Knee jerk reaction to Ped deaths coming? Councillor wants 10 kph less speed limits
Councillor Bill Saundercook is going to be on CP24 at 12:30. He is renewing his wacky idea of LOWERING ALL SPEED LIMITS IN TORONTO by 10 Km/h and using the pedestrian deaths in the past week as his excuse.
just imagine.. major roads with 30 km/h speed limit. Side roads at 20 km/h. WOW!
God forbid we ever blame a pedestrian for anything! Jwalking and yapping on a cell phone while crossing the street? Surely lowering the speed limit will solve that!
Toronto... what a joke

I mean fuck, if you hate it that much, move to a nice hardcore conservative city like Dallas. I'm sure the gun-toting, god loving, drunken rednecks with their ultra strict policies on anything that sounds like electronic dance music coming out of a club after 2am will sit just perfectly with you. Oh, btw, other than the 70mph speed limit on the Dallas North Tollway, & 60mph on other freeways, when I was there the average speed limits I saw were 30mph (48km/h) on major arterial roads, and 20mph (32km/h) on most side streets. |

BTW The Ear,
your post comes off to me as someone who agrees with me but cant bear the thought of actually agreeing with me so you go off on a tangent to disguise that fact.

In Russia car drives you and car is pedestrian!
They friggin lowered the speeds over here in residential streets to 40kmh!!! WTF
There's even talks to go ahead with 30kmh!!!
Like wtf, no one drives at those speeds, its just a money making scam.

| Originally posted by The Ear The real point is that there's a duality that exists in every city, so it doesn't matter where you go, you're going to have to deal with it. |

| Also, if you want to get down to the root of the problem, perhaps you should be bitching about the ridiculously low voter turnout in the demographic that you represent, as most policies are coming from the 50+ demographic as this is the one that: 1)Votes most consistently with the highest turnout; 2)Has the most money and therefore ability to sway politicians through campaign contribrutions and bribes; and 3)Will take the time to write a letter/email to bitch & whine about almost getting hit by a car while they were illegally crossing a street. |

| So perhaps, instead of painting the entire city with a brush weilded by a single councillor every time one of them opens their aging mouths to spew forth a policy that you disagree with, you should start getting constructive and organizing/mobilizing more of the key demographic which you represent. I for one won't let a friend get away with not paying attention to & voting on local political matters. |
I love how instead of looking into taking away licenses from people who are clearly too old to drive, they are making everyone lives harder!
This is also a one sided view, you are assuming the drivers are at fault. What about the people how were struck while on the phone or were not crossing at the intersection.
People need to be more attentive when driving and walking. lowering the speed limit will not stop that problem
A car going at 30km/hr instead of 40km/hr will still kill a pedestrian that has their hoodie up, ipods blasting and steps out into the middle of the street without bothering to look both ways first.
Instead of getting knee-jerk reactionary and dropping speed limits, why not consider
- Stricter enforcing of jwalking laws, especially in heavy traffic areas?
- Doing analysis of high-impact areas to determine if longer times are needed at the intersections,
- See if more pedestrian crossing is needed in an area where it may be a long walk to the next intersection.
Or, I don't know - MP3 players and hoodies illegal.
I've been hit (thankfully nothing broke, just a severely bruised foot) by a car before because I was a space-case and walked across to a TTC island with my hoodie up and my iPod on. My friends asked why I didn't go after the driver, and I was just thinking "Uhh, it was my own fault?"
Do you guys think this may have something to do with the cell phone ban? The couple of times that I've had to answer my phone because my bluetooth was dead, I noticed that it takes a hell of a lot more attention and effort to hide the cell phone than to just talk into it. Now you have to look around for cops and make sure you don't get caught. Such a stupid ban.

aren't there studies out that show people pay more attention because of high speeds than low ones anyway?

Funny.
Yesterday alone, I had a girl start racing onto the street to catch her streetcar right in front of me when I was making a right onto Queens Quay from Spadina. It wasnt even a right turn on a red, my light was green.
Then no more than a few hours later, some old man was walking across University just north of Bloor, and instead of staying in the middle of the road when he saw me coming, he decided, you know what, not only will i start crossing anyways, ill walk right into your lane and just stay there. Like, WTF?
All when it was dark out... these are casualties just waiting to happen. The speed limit has nothing to do with it.
