Evil1 Virus TI b!tch... thread

So, looks like my love for virus is slowly fading out. I've put myself on a "Virus TI-free diet" - reducing my use of the synth intentionally, to see what can be accomplished.

Having spent a significant amount of time with various VSTi's over the last months or so, here's what I found:

1. I find TI2 sounding rather COLD. I compared it time and time again with virus C and every time C won as "warmer, fuller" sounding.

2. With synths like zeta, sylenth, nexus, gladiator, omnisphere - keeping virus TI has been hard to justify (aside from it being a comfortable shelf for keeping my Maschine near by)

3. Bugs. Fucking bugs. Just can't fucking get rid of them, can you Access? What the fuck. Jinxed myself too - said TI2 was better than TI. Stuck patches... AGAIN - some patches are more stick-prone than others, not sure why. Oh, and "ghost in the machine" came back - left Virus on last night, walked into my studio this morning, to hear it arpegiating F# to itself. I understand that it may get bored but c'mon now... Before you ask - it was completely disconnected from any USB or MIDI connection, there's no "hold" on arp patch, so - it kicked in by itself and just kept playing all night long.

4. Unprocessed patches sounds mostly like shit. I earnestly tried to wean myself from using any built-in FX on a virus. Turning off FX made most patches bland, metallic, hollow, thin, or harsh. Unless you douse those patches in various FX, they are quite boring. With FX back on - good luck trying to fit them into a mix. NL3 destroys virus in that area - most patches sound great without any FX.

Love affair is over, I'm afraid. I think I'll put it away for couple of weeks and if lust doesn't return, off to ebay it goes.

Have you tried using the TI2's analog outs rather than the USB? I'd be interested to know how those compare to the C.

my virus has been used on every project for the last 36mos. i've owned nearly 30 other pieces of analog kit and still have yet to sell my virus.

it sounds good to me

Though I do have a few issues with bugs, but I probably dont have things setup properly yet.

Also are you guys using yours through USB or Midi? I have it setup through USB. I get sync errors...and the exports of tracks with Virus being used have been bouncing all weird. Still learning my way around it, but sounds good so far.

I used to yearn for a Ti / Ti2 but since reading on here about bugs etc I'm happy I could only afford a B.

Sounds warm, chunky and I don't have any issues with it's sound overpowering the mix. Still want a C though.

And no bugs. Midi in /out, audio out, delay comp', lots of twiddling. Job done.

Seems a real pity Access can't sort these issues out with the Ti's.

I never use USB or digital out - always TSR out. Don't get me wrong - it sounds great if you're going for that sort of sound but if you want a bit of warmth, TI is not the answer.

Something about Virus C's DSP/FX that make it sound much warmer. I might just walk the plank and get back to C full time.

It's funny i tried to find it in the manual, it states that if your machine starts to behave unusual hit a certain button. I found the bit on midi, hit panic etc. But that wasn't it. Obviously they were aware of this problem ages ago and just decided to put in a fail safe rescue button..! PFffttt..,

i'm currently happy with the powercore version + fx freeze for using multiple instances.

Yeah, let's have a bitchfest about the Virus TI! Nobody's ever done that. It sucks, it's buggy and it sucks, everybody uses one and so you'll sound like everybody else and it sucks, Tiesto uses the Virus TI and he sucks, software is just as good and the Virus TI sucks....blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...

....and then let's do it all again next week, shall we?

And again, use what you feel comfortable with, If you like virus - stick with it, if you don't sell, sell ,sell.

Cheers

Is March 3rd OK for everybody? That's a Wednesday.

cant do, thats the next hardware vs software, and I gotta be there, I have a bunch of convincing arguments like examples of artists that use exclusively one or the other

Although I don't share your same hatred for the Virus, I do share your same sentiments regard this. When I think of a sound, for some reason, the Virus just isn't the first synth I think of when I want to try and make it. Massive, Sylenth1, and V-Station are still my go-to synths. I just go to them without even thinking. I've just haven't really been able to bond with it ever since I've bought it.

Posted by Kismet7 on Feb-23-2010 16:08:

anyone know how to bandage the sync error?

Posted by mysticalninja on Feb-24-2010 09:09:

reinstall virus os? try newer or older version.

Posted by Magnus on Feb-24-2010 17:58:

I hardly use mine anymore. Not because of sync issues or any problems with the Ti itself but rather the Cubase "CPU Overload" error.
