i dont think they sell this mag in my country, but i really wanna see this video , as i have been a fan of his work for quite some time now.

He made a pretty bold statement in the first few minutes.

He made a double tracked bassline panned L&R, he said it sounds great in stereo but rubbish in mono as it was phasing. He said thats ok though cos no one listens to mono anyway

They usually end up on youtube

shots fired at people who take the easy route and mix in mono.

Yeah, I really don't think that many club systems that I've played on are mono, but I've never really panned from one side to the other to check either, its just never sounded that way to me. Maybe its more common in the states or something.

Is it an in-depth 'In the studio with...' where he really explains stuff or one of those where they just talk for about 20-30 minutes, usually about the latest project.
If it's in-depth it might be interesting to pick this issue up in the store.

as far as I know most club system run mono to the subs. I do all my kicks in mono for exactly this reason.

almost every club I know does dual mono. If you are djing and it sounds like stereo, it is because of your monitors - duhh

Whats dual mono ?

Mono = Single channel. There is only one speaker.

Dual Mono = Two Speakers (situated close enough to each other) outputting exactly the same audio. When you flick the 'mono' switch in your DAW, technically it is dual mono because both your monitors (or both the speakers in your headphones) are outputting exactly the same signal. And since the speakers are close enough to you, you don't hear any difference because of the time taken by the sound to reach you from the two speakers.

So whats the difference between playing mono on 2 speakers and playing dual mono on the same speakers ?

If there is more than one speaker, it is no longer 'true' mono. Mono on two speakers = dual mono.

Stereo means the output from the two speakers is different, signal out of monitor/speaker A will not cancel out the phase-inverted signal out of monitor/speaker B. Other things remaining the same (i.e., no panning, etc.), the difference is in the phase, i.e., the two signals even though they are sonically the same, are reaching your ears at different times (milliseconds apart), giving you the perception of 'space' and 'stereo width'.

Okey, so i tested my last track in mono, it sounds horrible, then i exported it as dual mono and the track sounds totally fucked up, the lead is much more present, but like the kick is coming out of the left speaker and stuff.

Woah dude... it seems I fucked up my definitions. Please ignore my posts; I am really sorry for posting crap.

EDIT: So it turns out that I was right about what 'dual mono' meant. The following passage is from Wikipedia:

quote:
Panning can also be used in an audio mixer to reduce or reverse the stereo width of a stereo signal. For instance, the left and right channels of a stereo source can be panned 'straight up', that is sent equally to both the left output and the right output of the mixer, creating a dual mono signal.

...which brings me to a question: Your host has both 'mono' and 'dual mono' export options? Which host are you using?

Wavelab has that.

The only thing I can think of is that Wavelab is probably splitting the left channel and right channel into two separate files. If I am wrong, can someone please tell what exactly a dual-mono audio file looks like? Is it the same as a two-channel audio file with exactly the same content on both channels? What is the point of such an arrangement?
