gemini cdj 203s worth it?

hi

i'm looking to buy some cdjs as ive been wanting to have a go for ages but im pretty skint. i reckon i can afford about 500 for decks, mixer and headphones so was looking at the gemini cdj 203s. i know they're obviously not as good as pioneers but they're quite alot cheaper than cdj100s and i just want to use them for playing around, not sure i'll be any good at it anyway.

the only real drawback i can see is that they don't have a bpm counter but i figure it'll be better to learn without relying on that anyway as most djs obviously learnt on vinyl without any of these assists and are better people for it. no scratching either but i don't know anyone who scratches. i'll mainly be playing trance and hard house.

has anyone used these at all and found the quality or feel of them really bad? can't seem to find decent reviews of decks anywhere. the other cdjs in the price range look like little walkmen.. just want to make sure these aren't all looks.

Probably not. If you cant afford to save up for pioneers then maybe have a look on ebay . I had a quick look and you can pick up a pair of denon dns1000 for about 400. I think i would probably prefer a pair of stanton cd decks over gemini.

lol man...

im pretty sure the only drawback with gemini gear IS

their shitty ass build quality that doesnt last for jack. bpm counter....... anyways, if you want to long lasting gear i suggest stay away from cheap products, just my 2 cents.

I've worked on Gemini gear before, and although it'll work in a pinch, I mean if that's what they provide fine, but I personally wouldn't spend my money on it. Check out eBay. Like Simon pointed out, there are a ton of Denon 1000's for sale, take a look at those. If not, you can find other stuff like Pioneer for cheap. BTW, don't worry about the bpm counter. You don't need it. I don't know any DJ who uses that thing. It does give a pretty cool light show though.

Whom is this Sherlock feller?

sherlock is general term for a person who would need to wait for a "just kidding" response from a gemini is better than pioneer/denon response.

its all the rage now calling people sherlock. if you don't know now you know.

I got these when starting out last August, a mate of mine who DJ's said they'd be really good and it was bit of a bargain about 450. He'd done the same with my other mate as well....

My other mate now has cdj1000's with a djm800 and I'm after them as well. Wish I was a bit more patient and got something much better than these in all honesty.

Best thing to do with equipment is get the best gear. Cheap products really do get cheap results.

Completely untrue. I've made cheap stuff work as a good or better than the best stuff. Just because it says Pioneer, doesn't mean a thing. I've had Pioneer stuff fail on me. Everything can fail no matter the price tag.

FFS - if you want to talk like a bunch of twelve year olds, do it in the COR.

I have to disagree in part with this. Actually, like the Technics vinyl decks which just 'felt right', the Pioneer CDJs hit the nail on the head with their ease of use and functionality.

On paper the Technics SLDZ1200s looked like they would take the place as the industry standard CD decks, but in practise they were poorly designed and lacked key functionality.

That's not to say that you can't get good results with cheaper products, and it's fair to say that resale value is higher with the higher end stuff.

is it 500gbp for both decks, the mixer, and the headphones? what is that, like 700USD? i'd say if you're a beginner.. it depends on what the pitch resolution is. if it's .05 or .02 (both of which i severely doubt) then i say go for it. sure, it's gemini, but it'll get the job done. especially if that big fancy jog wheel actually has scratch/cue function similar to the pio cdj's. it looks like it from the picture, at least. don't treat your hardware like shit and they'll stay together longer.

don't go for the s1000's. i used to own a pair- they do get the job done, and are built like tanks, but the jog wheel feels like a toy and they're ugly as sin. of course, most importantly you will want to upgrade very quickly once you get accustomed to them, so you're in essence throwing away that 500 bucks or whatever on the pair for no reason. the pitch resolution is the biggest deal breaker for me there as well; .1 :P

I agree, though depends on the situation...for CDJ's. the 800 or 200 are excellent choices, over getting 1000's. Mixers u don't skimp at all. U need good faders/sound quality or you're not taking it seriously, and your sets will sound like shite.
