Stop the USA from invading your computer privacy

ok, here we go again. . .the new way the US is trying to crack down on illegal activities via the net. This one is 100 times worse than anything they have thought of so far. This is a total invasion of privacy. We are talking spyware to find of you own illegal mp3's, movies, software, or use the internet for anything illegal. You will get heavily fined if you tamper with or remove it, plus time in prison. If you dont use it, you get fined. There is so much more to it, I strongly advise reading about it here

and to all you arrogant TA's that say this doesnt effect you, think again. Who builds your computers? Where does the processor come from? What country / company makes your operating systems?

Bill S2048 needs a swift death

read more about it here(same link as above)

sign the petition

I hate to introduce another kill this USA proposed bill thread, but this one needs a good spanking as well. Call your congress man/woman, sign the petition, and tell your friends.

seriously, though. between the anti-rave bill and the RIAA with AG and this shit - what are they thinking?

this country is too restrictive. they should try making laws that benefit the ppl in this country.

I signed it. There's NO way the Gov't will win! Why? there's always ways around things. First of all, people can just buy generic parts and build their own PC. Installing the software that want is a cinch. If the Gov't wants MS to install "special" Spyware into Windows, people'll just flock over to Linux, which is easy and can be just as good as Windows, if not, better! File-sharing's no problem because people'll just start using services which are based outside of USA or use services like Direct Connect, which can't be shut down because the private hubs aren't known to people outside of the "inner-circle" of people who use it. And of course, if all else fails, back to good ol' FTP! THAT will NEVER be stopped!

THE END (for now)!!!

This will never work. Even if they did put spyware into computers, they wouldnt be able to enforce it. I mean, everyone I know who has a computer has mp3's, illegal progs and whatnot, and Im sure it's the same for the rest of us.

That's right, and programmes like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware will detect the Spyware and get it out of your PC. Lavasoft is based in Europe, where the "Policeware" can't be used. Many people use Ad-aware so, the "Policeware" won't affect them due to this. Plus, certain sites like www.astalavista.com and the www.box.sk hierarchy (sp?) (mods, if you want to take those sites out, you can) will tell you how to get rid of the spyware and never have it come back to ur PC.

Hmm...have you ever heard of 'illegal search & seizure' under the bill of rights in the US constitution? They are searching your things without enough suspicion to do so. There are many arguements for and against whether the gov't searching one's computer actually falls under this though. However since there is so much speculation over this being constitutional or not, it will be a long time before anything like this goes into effect.

On a second thought, the US gov't is extremely powerful and sometimes will start pulling shit like this whether it's constitutional or not so I don't know.

That's why my dad sometimes says "We have NO ammendments": Because the US gov't doesn't follow them, as well as numerous other laws which are out there to protect us. The gov't will do anything to spy on people and pry into their private lives. It's all money. They want to sell info about us and I think it's REALLY wrong and unconstitutional. Here's the problem: The gov't thinks that just because they make the BIG decisions in/for this country, they know more than anyone else in the country, and that's HIGHLY untrue! Look at my reaction to the "R.A.V.E." Bill that's trying to be put in place and you'll see that the gov't NEVER thinks about backdoors, ways around things, people finding their OWN way (s) in, etc. That's why I call them dumb. END OF STORY (for now)...

it says "all new computers"... if for some reason it gets passed, i'd suppose all the old computers will go up in price. and hey, we can always invent some new compression type, like mp313 or sumfn... i guess i'll have to go underground with all of my 40 gigs of mp3s... and i mean like really, under the ground.

What if NO ONE buys whole systems like ur mentioning anymore and they just start buying seperate parts STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN (and piece it all together), where they're made (and where "Policeware" doesn't/won't exist)? Then, there's NOTHING that can be done about it because everyone's getting it straight from the manufacturers, who make products thet way THEY want to, not the way a FOREIGN GOVERNMENT wants them to!

Ur first statement's reply: I guess not...
Ur second statement's reply: U have that right, as well as most of the rest of the world (no stupid laws like this!)!

Actually, it's not because it's NOT US who selects the president by vote- It's the ELECTORAL COLLEGE who makes that big choice. It sounds nuts but, that's where the millions of votes go- to the Electoral College of each party (Republican or Democrat). It's possible for the Popular Vote (people's vote) to be the opposite from the Electoral College's vote due to this stupid system that we have. Everyone hates it because the people who queue every year to vote are actually voting for a specific Electoral College, who, basically, is a second group who votes on the president. THAT vote is really the vote that counts. Isn't it nuts?

Posted by Munken on Jul-12-2002 19:29:

The world needs a revolution.... All these dumb fuck all the countries governments, seems to think we're there to help them and not the other way around.

That's why i don't want to vote... it doesn't matter who i vote for ether way he's gonna fuck me over. They don't care about the people, and they destroy all the benefits that our grand parents worked so hard to get.

All they care about is them self and how to get more money.

Posted by Matrix on Jul-13-2002 02:21:

Munken, first off, that apathetic attitude is what causes this problem in the first place. If everyone voted and wrote / emailed to their congresspersons, then the US would be a lot better. The true opinions of americans would be heard.

Second, as much as i dislike the private part leaders of my country(Dick and Bush ) they do not control the legislation that comes from our government. This is purely the result of Congress

Next, they do have ways to enforce it. Imagine trying to go to microsoft.com to get a critical update, only to find that your ip address has been logged (and you are an american), and it has been determined that your computer does not have this policeware installed. They call your isp and you can only wait for big brother to come knocking at your door.
Sure, you can avoid this by using a free proxy to mask your ip address (hopefully it is outside of the country), but they arent stupid (as we might like to believe). They will eventually block all known proxy services to prevent that, so it will only work for a short time. Now imagine this being used on the yahoo, google, ebay, and other high profile US websites.

The prison's are so full in the U.S. And if they are seriously gonna start arresting people... Just imagine, How many people have illegal stuff oin their computer including MP3's... I will just take a guess of in the U.S. .... .... .... 2 million people. (Theirs 47 million in the U.S according to last census) Imagine two million people going to over crowded prisons for 5 years? Thats a accident waiting to happen.

Im on dialup and lagging hard, so Im just gonna assume your talking about the cdbpta (whatever the fuck its called... formerly the SSSCA)

This one was introduced by Senator Hollings (D, SC). It would basically do this:

-Make owning a computer illegial unless it had government approved copy protection software on it

-Building a computer illegial unless you were licesnsed by the gov't to do so

-Writing ANY open source software (good bye, linux), or any software that didnt have gov't approved copy protection in it

And guess who Holling's major contributors are? Disney, the RIAA, and others I cant think of right now

I also recall that the RIAA tried to sneak a little something of their own into one of the US's new anti terrorism acts... it was a section called something like "prevention of cyber-terrorism" or some pathetic shit like that. Basically, it would LEGALLY give the RIAA access to hack into your computer and delete any mp3s, movies, programs, ANYTHING they felt like deleting, all in the name of protecting their copyright. Last I heard they caught that little section and got rid of it.

And dont ride on the faith that something this moronic would never be passed. Thats exactly what people said about the DMCA, but it passed anyways

What if you only use all high-profile sites that are overseas? Like Yahoo UK (I use that), E-bay Japan, etc...

What if you have OVERSEAS versions of LINUX? Those shouldn't be prohibited because their not from USA. Also, with Linux, there's no Critical Updates and if their were, you'd be getting it from a site that's outside of USA anyway...
