The "First-Timers" Thread
So now that I'm 21, I'm finally coming down for the madness.
That being said, I have NO idea what to expect or what the hell is going on..
I'm doing my best to research and plan/map out my week. I'm starting this thread to post some questions I can't find answers to, and everyone else who is new can do the same!
As far as transportation goes (since I won't have a car), is taking a taxi the most efficient way? I'm staying with a good friend of mine who goes to FIU so my stay is free. Therefore, I don't mind spending a few bucks on a taxi if its faster and safer. Thoughts?
And lastly.. I CAN'T WAIT!

i found this site http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/routes1.asp which has a link to a Transit System Map. Basically all the bus routes laid out on a map, and you can zoom in/out. Im staying at Fairfield Southeast of the MIA, so i'll be taking route 7 to route 120, which will land me right on south beach... on Collins i believe.
Bus is very cheap.. like 2 bucks 
.. But you gotta be patient
if its your first time and you're not staying on south beach or immediate area downtown...you're missing 1/2 the fun.
The atmosphere on SOBE is awesome during conference...tons of people running around, lots of energy...music blasting out of every hotel, car, pool, etc.
You're going to miss some of the best people watching...

Hey newbies -first off - welcome to your first WMC - it will definitely be an experience. As a miami resident and going on my 8th wmc - here are a few pointers I wish I had known for my first WMC.
1. Pace yourself - depending on your length of stay, most rookie mistakes (mine included) was to go balls out from the very start. You have plenty of time, plenty of parties and a long week ahead of you. It's no fun if you burn out mid-stay or worse you survive but then need another 2-3 weeks post WMC to recover.
2. Planning your events ahead of time is a good idea - since there are so many things going on - you'll never be able to catch them all. And with there equally clubs both on SOBE and off, you can quickly waste a lot of time going back and forth (not to mention $$ for cabs). Door policies during WMC area major cluster f**k. If you haven't made it on someones list by now - chances are you won't (but keep trying). The door is usually run by both the promoter/label AND the club. Pre-paying for certain events (especially big ones) are a good idea - as it is very common for clubs to drive up the covers the day of the event to ridiculous prices. Even if you can't make it - it's usually pretty easy to re-sell the ticket using craigslist or simply asking around.
3. If you are staying off the beach - try to meet someone or know someone staying on the beach so you can have a satellite home base to ditch a change of clothes. I have lived both on and off and let me tell you, going back an forth although in theory seems fine - is a major pain in the a##. Plus cabs rates will be insane (if you can get one) and traffic will be painfully slow.
4. For transportation, the bus system is ok - but expect it to be slow and off schedule a lot. There is a line that runs via the venetian causeway (less traffic than 395 or 195) that will dump you at the Omni center downtown - from there you can grab the metro mover (its free) and that will take you to many of the spots the major clubs on the mainland are around.
5. If you are here on business, understand that unless you have pre-planned meetings, things will be harder to set up than you think (even if you do have a pre-planend meeting). People are always running late and you accomplish more during the day than at night before everyone gets completely wrecked.
6. Be prepared to spend some cash. Even with the best played out plans, WMC is not a bargain basement vacation. Miami is an expensive city (compared to most cities) for entertainment all year round - and more so during WMC. It is common knowledge that everyone jacks up the prices of things by a few more dollars. With that said - avoid VIP tables- unless you are trying to roll into a place with 10+ people that are all dudes). Tables have the worst mark up avg. 300-400 a bottle with a 2 bottle min. and the service does not out weigh the investment.
7. Remember in its inception, this was a means to learn about the EDM industry AND party - although its become more about the latter. Take advantage of the access to the global talent you might not otherwise get to see in your home town. The bigger parties are fun, sure, but the smaller ones are epic and more memorable. WHy see someone you can see any other time of the year. Clearly everyone has that one DJ s/he cannot live w/o seeing, but take the time to take note of the up and coming - next wave of talent.
8. Last thing - have fun -but be smart. Miami has a high tolerance for bafoonery - but even here, there are limits. Piss the doorman off - and good luck getting in - trust me - they remember - and if they do let you in, be prepared to pay out the a##. There are no open container laws - so even though you see people strolling around with open containers, be smart about it, as if you make yourself noticed, a cop is likely to cite you.

I agree, great post! Definitely really good advice. This will be my 3rd conference and I feel each year you learn more... and prepare a whole lot more haha.

See, I didn't know this! So does that mean that you can drink in your vehicle, in the bus, walking down the street?? What do you mean by a cop will cite you? What for, if its not illegal? Good info... not that I plan on being outside of a club/event walking around much! |

I am going to use a good old plastic soda / juice bottle to store my drinks if I am walking to a party.
I am going to rely on the bus alot, I am ok with it being not on time as long as I dont have to wait realllyyyy long.
Would any of you new guys (or anybody really) be interested in a meet up for lunch/early dinner on Tuesday to get to know some faces and what not?
I think it'd be a great way to start the week 
PS i know there's a friday meet-up, but it'd be really helpful to meet some people earlier on for me, or anyone else who's new i'm sure.
