Exclamation The Hardware (fx) Thread

If anyone has any decent pieces of hardware that have shone in their dance music please name them and name how.

I'll go first.

Bought an Orban 642b parametric eq from Ebay a few months back, gave it a roll at my mates and it is awesome, even on his uber shite setup, super-clinical, very clean and generally very good bang for buck.

If anyone has had any experience with SSL clone compressors i'd like to hear about them

hardware FX? Just uad UAD or Waves. :P

Using a hardware FX unit is way too much of a PIA. I'm willing to accept an un-noticeable degradation in sound quality by using my UAD plugs.

Do we have to own it? =]

If not I think it would be safe to say Mr. Culture Vulture.

I don't own it myself but we used Briscasti Reverbs (m7) on many film projects.

Nothing sounds as good as them on strings. Nothing. Ever has. Should do too at $1700 per channel. We did use lexicon 970's but these have been bumped to second choice.

In terms of preamps, we used the Never 1081r on most projects for the crucial close mic lines and the desk for the rest.

They do what they're meant to - clean gain, clear sound and very versatile.

the manly Dual mono DI gets used for nearly every project along with the avalon design U5 as per the talents taste.

There's also a giant SPL passive eq but it never gets used

$1700 a channel!!!

Its good to know if I ever hit the lotto I have such an easy way to lose it all..

no you dont have to own it, just stuff you've used

Tom, heard a lot about the M7's, the Neve looks sweet too, just missed out on a pair of Neve eq/pre's

I use 2x a MPX 1, a DP4 and the D-Two. Maby, in the the future, I`m buy the PCM91 or the new one of Lexicon, I think it`s was the PCM92.

Thats a waste of money. Maby you can try to sell it and buy you self a soft compressor.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Jan-08-2010 21:53:

it cost me like 100USD or something so i might just as well keep it. might get use of it someday. i dont really need anything new either atm.

Posted by Ry Thomas on Jan-08-2010 22:13:

if it sounds too dirty, book it in to black lion audio in the US, they'll do some awesome tricks with it

Anybody here have any experience with the Focusrite ISA 430 mkII (Producer Pack/channel strip)? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, primarily regarding its versatility as a do-it-all channel strip. That's long been on my wishlist if I was ever to upgrade from my JoeMeek OneQ.

Yep, I've used one a while back. Lot of versatility becuase of the routing options and it's a great solid state preamp.

The only think I dislike is that it's quite cold sounding - with vocals which are warm in tone and timbre (gospel, lower octaves) it just seemed to suck some of the life out of them.

Only a minor gripe and overall it's a really great swiss army pre (if you get what I mean). It;s also quite good value for all that it does, even though it's not cheap.

@palm - yes, crack theat bugger open and run your drums through it. Do it with phat drums that purposfully need taming to bring them down while crunching them up.

@ry - the M7 is just phenominal. If money were no object I'd only use them. They've now brought out a remote and new impulse patches - they just sound so damn good and real.

Yeah, I get exactly what you mean and that's why I'm so interested in it. I sorta think of my OneQ as a poor-man's 430 because it's also very versatile in terms of front-panel controls, but not so much in terms of I/Os. If I was ever to buy one, it would be second-hand because of the price, but that means I probably wouldn't have a chance to try before I buy, so I really appreciate the info!

A follow-up question - have you had a chance to compare the ISA 430 to the ISA One? The reason I'm asking is that I've heard the One and was impressed by it, so I'm assuming that the 430 sounds similar???
