The Piknic Wishlist Thread

Let's have a little fun here.

This is not an omg omg bring him thread like people do with Bal En Blanc every year. The only reason I chose Piknic is because they seem to be the promotion most likely to take chances and partying in the sun > everything else. They will book who they will book, but no one said that we can't get dreamy a bit.

Rules:
-Try and pick people that have not played the event yet.

-Keep it clean, and respect peoples choices. Not everyone listens to the same stuff, and that is ok.

-If you can post a set post a set!

-Post why! Tell us why you want to see this person more than anyone else.

-Let's get the Sven thing out of the way, keep dreaming Marcus, not going to happen.

-Trance will be ridiculed, so do not bother.
****

I'll start with one and add more later.

My first choice: Raresh.

I got to see him once on a euro trip. He looks like a baby face, but the man child has a crazy selection in his bag that would make most veterans jealous. He will play anything from techno to classic house and just has a 2nd sense when it comes to structuring a set tailor made for whatever crowd he is playing to.

I've listened to many of his sets, and they just are always different. Skilled way beyond his age imo.

Here is a more recent one:

Raresh & Praslea Back 2 Back Live @ Cabaret, Bucharest - 24-12-2009 by R_co

I could be mistaken, but i do believe that he has not made a North American appearance yet, so all the better. Piknic and Mutek do debuts quite good.

now go!

From those who I've heard in UK in the past 4 months ...

1. Luciano
Somewhat glad that the Igloofest gig didn't work out, because this guy is SUMMER. Saw him tag teaming with Loco Dice - absolutely mental.

2. Loco Dice
Saw him twice, great sets each time.

3. Jamie Jones / Seth Troxler
Although I was disappointed in their sets, I'd like to see them again (based on their sets floating online).

4. Sve... Yousef!
Played after Sven on NYE and DESTROYED the London crowd. Excellent mixing and track selection.

5. Danny

Let's dream! Aphex Twin!

keep em coming.

Luciano already played Piknic in 2004 though.

raresh or any of the other arpiar guys would be perfect for piknic. bring them ! Lauhaus or julien chaptal would also be good.

Arpiar (Rhadoo, Pedro & Raresh) Live @ Midi Club, Cluj - 10-04-2009 by R_co

Posted by Adam420 on Jan-09-2010 00:02:

I wanna hear some GOOD dubstep at Piknic, so a few I'd be interested in seeing are:

-2562/A Made Up Sound

2562 - FACT MIX (320kbps) by Surefire

-Martyn

-Scuba

SCB (Scuba) - Mnml Ssgs MIX37 by Surefire

-Ramadanman
-Appleblim

Ruffage Sessions - Appleblim b2b Pangaea b2b Ramadanman (29-May-08) by Ritalux

I've really taken a liking to Dubstep over the past few months (though keep in mind, that dubstep is a pretty ill-defined genre, and my preferences lie with a very specific sound aesthetic, I guess it would be the techno-crossover kinda dubstep). I would like to hear a live set. It's just pure groove. I don't know, I don't really have much of an explanation, but I would be really excited if one of these guys were to play here. They also don't only play dubstep, but often mix it with techno/house records as well. I think it'd be interesting.

I'll try to think of some house/techno DJs that I'd like to see, and would probably come up with a much better explanation (some have already been named by Jay). Don't forget Pedro and Rhadoo as well, I'm sure those two are amazing. Ideally I'd like to see all three together, but that's pretty unrealistic (though who knows, the same could've been said about Ricardo vs. Zip in MTL).

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-09-2010 00:08:

lets get those explanations, and maybe a few sets!!

Another one:

Omar S (will post a set later).

Deep N Detroit. Not the best DJ technically, but damn does he play some fine stuff. Soul n tech like it should be done. His fabric CD. was quite good as well.

I hate the use the term "underground", but if you want to buy his tracks the only way to do so is to email him for the wav or record. Deeeeeeeep stuff.

I listen to this record waking up every single day. It just starts the day off on the right foot.

He is known to be paranoid and tends to put stickers on top of his vinyls so no one can tell what he is playing. Don't expect a tracklist of stuff that just came out with this guy, buddy will play jams that our parents used to fist pump to!

I totally Agree on Raresh, actually mentionned him sometime in the past, and that set just proves it.

My Selections:

Tensnake

There's no hiding it, im a tensnake beeyotch. Although he's not really reknown for his mixing, from what i've heard from this german lad he has a nice potential and should exploit it a bit more. His funky style reaching from smooth nudisco to old classic funk to deep house and sometimes surprises us with tech house, he'd bring a new flavor to piknik that actually will(would) surprise a lot of people and gain a lot of new enthusiasts. I admit this is not your peak hour/main event dj, but to start off the afternoon under the hot sun, this guy will be able to put some groove into the people. I find this set to be a great example:

Set: Tensnake RA 187 - Resident Advisor Podcast // 12-28-2009

Tensnake RA 187 - Resident Advisor Podcast // 12-28-2009 by Tensnake

The Revenge (Graeme Clark)

The Most eclectic dj/producer at the moment (Tensnake being the most eclectic period), from 70's sample to early 80's funk to ghost busters to "im not sure its hip hop or", i honestly never know what to expect with this one except sweetness. Multiple proof exists that this man knows how to mix something for people to dance if they know how to.I feel this is a very "moody" dj, and those are the best, "pragmatic dj's" who knows their stuff on the tip of their fingers and could quickly and easily adapt to a crowd. The guy incarnates "fusion of old and new". I think a few sets are required to appreciate the range of expertise from this dude:

The Revenge - Get Warm Mix

The Revenge : Get Warm Mix by The Revenge

The Revenge - House is Here (War is Over) - Mix

The Revenge : House Is Here (War Is Over) Mix by The Revenge

The Revenge - Beats in Space Mix

The Revenge : Beats In Space Mix by The Revenge

The Timewriter WITH Terry Lee Brown Jr.

Practically everyone that knows me knows that im a bitch to the Timewriter. His productions are tight, crisp, uncomparable. I rarely call people geniuses, this man is. For mixing, his track selection are most the time great but his mixing skills and sometimes incoherent or fade track selection wouldnt make him be on my list of "dj's for piknik" if it wasn't for his eternal partner, TLB. Terry can very well pull off tight mixes without the timekeeper next to him, but when they combine, its like a japanese anime robot. This is one of the best fist pumping duo out there (hard to beat Rhadoo & Raresh though). As much as Timewriter can get everything out of your sound system in his productions, Terry can get it out with his mixes. Even with diva tracks, im sure people would enjoy it proper.

Honorable Mention - Manuel Tur

As i didnt find any sets on soundcloud (which i find great and rather share mixes with it for the streaming feature), but that cat pulled some epic stuff too and it would be an absolute pleasure to have him take part of the piknik experience on a beautiful summer day. Mainly focusing on deep tech and dropping a few house bombs,i dont think its possible for him to have a "down moment" in his sets, even with low-mid tempo tracks. Thats defo a peak hour/main event dj.

Would have mentionned Moodymann too, but his mixing is absolutely dreadful but epic track selections.

Does it show that i had nothing to do tonight .

Edit: Happy new year everyone

Julien Chaptal, Polder, Anton Pieete, Bart Skills...basically anyone from the Dutch techno scene...

Paul Ritch...

And bring back Joris Voorn!

Posted by Dj Nacht on Jan-09-2010 01:38:

Ben Sims and Mark Broom
These guys at Piknic would rip apart the dancefloor. Whens the last time they came to Montreal? Aria 1942?

Seriously Piknic is full of shit untill they bring atleast one real techno act to Montreal.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it

Oh and now that I think of it, add Surgeon to this pie.

Excellent choices man.

I was gonna come back and mention Tensnake and TLBG and The Timewriter but now I don't need to

A duo (I think) that comes to mind that I would LOVE to have at Piknic is Sandwell District. Their RA podcast was immense, and their set at the Labyrinth festival in Japan last year was absolutely mindblowing according to the guys over at mnml ssgs. All you techno heads hre should listen to this if you haven't already:

RA.177-Sandwell District (19.10.2009) by eoiny

Here's another SD set:

Sandwell District Live @ Planet Rose, Nijmegen - 14-02-2009 by R_co

I've always wondered what would be the best kind of setting to host guys who play techno like this here in Montreal. It's quite raw, stripped down, and I think the venue should reflect that, for the full effect anyway. And this goes not just for SD. Guys like Luke Slater (Planetary Assault Systems), Peter Van Hoesen, Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock, for example. Would love to hear techno like that @ Piknic!

Most of these guys are only obscure to you because they have never played here before. In europe a lot of these guys have played huge festivals and their bookings are busy.

This thread would be no fun if we only picked acts we've seen 100000 times before would it?
