Yeah I think stuff from the era of Matt Darey's Liberation. That song is popular, but recognizable. There hasn't been so much new uplifting stuff quite like that for awhile, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

Just remember kids...everything is epic when you are on lots of drugs!

Posted by patticus on Apr-03-2001 22:47:

uplifting

Chicane - Saltwater will take on all comers any day.
Also underrated is Free Radical - Surreal (see Magik 6 / PVD's EM closer dec 2000, i think)

Posted by Special_K on Apr-04-2001 02:51:

This is sort of why I posted this. It seems like everyone has a diffrent opinion of epic Trance. I had a bit of an idead as I've been listing to trance for about 3 years and spinning it for the last one.

Whatever you think is probably good enough. Usually epic trance is the same thing as uplifting. My friends have a pretty good way of describing it: there is usually one 'nugget of goodness' that the whole song finally develops to near the end. Obviously this isn't a prefect definition, but hey Im lazy and thats all youll get from me. peace.

i think the title, "epic trance", speaks for itself. its a voyage brought to you, the listener, by the dj. it takes you through many different emotions, leaving you feeling high with the gorgeous stabbing brass synth arpeggios, or dark and moody, with the progressive tribal beats. its not just one genre of trance, but a mixture.

response to special k

i agree that epic trance is kind of subjective, but of course it has to be melodic. actually, in contrast to what special k said, i think a lot of the stuff posted up here has been pretty similar.. gouryella, lustral, chicane. they could all be played in the same set. i mean its not like someone's going to suggest sparc by futureshock or something. very instrumental, theme-based.. the reason why i got into trance in the first place. not really pop-y, like you could make a case of another chicane choon, don't give up (w/ bryan adams) or fragma
so there are parameters, i do believe.

a parting question.. do yall think nalin & kane - open your eyes could be considered?
its classic for sure.. but not in the stereotypical trance fashion...

Posted by djfred on Apr-04-2001 08:03:

armin - communication.... nuff said :P

Posted by Dwingo on Apr-05-2001 10:04:

But what's the conclusion, because you all got me a bit confused.

Is Epic trance a lighter form of uplifting trance (just stuff like Chicane/ATB), or is Epic trance similar to Uplifting trance ( reaching from Chicane to System F)?

this is in reply to infinity's question...

in my opinion, epic trance and uplifting trance are separated by a fine line only... i think the only differrence is the popularity of the track. you wouldnt call anything thats not played by the top dj's epic, b/c its just not the same as binary finary or gouryella. it can still be uplifting and not be epic, but pretty much all epic songs are uplifting. thats how i c it

Shame / Disagreement

yeah the mike koglin mix was the one i was talking about, even though the nalin & kane mix of everytime got more play.
that (i think) is epic trance epitomized. absolutely uplifting, it'll put a smile on anyone's face. i guess epic trance = uplifting trance, i just never liked using that word because it seemed like some bullshit term that someone made up . heh
but in response to dwingo, id say its that chicane stuff to system f... most of ferry's stuff, like cry, solstice for example is maybe borderline. because it can still be linked to music like signum's what ya got 4 me (which i dont think is epic at all)

but like i said before, if you say epic trance, saltwater immediately pops up in my mind.

i think a common quality they all have is a strings instrumental.. look back thru the stuff, tenshi, gouryella, lustral.. am i right?
gotta love the strings

Posted by Aviston on Apr-05-2001 19:42:

I have never thought that epic trance could be used to describe a genre. To me, each person's idea of epic trance is right for them. As for my own taste, I prefer uplifting and melodic trance, so what is epic for me certainly comes from those genres. I'd have to say Rank 1 - Airwave pretty much sums up my version of epic trance.

Re: Lustral - Everytime

I will for sure check that out!

One mix of that song that I am not to fond of is the Vocal mix, I think it ruins the song IMO.

Peace,

Hello! Epic trance?

You guys like commercial soft trance.

My view of epic is that it has to be uplifting and mind elevating...

Go to http://mp3fun.cjb.net to find out what tracks I consider are epic trance.

Dream trance does not mean epic trance!

I do however, like Armin's Communication but it was like played to death years ago!

I can pull out any of my favorite old tracks from 3 years ago and anyone will agree with me its epic..none of the soft boring stuff you guys listen to

try
Fiji - Atlantis vs Avatar (Lange Mix)

at least this track changes melody and isnt the same riff over and over 100 times!

if you like harder
The Generator - Where are you now

the stuff you guys like make me fall asleep! You guys need to get on napster and start listening to non commercial stuff

Hmmm, I really am getting tired of seeing posts like this one. When exactly did elitist snobism enter the trance scene?

I know I can speak for the rest of us when I say that we certainly bow down to your mastery of music. Perhaps one day, the powers that be will shine down upon us and give us the brilliance and wisdom that have earned you the title of trancemaster. Oh, by the way, note the sarcasm.

Posted by Tripsy on Apr-06-2001 17:25:

I'm quite partial to the following at the moment:

York - Farewell to the Moon (Original mix)
Major League - Wonder?(Vocal mix)
BT and PVD - Sunblind (ft. Jan Johnston)
Rank1 - Many Miles Too Soon

Posted by patticus on Apr-06-2001 20:17:

i dont like that too much either

respekt to Aviston.

you could make the argument that atlantis - fiji or the lange mix or whatever, and armin - communication, are just as repetitive (formulaic if you will) as lustral, gouryella, or anything else. its called trance, which is always repetitive to a certain point. and they're just as commercial. was communication not on one of ferry's trance nation albums? bbc's radio one also plays fiji all the time.
case in point

im not trying to start an argument here, i just dont think you can be discrepant between the songs klumsy named, and the ones already listed

Cloudwalking!!!!!! When has a non-vocal song title truly represented a song as well as this one!
