Jack Moss - Decade [Ambient/Dubstep/Psy/Prog]

I've been listening to a lot of '00s music recently for Best Of The Decade considerations, and decided to put together a mix of personal favourites from the decade that I haven't had chance to play in my other sets. This is by no means a definitive selection of the '00s, it's just the sounds that have tickled my ears the most. I recommend hunting down my Spaced and Heart Of Darkness sets for plenty of tracks that would be here if I hadn't used them already.

The mix is the longest I've shared yet on TA, but I appreciate that two hour sets are difficult to properly digest and concentrate on, so I've split it into two halves, which can be listened to seperately or together. First half is much more chill and jumps through the genres, second half starts off on a psychedelic tip and then gets into a straightforward prog setting.

When you move both files into the winamp playlist, you see that they are both named Part 2.

The real Part I is titled "Decade [Part 2]" (using brackets)

and

the real Part 2 is titled "Decade (Part 2)" (using parentheses)

So, I retitled my Part I "Decade (Part 1)" using parentheses.

That's very annoying, because I specifically tried to avoid that. That's a result of splitting the mix into two parts, and I'm sorry I messed up on that. It should only be an issue if you have both files enqueued or on an MP3 player, and unless it's a big problem for people I'd rather not upload the file again.

Well, here goes with a quick review. I've been listening to both sets repeatedly since you posted it...

Part 1: Thought it was great how all the songs blended into each other so well.. there was a really impressive flow to everything. Loved how it started off, nice and atmospheric. Highlights would be the Burial track, the Chilling Moments ambient mix, the Gai Barone song, and Nightwalker. Just lots of beautiful, standout music on it. My only complaint with it was that "Warsaw" (while a great track) seemed a bit too heavy and upfront, and really stood out in sharp contrast to the rest of the set.

Part 2: Well, I wasn't feeling the first few tracks too much (am I correct in guessing that this is "Prog-psy"? I'm not too familiar with that genre), but as soon as Fretwell's track kicked in, I was hooked. The tension never let up, all the way to the end, and I found it interesting how tracks from 2009 flowed so well with songs from 2000-1. Another mix, with such amazing tracks on it that I have a hard time picking a favorite, so I will just say every song from Fretwell to the Baguio track kicked ass. Lots of favorites from back in the day on here, all mixed so well. I've always loved the Quivver mix Sacred Cycles, and I think that's where the set peaks in its emotional intensity.

Any other comments? Well, it would have been nice if you could have uploaded the whole mix as one, instead of splitting it into 2 parts.

Thanks for the honest review, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm not sure if I'd call the opening of Part 2 prog-psy. It's definitely psy, but those tracks are about 20bpm too slow to mix with prog psy. I'd call them psy-chill because they come from downtempo albums, but they definitely aren't relaxing. I don't know what to call them, really, I just like them.

As for uploading the mix as a whole as well... you can just cue both parts and it'll sound just like the full thing, so I didn't see much point. I'm sorry about the fucked up titles of each file which make it a bit more fiddly to tell which is Part 1 but it's only a small problem.

I'd also like to point out that the Sacred Cycles track which arrives around 46:00 is originally from the Gabriel-era Genesis song titled "The Fountain of Salmacis"

The Bob Lazar quote is part of the Asura track, not something I added in. I'm also well aware of the Genesis quote in Sacred Cycles. I was actually slightly iffy about including Sacred Cycles, because the original is from 1994, but Quivver only really used the Genesis sample in his remix so it's practically a new track.

Part one I didn't find particularly fulfilling. The structure seemed to oscillate back and forth between beatless ambient and percussive tracks. Listening yesterday, I was sure that you'd done this intentionally but after another listen today I'm not sure. Irrespective, I found it a bit distracting, though most of the individual tracks were well selected. The mixing was smooth.

Part two was far more satisfying. I had to drop my car in for service this morning and then walk through quite a gritty part of town to catch the train home, and this mix suited the journey perfectly, like I was in a film clip or something. The mixing was quite creative, the flow subtle but deliberate and the track selection was tops as usual. I too agree that you did a great job of blending new and old. This mix had a bit of a similar feel to Future Fairytales for me. You seem to really like 'twinkly' melodies, and so do I when someone puts them in front of me in such an effective manner.

The first part wasn't really structured but designed to flow, if that is possible. Sort of a path-of-least-resistance style of programming, which did lead to oscillations between beats and ambience. It works for me, but I can understand if it doesn't for you.

The second part I was actually more apprehensive about sharing. It's a much more straightforward mix but because I played the slower psy at the beginning I'd only left myself about 55 minutes to play a prog set, and it's quite difficult to do a satisfying prog set in that time period without it feeling rushed or too abrupt or without chopping down the tunes to fit them in. Especially since I was playing several tracks that would be close to people's hearts.

Glad you enjoyed that part, anyway, and I appreciate the honest and thoughtful feedback. I've never thought about "twinkly melodies" as something I look for, but perhaps I do.
