Do we have any local trance DJs?

So like...do any of our local DJs play trance? If so...do any of them have a somewhat regular radio time slot? Whether it be on Tech WREK or somewhere else? Or even better...do any of them play somewhere on weekends like opening up for someone else? Any bedroom DJs here who play trance?

I used to be the trance buyer for Satellite Records. I pretty much used to be the only Hard Trance DJ in Atlanta and I am not ashamed of it. I remember when fidget and bassline were actually called hardstyle - then before that hard progressive trance - then before that simply hard trance. The first time I saw someone play fidget I was actually a little pissed because I thought it was this new thing - its not! It is actually a _cheesier_ version of hard trance. But for some reason "trance" is a bad word so anything that has had "trance" in the name has simply been rebranded.

The only trance I have bought recently is more on the techy side. Its probably been over a year since I bought anything that was straight up trance or hard trance. But the only reason for that is there simply is no market for it here. Occasionally I'll get the oppurtunity to play some out, but it has to be in the right setting. The last time for me was at the Wildfyre warehouse probably a year ago - and it was fun!

I was actually thinking playing some next time I play at The Shelter (assuming there is a next time). I know Manikan played a lot of stuff that sounded like hard trance to me - but I doubt he calls it that. LOL I'd like to see what would happen if I busted out the heavy hitters from back in the day...

Yeah, this whole "new" fidget thing is hilarious to me.

I have no idea what fidget even means. Does it fall under the category of farty "rippy" hipster electro?

That's kinda funny... I was listening to a track the other day and commented that it sounded as tough it was being mixed with a fart noise machine or something.

Haha, so fidget is the farty hipster electro stuff? Never knew that either.

I guess that's the only real way you could dance to it. Maybe the fidgeting is trying to dance while still remaining stationary enough so the amount of pictures you show up in is slightly higher.

funny story.... there was a time when being a trance dj in North Carolina was a bad thing. My first big demo was entitled "the music charlotte hates, trance"

It looks like Atlanta is currently lacking on it right now. One of the big problems with being a trance dj nowadays is that all of the headliners have it in their contract to close so you have to be extremely versatile and willing to play a warmup house and progressive set at slower BPM or dont get booked.

Its not that promoters dont want to book local trance talent, its that there is no market for it unless its something multi room multi genre like MJ's party last year.

My first demo in Atlanta was called "This is Not Hip-Hop." As an aside (and to feel good about myself), I made that demo for an SERAVES party where everyone sent in anonymous tapes and judges picked who played. I ended up getting the 1am - 3am headlining slot in the main room for my very first booking. It was hard trance in Jan '99 I believe.

I agree 95%. Its not a 100% because I remember in maybe '02 Oakenfold played at 1150 and I closed for him. That was also back when the clubs could stay open later so I played from 2 - 4. Oakenfold played from 12 - 2 and you know he isn't going to play for more than 2 hrs. I wasn't on the flyer so the people in the crowd didn't even know that I was playing. Its kinda odd, because he clearly finished his set and I let him do his posing and everything before I proceeded to beat the crowd the fvck down with some real banging hard trance. I kept the dance floor packed until the lights came on and even played an encore - none of which would have happenned if the people knew they were listening to a local.

A similar situation happenned again at 1150 with Christopher Lawrence - except that time I didn't know I was playing until I was asked to go home and get my records because he was only contracted to play 2 hrs. This was also back around that same time period when clubs would stay open till 4 or so.

I think it has more to do with Atlanta closing times then the headliners having to close. They want to play the prime slot and now there is no room for another slot after prime time.

Either way, your point is still valid.

Well, it depends on the setting. Trance would work as a decent opening set for the rapture.

There's actually a lot of trance that would work well in an opening set. Most of it would probably be from the 90's though.

Thanks for the kind words George! Yeah I'm not exactly Atlanta but not really too far away (Greenville, SC). Trance(hard trance) is really my first love but in the past few years I've started playing a lot of epic/trance-esque dubstep and dnb out with my 4x4 stuff. And of course I have love for progressive and techy stuff. Kind of a bi-polar sound I have going on now....
I'll be playing Horrible Children's 2 year anniversary down there on March 13. I will definitely be dropping a lot of tough trance. Would be awesome to meet some of the ATL ta crowd!

Otherwise, not sure I've heard trancey dubstep. I have a John B CD somewhere with trance and drum and bass mixed that is aight. Now I'm curious.

I'm certainly not as trance-tastic as I used to be when I lived in the midwest, but I'm still into and was playing strictly trance for at least the final hour or so of my solo nights at Venus De Milo here in Savannah. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one DJ'ing trance here these days.

Recently I've gotten pretty bored with house and prog after digging up all my old DJ mixes from an old desktop that I hadn't used in years. At one point in time when I was in Madison, WI, I was a pretty prolific "mixtape" recorder, since we had a Saturday night dance mix show on a major FM radio station up there. I totalled it all up, and I've produced SIXTY-FIVE hours worth of mixes in my career, and a bulk of that was done pre-2004, when I moved to Savannah. As far as openers go, yeah. You do kind of have to program your set to warm up for a headline DJ, and that limits you a great deal as far as what you play. I opened for Marco V in Minneapolis, and played mostly prog house and some lower tempo (130ish) trancey stuff, but did play Capetown's Pitstop as my last track (pitched down to 132...). There was another DJ between me and Marco though, so it worked out ok.

At least from what I observed in the midwest, I was one of only a handful that played both prog house and trance. There was a VERY deep divide between DJ's that played one genre or the other. I'm not at all familiar with what's up in the ATL, so I don't know if that's the case up there or not.

Can you give me a list of some tracks you play Henry or some tracks that you consider hard trance?
