What the flying ****...

have you wankers done/allowed to happen to my beloved Toronto scene?

Bottle service, bad attempts @ high fashion, more popped collars than Jersey.

What happened to balls to the wall fun and all the characters?

Bring back 1999-2004 dammit.

The 'balls to the wall' phrase hasnt been used since 2004 either.

I'm just old skool.

Lamenting the designer labels and plasticity of the current scene.

It used to be part of it, but like a virus it's pretty much the entire scene now.

There used to be a fun-house/carnivale vibe with a bit of innocence and lots of creativity.

A weekend in this city was an adventure.

Now it's like Vegas Jr. (vapid and empty)

sometimes im glad my prime is behind me. i wouldnt want to be part of this scene, too much for me.

the music and EDM was way better 2 years and beyond than it is now. although is still like going out, it is only big djs, boat cruises + summer jams for me.

Posted by chinamon on Feb-24-2010 06:33:

you sound like an ugly bastard who wouldn't survive the new scene.

I am too, I had my fill and then some.

I've been out west in Alberta for 3 yrs where there was just nothing.

Recently got out in Toronto, and it was more Zoolander walk off than a bunch of people dancing and having fun.

Still fightin the good fight. You still a breaks monster?

I guess the current scene is the result of the Brittany Spears/Spice Girls generation growing up & running amok.

Just doesn't have that same inclusive vibe, but it's a decent reflection of the Paris Hilton society.

Like the difference between partying @ System or going across the street to Plastique.

Yeah, dubstep just feels like slower jungle mixed with prog.

I've enjoyed some of it, but I miss the variety of pop culture insanity you could find in a breaks set.

I was only in town for the weekend, but I'm back in Ontario until the summer.

I play cards full time now, so I'm @ Rama & Niagara most of the time.

Probably going to take off for B.C. soon though, as the live games here are struggling for players.

heh, im glad to hear you're doing what you love.

take a night off and lets go out. there's still some funky breaks from time to time

Posted by crazedcanuck on Feb-24-2010 07:40:

Sounds good, I'll take you up on that sometime.

Posted by Endlesswave on Feb-24-2010 07:47:

Holy crap welcome back. I still remember your house party years ago. lol

and yes the 'scene' has become meh in some respects, other respects it's still fun. Variety is key...can't keep doing the same club over and over week in no matter how much you love the place b/c it gets stale.

Posted by crazedcanuck on Feb-24-2010 07:55:

Thanks dude, I'm glad to hear that party was a good memory for you.

It was pretty important for me on a few levels, and next to Harvest the following yr, my favourite party.

Good to still see a few familiar faces around here, especially quality ones.

Posted by crazedcanuck on Feb-24-2010 08:06:

It's fitting that the Paris Hilton episode of South Park is on right now.

so what you are saying is that you are bankrupt and selling yourself off for cheap?

Yeah that sounds about right... morally at least LOL!

Hey stranger!

Posted by The Highroller on Feb-24-2010 14:54:

I try to avoid taking part in the "back in the day" discourse, but it is true that these days the retard contingent is definitely a lot larger and maybe even comprises a majority of the scene today. There are just way too many noobs that think because they downloaded the newest #1 tech-house track on Beatport, and because they follow DJs around like lost puppies, that they are part of a privileged haute-socit, whose mandate it is to take every opportunity to show everyone how "connected" and "in-the-know" they are. There is a marked culture of vanity that exists in the scene today that did not exist before. Although the bottle service trend is not completely to blame, I definitely see a connection to the general one-upping and dick-sizing that plagues the scene today.

Another contributing factor is the popularization of techno. Although I love the genre myself, techno fans have always had an elitist chip on their shoulders, and I think that this has been adopted by the masses.

Personally, I just avoid these people and spend my time with those who don't participate in this backwards way of thinking, and who like to have a good time, instead of standing around watching to see if everyone notices how cool they are.

Now, everyone practice their minimal lip curls!

If it makes you feel any better, it's not just TO that lost the feeling. All of North America is suffering the same fate.

I'm with you 100% on this one.

Not sure what's worse. Coming back to the shock of the change or watching it happen live.

Ive commented manytimes but then digitwaat chimes in with the same get out of the past bullshit...
