Need some input for a 'DJ Contest' on TA....
...the winner would have a dj gig at a 2-day festival. That's all I can say right now
I'll post this in DJ booth too but I need some input from within here. It'll be limited mainly to the Trance genre and I'm thinking to limit sets to 1 hour but I need additional criteria to help make it interesting.
Perhaps:
-Limited only to tracks from the previous...3 years?
-Must include at least 1 track produced by a TA?
Thoughts?
interesting idea.
remember that 246 radio contest? in the later stages i believe they required that the dj spin his own production, i think thats a neat idea.
you should clearly give restrictions in terms of mp3 quality(ie 192 only via sendspace, megaupload etc) will make your life easier , naming of files, clear genre restrictions
maybe post full judging criteria (ie is this mix ripped from charts? or featuring more underground producers ) etc. marks for originality and overall flow...

Originally posted by Swamper ...maybe another requirement is that they've actually played gigs at clubs before. Nothing against bedroom DJs but this wouldn't be a suitable place for a first gig, lol.
That would significantly increase some people's chances
.
I'd love to enter if progressive is considered trancy enough. Oh well, I play trancier music than I produce anyways.

Originally posted by Swamper I said the suggested limit on tracks not older than 3 years so that people don't go out grabbing cookie-cutter 'hits'. I can remove the time restriction.
Sounds like a really cool idea.
I'd say no limits on the age of tracks, but having a TA production in it would be cool

Originally posted by Acton Well, inevitably that action would. But at the end of the day, the winner will be playing at a festival, representing Tranceaddict. Would you be 100% comfortable sticking someone behind the decks, who has zero live experience? There is a lot to DJ'ing besides being able to mix records, as I'm sure you can appreciate. Allow me to say this again..
The problem with these sorts of things is one could re-do a set a million times and get it perfect (for submission) but would have difficulty doing the same thing uninterrupted live.
Criteria for judging would be the usual... track selection/programming, mixing, originality, etc. In the years I was a partner with WEMF, a 3-day electronic music festival - I handled the 'New Talent' DJ stage and I got a shitload of CDs mailed to me with mixes from all over (DnB, House, Trance, Techno, Breaks, etc.) and I had to pick the best ones and structure their time slots according to what style worked with what.
Now, whether I put the vote up to TAs, at the beginning (when all submissions are coming in) or at the end (after I've gone through them and picked out what I consider to be the best) is still undecided. Above all else, if I did go in that direction, I wouldn't want it to turn into a popularity contest for votes but rather to have the music speak for itself.
