EQ vs. Velocity chaining

I don't want to say the bad word.....but....which do you guys prefer for different types of things?

I normally use velocity triggering for things like are quick attacks like the bass drum and percs, and EQ chaining for trying to harmonic the sounds of difficult things like pads and another instruments harmonics/overtones etc. in the mix.

Velocity usually refers to the MIDI velocity of a note... is this what you're using as a trigger? Usually it's the actual audio gain.

Personally I pretty much stick to gain triggers. For stuff like EQ, the changes usually aren't frequent and so it's easier for me to just use automation. I'm not even aware of any VST plugins that let you chain to other aspects. Although it might be cool if you could chain to, say, a bitcrusher or a delay plugin.

I think what Stephen is talking about is the sidechain trigger being either an EQ or a velocity source.

So with an EQ trigger (or "key" is actually the correct name) the sidechain is triggered by the detection of a givem frequency ans with velocuty is it triggered by a relationship to the speed of the transient (and the faster the more it is etc.).

To answer you question, I haven't found a direct way in Logic (with the stock plugs) to do anything other than gain sensing. I could do a specific eq on a dedicated send for the sidechain trigger I suppose and route it that way but it just starts getting too messy if I do that for several tracks.

And anyway, My sidechain trigger is usually a copy of my main kick (to be coherant) or a pitched shorter up version for a tighter trigger.
