... unless you're Canadian or Swamper

just sayin

It's just an olympics where there's no new great story to tell about any american athletes. The stars who are there have already had their stories told and there's really nothing new to tell. Maybe Bode Miller if he wins anything considering his rep in the past and how he became a father, changed his habits, etcet cetc.

When there isn't a story to tell, the fallback is usually just highlighting some star womens figure skater. But the US really doesn't have one to highlight this year...don't think we are expected to get any type of medal in that event.

A good personal story drives our interest into the games and makes us think they are better. Psychology. But that's lacking this year.

No Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, or Nancy Kerrigan this year so there aren't really any household names to watch for.

Supposedly Vancouver has been unseasonably warm this year, so they're in a panic to get an army of snow machines working on maintaining enough snow for the games.

What's terrible is that even though these games are being held in our own time zone, we can't watch them live on TV. How stupid is that? Even during the weekend, everything is time-delayed by 3 hours.

Billy, the Winter Olympics are boring so far because most of the good sports haven't started their competitions yet. No mens' ice hockey, no hot Canadian womens Curling team, and no figure skating (your personal favorite). Personally, I'm waiting for Skeleton. There's nothing like flying down a tube 4" from the ice at 90 mph while facing forward.

you forgot the alpine skiing events! (mens, of course...though i enjoy the womens as well). I think some of them got postponed because of the snow. I can't wait though. Used to be a racer myself - - was never very good but I love the sport. Anyway, I'm Austrian, so whenever I would visit family as a kid everybody was huge on following the scene. Expecting big thangs out of Benny Raich, Walchoffer, and the rest of the guys this year.

it's too bad about the problems with snow this year. whistler, on average, gets tons more snow than any other North American ski area. (correct me if i'm wrong...just remember hearing that skiing there...and seeing it first hand)

Its dry, and with the death during trials kind of sets a dark tone.

Even the NBA stuff over the weekend was soft, the dunk contest wasn't that dope and the all star game was meh.

I'm quite enjoying it. The moguls were great action and the finish in the mens biathlon had loads of tension.

Love the fact a lot of medals are being one on the very last run (moguls (both male and female), Ski jump, Mens downhill.....).

I've liked them so far. Can't wait for the snowboarding events. Got all choked up during the medals ceremony for the women's moguls.

The best sproting event all weekend was by far the Daytona 500. Despite the delays, what an awesome finish with the new rules - return of bump-drafting and upto three attempts at a green-white-checker finish (ie. upto three tries to end the race on three full laps, so as long as caution doesn't come out after the white flag is thrown). Dale Jr. going from 22nd to 10th in the first green-white-checker restart. Then going from 10th-2nd in one lap on the last green-white-checker restart. Reminded me of his dad! Hell yeah I love NASCAR! Not the last couple years with the rule chagnes, but this past weekend was awesome and reminded me of the old days. Now just need to get rid of the stupid car-of-tomorrow spoiler. They are going back to the old spoilers in a few weeks...

NASCAR is gettin' exciting again for the first time in years!

I have redneck roots, sorry.

nascar???

the best sporting competition of the weekend was the mavericks big wave surf competition in half moon bay.

50 foot plus waves, stoned announcers, spectators too close to shore getting pummeled and mangled by massive tidal surges. awesome.

i was a gorgeous day in hmb too.

I'm watching womens curing right now and I must say some of the Russian women are kinda cute

Posted by technofriik on Feb-19-2010 19:32:

Boring or not, I'm still glued to my tv. I love the Olympics! Finland's not doing well at all this time around but oh well. At least we got silver in men's snowboarding, half pipe! I'm wearing my Finland sweater at work today to show my support GO FINLAND!!!

Btw, is it just me or were the men's figureskating events gayer than ever?!?

Posted by xjoshx on Feb-19-2010 19:35:

I've never really been into the olympics, but the last few nights have been pretty entertaining to me. Shaun White? comon, his reverse mctwist 1040 or w/e its called was sick and a gold medal winner! plus the womens alpine skiing and stuff was incredibly exciting too. womens half pipe was last night and i think we got silver and gold. and that american dude that wears the black feathers in figure skating has seemed like a pretty good story too. i didn't see if he or the russian dude won last nite though.

def. the first time i've been diggin the winter olympics

Posted by Nerologic on Feb-19-2010 20:33:

Yeah i was really into the snowboarding competition, that is what i was waiting for.

Shaun is amazing, check this out to see more of him. Redbull dropped a nice piece of change into him:

Might be kind of old news, but they built him his own half pipe in the middle of some mountains.
