You should get a t-shirt that commemorates D-Day, just to remind them you are probably descended from the people who saved their ass in WWII. You gotta keep Frenchie in line with their high-fallootin' airs always tryin' to get one over on turistas.

Oh, and don't forget to change every entre' or side dish containing the word French to Freedom when you're ordering in their restaurants!

Bring cash, lots of cash. $15 a beer. $30 burgers.

Posted by Lews on Feb-12-2010 22:11:

Yeah, it's expensive. And don't expect to call home to America more than once a month. But well worth it.

I hope to spend a year or two studying abroad myself, probably at Oxford, but would love to do Paris as well

Posted by enydo on Feb-12-2010 22:13:

I'm next to positive I'll be studying for 10 weeks at Oxford this summer.

I think half of that is just spent traveling Europe though.

Posted by Dervish on Feb-12-2010 22:21:

But.. Oxford is in England... why would you wanna go there?

Are you honestly questioning, why he is spending time studying at Oxford?

*EDIT - Hopes that you will be studying at Oxford University and not some local school that's located in Oxford!

when in france, beware the arm pits of people.

I actually severely dislike a few English people I've known for many years, but it's fucking Oxford.

Posted by tachobg on Feb-12-2010 23:31:

It's pretty expensive. I got an internship offer the other day paying 700 euros/month .... turns out minimum wage is around 1300. So obviously, like people said, make sure the money situation is ok.

Go to the Saint Germain des Prs and go often. You'll escape the tourist madness and find yourself surrounded by real Parisian culture.

Also, a 2L bottle of Coca Cola costs 18 Euro on the Champs-Elyses

it's a big capital what do you expect?

try parking in new york ... certainly ain't cheap heck some places go as high as 35 dollars an hour if not more!

about the calling thing well depending on where how and all that if you have dsl access it's prety much standard now to have unlimited phone calls local(cellphones NOT included) and 50+ countries and there's skype and all that as well

you gotta be more specific with your questions

Yeah, if you're a moron who buys their food at Montmarte. I lived in Paris for three weeks when I was 16 and I managed fine. I stayed with a 21 year old who never kept any food in the house and had to buy and cook all my own meals. I can't recall if my parents lent/gave me any money, but I remember things being reasonably priced, both at restaurants and supermarkets, if you were sensible.

Paris is a brilliant city but I'd advise anyone going to learn French; the locals aren't helpful or appreciative towards those who don't.

and remember Paris does not represent the rest of France. People in capitals tend to be d*cks because of stress tourists etc.

What and where are you studying?

Saint Germain des Prs is so clich... It's only for pretentious Parisian twats (well, the most pretentious ones) and naive tourists looking for "a typical Parisian atmosphere" (as described in the reader's digest).

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Feb-13-2010 18:38:

i'm not studying nothing. I just wanted to ask all the questions from the google commercial.

Posted by d-miurge on Feb-13-2010 23:58:

I didn't read the whole thread.

So, here is a cool caf near le Louvre: Le fumoir (le Louvre is not the area where I'd go for a coffee in Paris).

Posted by igottaknow on Feb-14-2010 00:13:

The French didn't invent French Fries or French Salad Dressing. This much I know is true, the rest is for you to find out. Goodbye and good luck.
