Just lost 15 Gb OF MP3'z and Windows 98 :(
Okay im going to go on a rampage and kill anyone you gets in my way , my Alcatel home 500 from BT aint workin , its says there is NO DIAL TONE , which is a load of shit coz i tested the socket 10 times, this means that there is a corrupt network device on my pc , which aint fixable as the driver wont install , ive tried upgrading the drivers and still wont work , ive tried to install XP over 98 and its all gone tits up , its saying No OS found on HD , im sure you have seen the error before, so now im gonna have to reinstall everything from fresh , and ill prob be back online in a few days , Ive backed a few mp3's up but only 3 Gb worth.
shit mate
if you have broadband you will haver no problems getting the tunes back but if you have dial up ur basically fucked.
now thats the reason i bitch about XP so much
it tries to change the compression format of ur harddrive and the jump from 98 is to big or summat. hehe. i recommend u stick with 98, it works fine for me
CD-R?
i am with dumonde trancer, hes right, win98 is still the best for professionall users who downlaod install n deinstall a lot, if u know how to handle the system, the system know how to handle with you, goes like this almost...
however if u want to upgrade win98 to winxp its like u want to tune a rover mini up to a dodge viper gts-r the basics are totally different so there is no "REAL" upgrade possible... at least no upgrade that runs kinda stable...
even with broadband its VERY hard to get 12Gigs back, especially i strongly believe u dont know the total list of 12gigs of music right?
my advice, burn each month 2cds to save them, i need this for my mobile mp3 cd player and its worth it for saving yur collection, since cd-r cost like 50 cents or so i dont care anyway...
so it goes like
2002-06 Juni CD1
2002-06 Juni CD2
2002-07 July CD1
etc etc . . .
1) wtf are you running win98 for its shit, it slowly eats ur pc up the more you install things.
2)why not install win2000/XP along side 98 and not over it?!?!
3)if all else fails, put your HDD in somone elses machine and make it the slave drive by setting the jumpers, that way you will be able to see your mp3 files and move them to wherever or burn them to a cd etc... blah blah blah
Damn dude. You broke up with your girlfriends AND you lost all your mp3's. What's next?
win98 for professional use??? what is this world coming too??? Get windows 2000 at least, if you have the right pc for it (512 ram) put winxp.
As for the rest, dude, relax a bit, take some air. You just lost your gf and you could do some move on your pc and really loose everything. Take your hard disk to someone you trust and just move your files to his/her computer, reinstall from fresh and go back again and take back your files. its a hassle, but 12 gigs is a lot of files... I have 15 gigs of mp3 sitting on my hd, right now and I don't feel like burning them... too much work.
my comp is starting to go to shit so i just ordered another. its not gonna be here til the 25th. if my PC shits the bed before then im gonna go nuts.
Dam. I have about 12 GIGs of MP3s and I'd kill someone if they took em' from me lol.

one word backups, the way i do mine is to have a "new stuff" folder, once this gets to 650-700 meg big wack it onto a cd then file all the stuff in new stuff in to my music and vid and programs etc folder, for any important documents i have i alsho have a copy on my isp's webspace. with the cost of blank cd's so cheep and a slow cd writers geting their price reduced all the time people have no excuse to not back up.
the prob with xp is unless u install it right it may want to convert your harddive format from FAT32 to NTFS, as NTFS does have a few benifits as it is more secure... but it only works best when formatting a drive, not converting a FAT32 drive to NTFS
i personally use XP Pro and i think it is alot better than ME and 98, but thats wot i have found for wot i use my pc for, other people may be better off sticking with 98

| Originally posted by flystyler Ok first, why would you need a dial tone on adsl, its always on, u just plug the thing in. no connection needed Second, even if you needed to dial up, it is just a currupt setting, u can correct this by uninstalling the tc/ip stuff, and then when u start up yr comp again they well auto reinstal. And then you reinstal the modem if needed. Third: Why do people change from fat32 to ntfs, i always stay with fat32, so it is easier to go back to 98, etc, and you dont get problems ![]() fourth: unplug the hard drive take it round yr many friends, and go and set it up as a slave, and then burn everything u want from it ![]() If you r going to do things like this always back up first. Or do what i do, i have a 4gig hard drive for Win Xp, and everything else goes on my 60gig, so it is easy to reformat the 4 gig Or you can do it with partitions, it doesnt take a genius to do that ![]() So before u do something stupid talk to someone who knows. Im lucky because i always ask my next door neighbour who job is to fix computers, and also the person who built mine And if all else faisl talk to someone like swamper, he will point u in the reight direction So there we go |
ok, i do get carried away at sometimes but we get so many threads with ppl losing mp3's. Back your mp3's up on cd-r's, (they are cheap and convient) and then you don't have that problem. I mean, so many ppl keep going on and on about losing mp3's and personally i feel sad for them and feel some anger sometimes. I mean, back the mp3's that you need the most on cd-r's because then you will have them if you lose your data on computer.
