Luger dies at Olympics :(

Terrible news to the start of the games

Luger Accident Link

I don't think padding would have helped, what a dumb places for those poles.

Sad

OMG!!

very shocking and terrible news. what a depressing start to the olympics

Posted by vendetta999 on Feb-12-2010 23:39:

why would you ever design a course with poles next to a place where someone is going 140+ km/h?

Obviously theres an element of danger when you're participating in the luge, but like you said....what a dumb place to have poles.

Posted by Jem_hadar on Feb-12-2010 23:41:

Damn, there goes the glory of Canada's next Olmypic hosting experience.

Posted by FunkyCrew on Feb-12-2010 23:45:

that is absolutely terrible, wow

Posted by gummybear on Feb-12-2010 23:50:

RIP

I don't even begin to guess how they will handle this tonight...

Posted by SWFT on Feb-13-2010 00:20:

well technically it was in practice round...so hopefully the olympics will shine and overlook this tragic event :S (for the meanwhile at least...try not to dampen the spirit too much)

In their defense, luge accidents don't usually involve the luger themselves flying out of the track. This was a first and I'm sure no one could have anticipated about that.

CTV just showed the footage of the accident, it was a hard impact.

Posted by jsibilin on Feb-13-2010 00:28:

omg, most horrific accident i have ever seen!!!!!!!

The rely on cbc news was better quality and really showed how immense the crash was. I really think the luge course should have a clear plastic tube to keep the athletes inside (that or a wall to deflect them down the course)

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Feb-13-2010 00:28:

RIP

It was a one in a million type accident. All sled tracks have metal poles along the track at some point that are not padded.

This was his second crash this week. Maybe the rules on who should be competing need to change. He was not a medal threat and not even in the Top 50 in the world.

Posted by nacarter on Feb-13-2010 00:38:

Before people get too indignant about the course design, the video shows that the luger probably died on impact with the wall BEFORE being slingshotted into the pole.

Deaths on bobsled/luge tracks aren't all that uncommon, the luge run in St Moritz which is considered easy by today's bobsled/luge standards has had DOZENS of deaths over it's 100 year history.

Tough way to start the Games though.

Sorry to hear this young man go. The young newcommers have less fear and push themselves beyond their limits to prove themselves, and unfortunately to their demise. He did look out of control on that last turn, and over-steered to get back down.

This is brutal but I think he should have had the chance to compete. There are a lot shittier ways to die then doing something you love and he was more then aware of the risks involved with his sport. Also remember Ross Rebagliati I don't think he was ranked in the top 50 when he took olympic gold in down hill snowboarding. All said this is a really shitty way for the Olympics to start, I feel bad for his friends n family who were probably really looking forward to watching him compete...

wow....speechless.

Posted by Spin Laden on Feb-13-2010 01:48:

yeah, I'm in Van right now and it's almost like having a good friend overdose at a party you've been looking forward to for a long time, it has casted a bit of a pall over the festivities.

Some heads will roll, there was lots of criticism about the difficulty of the track before the accident even. I believe the Vancouver Sun ran an article on that before the fatal crash

Posted by VDub on Feb-13-2010 01:56:

I just saw the video and there is no amount of padding that couldve been installed on that pole to protect him from that crash...

There should have been a vertical barrier from the wall to the awning...

It's the exact same thing that wouldve saved Jeff Krosnof and the track marshall at the '96 Molson Indy...

Truly a tragic event but the luge is an EXTREMELY dangerous sport...

RIP Nodar...

are you serious??? have you ever seen winter olympic games before???

Posted by mnemonic. on Feb-13-2010 05:38:

Unhappy

Wow, so I had only saw the headlines about this today, but the opening ceremonies really struck a nerve.

To know that Nodar was my age...it really hurts.

Really, why did he have to be taken today? Why could he have not had a chance? To make it to the olympic level requires so much training, hard work, dedication, commitment, courage and sacrifice, and he never got to show the world what he could achieve.

So many people die everyday, I don't why I feel such a connection to this one. Maybe the Olympics really do unify us on some kind of 'emotional' level, maybe it's just because he's my age. I don't know. But thinking about Nodar's death makes me feel so gutted.

My prayers and condolences tonight are with his family in mind. I hope that every athlete keeps him in mind over the next 16 days.

no offence. RIP guy, its sad.

but, why did he have to be taken away today?

um...i wanna fucking LOL as hard as i can but i dont wanna.

OOOOH WHYYYYYYYY

one question??? would you be so fucking melodramatic if it was...lets say Russian??? or Chinese???

Posted by mnemonic. on Feb-13-2010 06:35:

Probably. I really don't see what difference his culture makes. He's still human, the guy was still my age, and who knows what he could have achieved if he were still alive. Culture doesn't change the fact that I think this is a tragic loss of life.

I can't stop thinking about this comment. It never occured to me before but this seems so logical! A clear tube (like a waterslide) would be so much safer I think....wonder if they'll ever change the course.

I heard the announcer talking about the next few athletes that will be competing on that exact same course...must be traumatic to go down next knowing someone died on there....
