum island, but at the same time you'd be able to keep all the "undesirables" in isolation and contain crime ala. "Escape from New York".
I live closer to the island airport then any of the islanders do.
I'm literally 150 metres from the east end of the runway. the street cars create way more noise pollution down here then the planes do. there's virtually no extra traffic on queens quay for the airport. everyone takes bathurst between the ferry dock and lakeshore. The planes are fucking cool as shit to watch. I really don't get why anyone in the harbor front would complain about the airport.

That'll show them to stop complaining about noise at Skybar & the Docks!
